Forest department invites public ire for KSRTC bus seizure

KOCHI: The people are unhappy with the forest department. Its decision to impound a KSRTC luxury bus for 24 days for causing the death of a deer in Wayanad and the revision of guidelines for sanctioning compensation to dependents of wild animal attack victims have not gone down well with the public. On April 19, the forest department impounded a KSRTC Scania bus plying between Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru after it hit a deer at Muthanga in Wayanad. A case was registered under Section 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act and the bus was kept in custody for 24 days, leading to huge loss to the KSRTC. The bus was released on May 13 after the KSRTC executed a bond worth Rs 13 lakh before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Sultan Bathery. 'It (the April 19 incident) was an accident. The deer suddenly crossed the road (and got hit by the bus). However, the forest department registered a case for hunting, entirely ignoring the fact that it was an accident. If this is its approach towards a public sector firm you can imagine what will happen if the accused is a person,' said Paul Mathews, a farmer in Sultan Bathery. A forest official said that the case was registered as per the law and that the department cannot bypass rules. Forest Minister A K Saseendran, too, said the department did not do anything to deliberately cause difficulty to the KSRTC.

Here to correct and be corrected, says Vedan

IDUKKI: 'Youth should not get influenced by me in certain matters. I am here to correct myself and be corrected,' Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, told the large crowd that had assembled for his musical event at Vazhathope in Idukki on Monday. The 30-year-old rapper was performing at the 'Ente Keralam' exhibition-cum-trade fest held in connection with the fourth anniversary of the LDF government. Though Vedan's programme was earlier planned to be held at the 'Ente Keralam' venue on April 29, it was cancelled by the Idukki district administration in the backdrop of his arrest in a ganja case. After being released on bail, the popular rapper was arrested again the same day by the Kodanad forest range officials for allegedly wearing a chain embedded with a leopard tooth. Vedan was slapped with non-bailable charges under multiple sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. However, the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Perumbavoor granted him conditional bail on April 30, citing a lack of prima facie evidence. With Vedan receiving widespread support, especially on social media, the government too came out in support of the rapper, offering him a chance again to perform at the valedictory function of the 'Ente Keralam' event. The large crowd that thronged the Vocational HSS ground on the night comprised people of all ages. Arun Das, from Ponkunnam in Kottayam district, said Vedan represents the common man and his songs speak of the issues faced by the common people. 'Nobody can suppress Vedan's voice and he will continue singing for the people who love him,' he said.

Rapper Vedan set to perform at Kerala government event today

IDUKKI: In a notable shift in stance, the Kerala government has decided to reinstate rapper Vedan's programme at the 'Ente Keralam' event in Vazhathope, Idukki, days after cancelling it following his arrest in a drug case. The move comes amid growing criticism over the aggressive action taken by some forest officials, which both the CPM leadership and Forest Minister A K Saseendran later termed 'overzealous'. Hirandas Murali, popular as Vedan, was originally scheduled to perform at the 'Ente Keralam' venue on April 29 as part of celebrations marking the fourth anniversary of the state government. However, his arrest on April 28 for alleged possession of ganja led the Idukki district administration to call off the show. He was arrested again the same day under the Wildlife Protection Act for allegedly wearing a chain with what was suspected to be a leopard's tooth. The tide turned after the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Perumbavoor granted him bail on April 30, citing lack of evidence to support the charges under the Wildlife Protection Act violation. The court noted that the pendant could not be confirmed as leopard tooth and there was no link to hunting or illegal trade. Following the court's observation, the government rescheduled Vedan's performance for Monday, at 8pm , at the Vazhathope Government Vocational Higher Secondary School ground.
