Former Dodgers pitcher Urias suspended over domestic violence case
Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias will be suspended from baseball until July after violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, the league said on Friday. The 28-year-old Mexican left-hander has not played professionally since being placed on administrative leave in September 2023 following his second arrest on domestic violence allegations. Urias, whose eight seasons at the Dodgers included throwing the final out in the team's 2020 World Series victory, was released by the team at the end of the 2023 season. He has been a free agent since being cut from the Dodgers, but has not been picked up by any team. The league said Friday Urias's suspension would run through July 17, 2025. After that date he will be free to sign for a club. "The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball has completed its investigation into allegations that free agent pitcher Julio Urías violated Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement on Friday. "Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Urías violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate." rcw/dj

MLB Suspends Julio Urias, First To Violate Violence Policy Twice
The baseball career of former Dodgers star Julio Urias will be curtailed if not terminated by his suspension for alleged domestic violence. The left-handed pitcher, who won 20 games in 2021 and posted a league-best 2.16 earned run average a year later, has been suspended through the 2025 All-Star break by Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred after an intensive investigation. The game will be played in Atlanta's Truist Park on July 15. He will be reinstated on July 17 but will then need to find a team willing to take a chance and work his way back into playing condition – a process that could take at least a month. Finding a new home could be impossible for Urias, the first man suspended twice under Major League Baseball's domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy. But he won't turn 29 until August and left-handed pitchers often seem to have an advantage over their right-handed counterparts – simply because southpaws are fewer in number. Primarily a starter during his eight years in the majors, Urias is remembered for his white-rimmed glasses and single-digit uniform (No. 7 with Los Angeles). He is 60-25 during the regular season and 8-3 in post-season play. The 6-foot, 220-pound Mexican broke into the big leagues in 2016 and has been used mainly as a starting pitcher since. 'Having reviewed all of the available evidence,' Manfred said in a statement issued by the Office of the Commissioner, 'I have concluded that Mr. Urias violated our policy and that discipline is appropriate.' The pitcher was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence in September 2023 after an altercation outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles after a major-league soccer game. Civilian video obtained by the police appeared to show Urias in a physical altercation with a woman. Booked and released on a $50,000 bond, he was placed on administrative leave by the Dodgers and then became a free agent after that season. In December, the Los Angeles Police Department referred their findings to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office to determine whether charges should be filed. Although no felony charges were filed, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office later charged Urias with five misdemeanors: spousal battery, two counts of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one county of false imprisonment, and one count of assault. The pitcher pleaded no contest to one domestic battery charge but the others were dropped as a condition of his plea. The L.A. City Attorney's office said Urias would serve 36 months on probation, perform 30 days of community service, complete a year-long domestic violence counseling program, pay a fee to a domestic violence fund, pay the victim restitution and abide by an order of protection. He was aksi barred from possessing any weapons. His latest troubles followed a 2019 arrest for allegedly shoving a female companion to the ground. The Los Angeles City Attorney did not prosecute on the condition that Urías complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program, among other criteria. He did receive a 20-game suspension, however, under MLB's authority to punish players allegedly implicated in domestic or sexual violence even if law enforcement declines or defers charges. That authority was authorized under a joint agreement with the MLB Players Association. If Urias does not resume his pitching career, his potential financial losses will be staggering. The Dodgers paid him $14,250,000 under the one-year contract he signed in 2023. It could be his last.

Free agent LHP Julio Urias suspended by MLB
March 21 - Former Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias has been suspended through the 2025 All-Star break for his second violation of MLB's policy against domestic violence, league commissioner Rob Manfred announced Friday. Urias, 28, hasn't pitched in the majors in more than 18 months. The suspension stems from an incident outside of BMO Stadium in Los Angeles following an MLS game Sept. 3, 2023, in which Urias and his wife were involved a physical altercation. In May of 2024, Urias pleaded no contest to misdemeanor domestic battery charges related to that incident, per Los Angeles Superior Court records. He was placed on probation for 36 months and was required to complete 30 hours of community service, participate in a domestic violence counseling program and honor the victim's protective order. "The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball has completed its investigation into allegations that free agent pitcher Julio Urias violated Major League Baseball's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy," Manfred said in a statement. 'Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Urias violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate." Urias is the first player to be suspended twice under MLB's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy which was created in 2015. After a separate incident in 2019, he was suspended 20 games under the policy. He was not criminally charged in that incident. Urias was placed on administrative leave by the Dodgers following the September 2023 incident and became a free agent when his contract expired at the end of that season. Urias' latest suspension will be officially lifted on July 17, at which point he would be eligible to sign with any MLB team. A native of Mexico, Urias is able to sign with any team in the Mexican League given his free agent status. Urias was 11-8 with a 4.60 ERA in 21 starts in 2023 before his season came to an end. His ERA was more than double his National League-leading 2.16 mark in 2022. In eight major league seasons, Urias is 60-25 with a 3.11 ERA in 158 appearances (122 starts). He recorded the last out of the 2020 World Series.

Pitcher Julio Urías suspended through the All-Star break by MLB under domestic violence policy
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias was suspended through the All-Star break by Major League Baseball on Friday under its domestic violence policy with the players' association. Urías had pleaded no contest last May to one count of misdemeanor domestic battery. The penalty was the second for Urías under the policy following a 20-game suspension in 2019. MLB said he will be reinstated from the restricted list on July 17. A 28-year-old left-hander, Urías has not pitched since Sept. 1, 2023. He was arrested two days later outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, where he had attended a Major League Soccer game on Sept. 3 involving Inter Miami and Lionel Messi. The Department of Public Safety said it was contacted by someone, whose name was not publicly identified, regarding a physical altercation between a man and a woman. Urías initially was given a felony charge of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, and he was placed on administrative leave by MLB that Sept. 6. Urías pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor domestic battery the following May 1 as four other misdemeanor charges were dropped. Los Angeles City Attorney's office spokesman Ivor Pine said Urías was placed on 36 months of summary probation and ordered to complete 30 days of community labor. Urías must also complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling course, pay a domestic violence fund fee, not possess any weapons, not use any force or violence, pay restitution to the victim and abide by a protective order. 'Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Urías violated our policy and that discipline is appropriate,' baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement Friday. MLB said Urías agreed to be evaluated by the joint policy board established by MLB and the players' association and to comply with any of its recommendations. Urías' agent, Scott Boras, said the pitcher was not making any statement. Urías became a free agent after the 2023 World Series when his $4.7 million, one-year contract expired. Urías was also arrested in May 2019 on suspicion of domestic battery. While he was suspended by MLB, he wasn't prosecuted by the LA city attorney on the condition he complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program. Over eight major league seasons, all with the Dodgers, Urías is 60-25 with a 3.11 ERA. He led the National League with a 2.16 ERA in 2022 and was a member of the team that won the 2020 World Series, going 4-0 with a save and a 1.17 ERA in six postseason appearances. ___ AP MLB: recommended in this topic
