3 observations after Sixers top Nets in their summer league finale
3 observations after Sixers top Nets in their summer league finale originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia The Sixers wrapped up their 2025 summer league on a winning note Friday night. With an 87-83 victory over the Nets, the Sixers concluded their Las Vegas play at 3-2. The team went 1-2 in the Salt Lake City summer league. Mark Armstrong scored 23 points and Judah Mintz tallied 20. Several of the Sixers' 2025 top summer league players watched from the bench, including VJ Edgecombe, Johni Broome, Adem Bona and Justin Edwards. Here are observations on the Sixers' summer league finale: The Sixers' two Vegas constants The Sixers started a lineup of Mintz, Hunter Salis, Jalen Slawson, Keve Aluma and Izan Almansa. Aluma and Mintz were the only Sixers to play in all five of the team's Vegas games. Mintz drove hard, absorbed contact and converted an and-one layup in the first quarter. Mintz's foul drawing is a legitimately impressive skill. He shot 8.0 free throws per game (29 for 40 total) in Las Vegas action. The 22-year-old guard averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds. Aluma posted 10.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest. Stellar finish to Armstrong's summer The Nets took a double-digit lead with a run late in the first quarter against the Sixers' bench. Coming off of a 22-point outing Wednesday night vs. the Mavs, Armstrong forced a few shots and struggled in his opening stint. For his first hoop, Armstrong delivered a second-quarter highlight slam. The Sixers played effective zone defense in the second period and erased their deficit. Armstrong hit a difficult baseline runner with 13.6 seconds left in the first half to put the Sixers up 43-42. He stayed hot in the third quarter and again had a good overall game. Credit to the 21-year-old rookie for closing his summer in strong fashion after an 0-for-7 performance in the Sixers' Salt Lake City opener. Defense holds up with three-guard unit Slawson had a subpar offensive game (1 for 4 from the field, five turnovers), but the 25-year-old forward's hustle and eagerness to do dirty work stood out. Slawson grabbed 10 rebounds and had four blocks and three steals. He sunk two late free throws to ice the win, too. Brooklyn briefly regained the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Sixers' closing three-guard lineup with Mintz, Armstrong and Sallis defended well. By summer league standards, the Sixers generally left the right players open, helped each other out and showed sound fundamentals. Armstrong broke an 83-all tie by knocking down two foul shots with 36.0 seconds remaining and the Sixers managed to see their final Vegas victory through.

3 observations after Mintz shines in Sixers' 1st win of 2025 summer
3 observations after Mintz shines in Sixers' 1st win of 2025 summer originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia The Sixers notched their first summer win of 2025 on Tuesday night thanks largely to Judah Mintz. Advertisement They earned a 91-90 victory over the Grizzlies to wrap up their Salt Lake City summer league at 1-2. Mintz starred, tallying 26 points on 9-for-15 shooting, three assists and three steals. Tyler Burton's 23 points led Memphis. The Sixers were without VJ Edgecombe (left thumb contusion), Adem Bona (rest) and Alex Reese (Achilles soreness). The team's first game in the Las Vegas summer league is scheduled for Thursday night vs. the Spurs. Here are observations on the Sixers' win Tuesday: Big-time Sallis slam Jalen Slawson provided an early highlight with a pump fake, drive and slam. Hunter Sallis hammered in a huge dunk late in the first quarter, too. He sliced through the lane and jammed in a one-handed flush over 6-foot-10 Ante Brzovic. Sallis maintained his momentum with a nice stretch in the second quarter that included a wing three-pointer. As his college credentials indicate — 18.3 points per game last year at Wake Forest — Sallis is a multi-dimensional scorer. He recorded 11 points vs. the Grizzlies on 4-for-9 shooting, two assists and two rebounds. Advertisement Outside shooting will be an obvious area to monitor after Sallis shot just 27.7 percent from three-point range as a senior. He said at the Sixers' summer league minicamp last week that he's 'really confident in how I'm shooting the ball right now' and doesn't 'think there's too much to worry about.' Mintz shines The Sixers kept the same starting backcourt of Mintz and Jalen Hood-Schifino (seven points, seven assists). Mintz's shiftiness popped again. He had a tricky and-one leaner during an extended Sixers run in the second period. The 6-foot-3 guard's fakes, footwork and body control enable him to do damage in and around the paint. Mintz is truly excellent at drawing free throws, which helped him post 21.2 points per game last G League regular season for the Delaware Blue Coats. The Syracuse product was among the top players at getting to the foul line in Salt Lake City, going 21 for 23 over the Sixers' three games. Advertisement Sixers sweat out a win Justin Edwards sunk a three on his first shot. The second-year wing had his most efficient game in Utah, scoring 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting. However, Edwards was scoreless in the fourth quarter and Memphis made a comeback surge. Johni Broome (eight points, 12 rebounds) fell to 0 for 5 from three-point range with a late miss that thudded off the backboard. Burton hit a three with a little over a minute remaining to give the Grizzlies an 87-86 lead. Mintz then delivered down the stretch, banking in a tough runner and scoring a clutch and-one layup with 8.2 seconds left. He was easily the best player on the court Tuesday night.

Player grades: Summer Sixers end Salt Lake City with win over Grizzlies
The Philadelphia 76ers continued the summer league on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies with their final contest of the Salt Lake City portion of the summer. The Sixers will pack it up and head to Las Vegas on Thursday for that stretch of the July portion of the summer. Once again playing without No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe who remains day-to-day with a left thumb contusion, as well as Adem Bona who was resting, the summer Sixers buckled down defensively and found a rhythm on offense to walk away with a 91-90 win over the Grizzlies. Justin Edwards was able to put together a solid night with 15 points and two steals. Judah Mintz led the way for Philadelphia with 26 points, three assists, and three steals, rookie Johni Broome had eight points, 12 rebounds, five of them on the offensive end, and two blocks, while Hunter Sallis added 11 off the bench. Jalen Slawson had seven points and Jalen Hood-Schifino had seven and seven assists. Here are the player grades following a summer league win: Justin Edwards: B-plus The Sixers have been waiting for Edwards to find his rhythm on the offensive end. He was able to get himself some looks off the dribble and get into the paint which created opportunities for him. He was also efficient with his 3-pointers which was an issue in the first two games. Something that has been a problem thus far in the summer league—which has hampered Edwards a bit—is a lack of spacing and the lack of a sure ball-handler for this Sixers roster. Johni Broome: B-plus The rookie big man just played some winning basketball in this one. He was very good defensively as he was in the right spots all night long. He was constantly in the right spots to deter shots and made the right rotations on the drivers of the Grizzlies. Offensively, he was a bit slow to read the double teams, but when he was able to find a crease, he took advantage of it. He has a soft touch around the basket and is an underrated passer. He's also a relentless rebounder which is a big help for a team like the Sixers that can struggle on the glass at times. Hunter Sallis: B After a quiet summer league debut, Sallis had some big highlights in this one. He drove the lane and had a poster slam, knocked down a tough 3, and then ran the floor for a layup. He flashed some poise on the offensive end, and he has some NBA-level athleticism that should earn him a look at some point in the 2025-26 season. Judah Mintz: A One thing's for sure about Mintz: he can put the ball in the basket. He has an aggressive nature and he did a good job of getting into the paint in this one and being able to get the scoreboard moving and was able to get to the line a lot in this one. He has taken full advantage of the opportunity in front of him with Edgecombe out and one has to wonder if he will get a look from an NBA team—even if it isn't the Sixers. He made some huge plays down the stretch for the Sixers to close this one out. Jalen Hood-Schifino: B A problem for Hood-Schifino thus far in the summer league has been handling pressure from opponents. He did a much better job of that in this one as the Sixers were able to find some type of rhythm on the offensive end. He was good with his passing and took care of the ball. Jalen Slawson: C-plus An aggressive player, Slawson was able to get a look as a starter in this one and he had a rim-rattling slam in the early going. The big man out of Furman made some hustle plays on the defensive end of the floor and helped Philadelphia get out in transition. Izan Almanza There is a lot to like about Almanza. With the Sixers on an Exhibit 10 deal, he has a lot of size and skill which allows him to make plays from the wing with ease. He has a smooth game and did some good things off the bench for Philadelphia in this one.

3 observations after summer Sixers drop to 0-2 without Edgecombe
3 observations after summer Sixers drop to 0-2 without Edgecombe originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia The 2025 summer Sixers remain in search of their first victory. They dropped to 0-2 on Monday night, falling to an 89-78 loss to the Thunder. Advertisement VJ Edgecombe sat out with a thumb contusion and is day to day, per The Athletic's Tony Jones. The Sixers' top scorers were Judah Mintz (21 points on 7-for-12 shooting) and Jalen Hood-Schifino (17 points on 6-for-10 shooting). The team's final game in Utah before heading to the Las Vegas summer league will Tuesday night vs. the Grizzlies. Here are observations on the Sixers' loss to OKC: Hood-Schifino starts hot The Sixers started Mintz, Hood-Schifino, Justin Edwards, Johni Broome and Adem Bona. Hood-Schifino had a much stronger, more self-assured start than in the Sixers' loss Saturday to the Jazz. The 22-year-old guard made his first three shots, including a confident top-of-the-key three-pointer. Though Hood-Schifino's overall shooting numbers were subpar in his 13-game Sixers stint last year — 37.1 percent from the floor, 30.4 percent from three-point range — he did have a couple of nights that hinted at potential to handle the ball and knock down pull-up jumpers in the NBA. Advertisement In terms of passing, Hood-Schifino's decision-making was uneven. He threw a couple of cross-court passes into trouble and wound up with two assists and six turnovers. Hood-Schifino's backcourt mate had a nice night, too. Mintz again hustled defensively, drew fouls savvily and got to his spots in the mid-range. Broome's final stat line wasn't sparkling — six points on 2-for-7 shooting, four rebounds, two steals — but his outside shooting was a positive for the Sixers. The lefty big man canned an early corner three and is 4 for 9 beyond the arc so far this summer. Edwards not on his A-game yet While he's already established himself as a rotation-quality NBA player, Edwards has not yet shined at summer league. Advertisement As was the case Saturday, Edwards had a cold, somewhat shaky start offensively. He posted 11 points on 3-for-11 shooting, six rebounds, five assists and five turnovers. Of course, there's no need for concern with Edwards. It's been two games and he may very well be the kind of player who's much better with greater talent and structure around him. Fouls aplenty There were tons of fouls and missed jump shots on both sides. Smooth offense was sparse and overzealous defense was everywhere you looked. OKC shot 32 for 38 at the foul line in the 40-minute game. The Sixers went 23 for 34. Bona's been whistled for 14 fouls over the Sixers' first two summer games. Jalen Slawson picked up six fouls Monday in 18 minutes off the bench. Advertisement After missing the Sixers' summer league opener with an ankle sprain, rookie Hunter Sallis played on the second unit and had three points and three rebounds in 16 minutes. All of his points came on free throws.
