The Voice's Season 27 Winner Is…
The confetti cannons were loaded and ready to fire Tuesday evening as The Voice prepared to reveal the identity of its Season 27 winner. Based on Monday's performances by the Top 5 (recapped here), it seemed like it should be a toss-up between Team Michael Bublé's underrated Adam David and Team Adam Levine's sublime Lucia Flores-Wiseman. But how often have the results ever gone the way we expected? (Need I remind you that Katie Kadan didn't win Season 17? And yes, I'm still bitter.)
Though Monday wasn't a high point for Team John Legend's Renzo, he's got star power to burn. Team Bublé's Jadyn Cree isn't just the obvious producers' pick, she appeared to have the teenybopper vote locked up. (Look at the results of TVLine's 'Say whaaat?' polls!) And though Team Kelsea Ballerini's Super Save artist Jaelen Johnston fumbled big time in his first performance, he rebounded with his second. And don't we all love a good comeback story?

Before we found out the identity of the winner, we were, of course, first treated to a full-to-brimming evening of entertainment. Kicking off the night was Foreigner with a medley of the band's hits 'Feels Like the First Time,' 'Jukebox Hero' and 'I Want to Know What Love Is.' (Credit where it's due, they sounded as radio-ready as ever, including Kelly Hansen's lead-vocals successor.) Former coach Kelly Clarkson delivered a heartfelt rendition of her ballad, 'Where Have You Been?' (And that high note — Lord!)
Season 22 victor Bryce Leatherwood, looking all kindsa comfortable, tore through 'God Made' with enviable confidence. (Take note, Jaelen!) Former and hopefully future coach Chance the Rapper took us on a chill trip through 'Space and Time.' Joe Jonas delivered a solid take on his hit 'Heart by Heart' (aka my fave current song). Mega Mentor Sheryl Crow teamed up with James Bay to make 'You and Me Time' time worth spending. The Top 5 (as well as a bunch of eliminated contestants) banded together on a hella-messy version of Bastille's 'Pompeii' that found them being completely upstaged by their acrobatic backing dancers.
As the episode neared its final quarter, former coach Alicia Keys teamed up with Hell's Kitchen lead Amanda Reid to elevate the proceedings with positively pristine renderings of 'The River' and 'Empire State of Mind.' Last but not least, the sing-off's GOAT Blake Shelton took us to 'Texas' — but not before revisiting the magic that was his spar-tnership with Adam. (The two of them even hinted, however slightly, that they might one day reunite on the coaching panel.)
As for the coach/contestant duets, they went something like this…
Renzo and John Legend, 'As It Was' | Hard to improve on Harry Styles' original version of his mega-hit — and, erm, this didn't. It was awkward, strained, mediocre karaoke. They didn't even bother to change 'Harry, you're no good alone' to 'Renzo, you're no good alone.'
Jaelen Johnston and Kelsea Ballerini, 'Whiskey Lullaby' | On Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss' duet, Jaelen altogether laid to rest the specter of Monday's oopsie. He sounded terrific and meshed beautifully with his coach. If you didn't know any better, you wouldn't have even been able to guess which of them was the pro and which was the wannabe.
Adam David and Michael Bublé, 'The Weight' | 'Adlé' fully brought their bromance to bear on The Band's golden oldie. The duo's performance was casual and comfortable, and their delight in sharing the stage was contagious. Whether Adam made it to the winner's circle, he'd certainly made a friend.
Lucia Flores-Wiseman and Adam Levine, 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' | Contestant and coach worked well together on their Beatles cover. Interestingly, though, it was (perhaps predictably?) Lucia's unique tone that really caught the ear. The Maroon 5 frontman was good; his protégé, memorable.
Jadyn Cree and Michael Bublé, 'I Got You, Babe' | All I could think while watching this Sonny and Cher cover was, 'Holy crap, I've had fondue that isn't this cheesy.' And is it just me, or does Jadyn always sound like she is flattening the roundness out of any and every possible note?
