Royal Ascot jockey banned and given significant fine after winning biggest race of his life
Royal Ascot jockey banned and given significant fine after winning biggest race of his life Gary Carroll was recently hit with a ban and fine by the British Horseracing Authority's Whip Review Committee after his win on Cercene in the Coronation Stakes Gary Carroll has been handed a 14-day ban (Image: Alan Crowhurst, Getty Images for Ascot Racecourse ) Leading jockey Gary Carroll, who recently rode Cercene to a shock 33-1 victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, is set to miss a key upcoming race. Carroll secured his first-ever Group 1 win as Cercene triumphed in the top-level 1m contest for three year old fillies, upsetting the heavily favoured Zarigana. This remarkable win also marked a milestone for Co Tipperary-based trainer Joseph G Murphy, as it was his first Group 1 win in 50 years of holding a licence, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. Following the win, Carroll said: "This is unbelievable. I have been riding a long time now and been placed in plenty of Group One races. "This is my first one and, if I was ever to ride a Group One winner, I wanted it to be for Joe Murphy. I have been riding for him since I was a 7lb claimer and he has been very good to me. I am delighted I can repay him. "Cercene ran a blinder at the Curragh, where the slow pace didn't suit. We went a bit better gallop there today. She got to the front a furlong and a half out and she waited. Then the French horse came and headed me. "To be fair to this one, she is not big, but she is very tough and stuck her head out for me. This is hugely satisfying. Group One races are so hard to come by, and good horses are very hard to come by. To do this at Royal Ascot is magic." The Breeders' Cup is also potentially on her agenda towards the year's end. Yet, unless he wins an appeal, Carroll will miss the Irish Oaks on July 19 due to a whip ban incurred. He was summoned before the BHA's Whip Review Committee following his ride in the Coronation Stakes, where the panel handed down both a suspension and a fine to Carroll. "Taking into account that this was a Class 1 race, the penalty in respect of the above permitted level was doubled. Therefore, he will be suspended for 14 days from Tuesday 08 – Monday 21 July 2025, inclusive and fined £5,800."

Royal Ascot winner set to miss Classic date after getting whip ban and fine
Jockey Gary Carroll will not be able to ride surprise Coronation Stakes winner Cercene if connections go ahead with plans to supplement her for the Irish Oaks A Royal Ascot-winning jockey is set to miss a huge next date with surprise Coronation Stakes winner Cercene. Gary Carroll registered his first success at Group 1 level when Cercene pulled off a 33-1 shock in the royal meeting's top level 1m race for three-year-old fillies by defeating hot favourite Zarigana. The victory also fulfilled a lifetime goal for the Co Tipperary trainer Joseph G Murphy who had never saddled a Group 1 winner during 50 years with a licence. Carroll said on the day: 'This is unbelievable. I have been riding a long time now and been placed in plenty of Group One races. This is my first one and, if I was ever to ride a Group One winner, I wanted it to be for Joe Murphy. 'I have been riding for him since I was a 7lb claimer and he has been very good to me. I am delighted I can repay him. 'Cercene ran a blinder at the Curragh, where the slow pace didn't suit. We went a bit better gallop there today. 'This is hugely satisfying. Group One races are so hard to come by, and good horses are very hard to come by. To do this at Royal Ascot is magic.' Since Cercene's victory Murphy has outlined an ambitious programme for the filly, including supplementing her for the £426,000 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh. The Breeders' Cup could also feature on her programme at the end of the year. However, unless he mounts a successful appeal, Carroll would have to sit out the Irish Oaks on July 19 after picking up a whip ban. He was referred to the BHA's Whip Review Committee after the Coronation Stakes and that panel issued Carroll with a ban and fine. The Committee's report said: 'Gary Carroll, the rider of the winner Cercene (IRE), was found to have used his whip twice above the permitted level of six from approximately two furlongs out. 'Taking into account that this was a Class 1 race, the penalty in respect of the above permitted level was doubled. Murphy may roll dice with Cercene in Irish Oaks
Cercene could be supplemented for next month's Juddmonte Irish Oaks following her surprise Coronation Stakes success at Royal Ascot. Third behind Lake Victoria in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the daughter of Australia took her game to another level on the penultimate day of the Royal meeting, finishing powerfully under Gary Carroll to get the better of French Guineas heroine Zarigana as a 33-1 shot. While the result was a shock to many, trainer Joe Murphy expected a bold showing. He said: 'If you go back and look at the Irish Guineas, she was the only filly that passed three horses over the last furlong. If they went another furlong, I'm not saying we'd beat the Ballydoyle filly (Lake Victoria), but we could have been second and there's no harm being second best to her.' 'I'm delighted with the way she came home, she licked the pot and we're thrilled with her.' With Cercene yet to race beyond a mile, Murphy admits to having doubts about whether her stamina will stand up to the mile and a half of the Irish Oaks, but feels it could be worth rolling the dice. 'We have our Group One in the bag now and she's finished third in a Group One and second in the Athasi Stakes from seven runs, so we're in a very happy place,' he added. 'We're thinking of supplementing her for the Irish Oaks. We'll probably make an entry for the Nassau in Goodwood as well, but we have to figure out the timing. 'The Pretty Polly this weekend comes too soon after Ascot. You could go over a mile and a quarter in the Nassau, but you're taking on older fillies, whereas in the Oaks you're only taking on your own age group. 'She has her Group One, so if she doesn't stay, I'll take the blame and we'll go back (in trip) and start the engine again.' The Fethard-based trainer also has big plans for the second half of the season, with a trip to California in early November very much on the agenda. Murphy said: 'We have havethe Matron Stakes (at Leopardstown) and then probably the Breeders' Cup, so that's the programme going along. We're looking forward to the Breeders' Cup as we think she'll handle it — she's very well balanced and tough and honest. 'The dream is more alive than it was before Ascot.'
