German political group proposes buying Mallorca

Published: | Updated: The youth wing of a German political party has put forward a cheeky and audacious proposal to buy the entire Spanish island of Mallorca. The Ulm-Biberach branch of Junge Liberale (Young Liberals) raised eyebrows after it proposed to bringing the party island into German control. 'In doing so, we are assuming responsibility for an island that has long been a cultural part of our lives, providing legal certainty for the many Germans living there, and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.' The account denied that the post was satirical in a comment underneath. The post, which had the hashtag '#trump', was immediately compared to the US president's bid to buy Greenland.

Now the Germans want to BUY Mallorca! Political group puts forward cheeky proposal - and it's immediately compared to Trump's bid to buy Greenland

The youth wing of a German political party has put forward a cheeky and audacious proposal to buy the entire Spanish island of Mallorca. The Ulm-Biberach branch of Junge Liberale (Young Liberals) raised eyebrows after it proposed to bringing the party island into German control. It said in an Instagram post: 'Millions of Germans travel there every year – why shouldn't the enormous tourism revenues directly benefit our national budget? 'With Mallorca, we are not only securing a profitable premium travel destination, but also a strategic location in the Mediterranean. Several commenters posted doctored images of Trump saying: 'I want to buy Greenland'. The plot, which Trump first suggested in his first term as president, saw threaten to annex the autonomous Danish territory. When asked whether he would use military force, he said: 'I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule anything out. 'We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we'll take care of, and we'll cherish them, and all of that. 'But we need that for international security.' One joked under the Young Liberals' post: 'First good demand of the [Young Liberals].' Another wrote: 'Would prefer Austria.' This isn't the first time German political parties have suggested buying Mallorca. Around 30 years ago, Christian Social Union representative Dionys Jobst made a similar proposal.
