22News reporter visits Wilbraham Middle School Morning Show

WILBRAHAM, Mass (WWLP) – The Wilbraham Middle School Morning Show is a new addition to the school in the past year, introducing the younger generations to broadcast news. 'The kids come in, we have scriptwriters and we do interviews with the superintendent,' said Kristen VanDerBeken, a teacher at Wilbraham Middle School who helped to found The Morning Show. 'We've done interviews with police officers about bullying.' Over 2,000 positions available for 2025 season at Six Flags New England VanDerBeken said the students come up with great ideas and work together as a team. 'Being with some new friends, some old friends and seeing people that I don't see every day,' 7th grader Timothy Euber said when asked about his favorite part. Tuesday morning, they had a special guest on the show, 22News reporter and Wilbraham Middle School alum, Julia O'Keefe. 'They had nothing like this here when I was in middle school,' said O'Keefe. 'So to get kids interested in journalism and really see how it works with a young age. I think it's really incredible.' The 7th and 8th graders work each morning to put together a newscast and they had a few questions for 22News reporter Julia O'Keefe 'What was the most interesting report that you have done on the news?' asked Blasenak on the Morning Show. O'Keefe said it was hard to pick just one, but 'We got to go to the Big E, talk about all of the cool foods that they had, the governor was there. That is where I interviewed the governor,' said O'Keefe. 'It is hard to pick just one because every day is so different.' 'Do you get background stories before you do the interviews? That's like what I want to know,' asked 7th grader Lexi Blasenak. 'We usually get a press release or some information or a website to look at before we go out and shoot those stories,' answered O'Keefe. 'So I think people don't see what happens before obviously that story gets on the air, but there's a lot of research that goes into it.' O'Keefe not only got a chance to go back to school but also helped to educate possibly the next generation of news reporters.
