Kitchener author's new book tells nostalgic story of summers spent in cottage country

Kitchener author Kate Jenks Landry has a new children's book out. A Summer Without Anna tells the story of a young Junie who spends the summer with her grandparents because her older sister is sick. While Junie misses her family, she also has little adventures — including looking for an elusive giant turtle. Kate Jenks Landry told CBC K-W's Aastha Shetty more about the new book, which was inspired by the author's own life.

Woman Orders Pool for Dog To Enjoy This Summer—but There's Just One Problem

When dog owner Shona Callinan ordered a summer-time treat for her dog, she was hoping it would be the perfect solution to the hot weather—but when the dog pool arrived, it was clear there was a problem. The 24-year-old from Ireland ordered her dog Junior, known as Junie, a pool to cool off in the hot weather, but when it arrived, it was much smaller than expected. In a video on TikTok with over 170,000 views, 13-year-old rough collie Junie is standing politely in the pool, barely large enough to fit his paws. The text overlay said: "POV: You ruined your dog's summer by ordering the wrong size swimming pool." "I ordered the pool two weeks ago," Callinan told Newsweek. "I was on vacation when it was delivered and I got a text to say it was delivered by the postman. I asked my dad was it delivered all week and he said no—there was no swimming pool." It was meant to be big enough to fit a Labrador but I didn't read the size measurements and bought the tiny pool by looking at the picture," she said. Despite the sizing snafu, Junie remained calm and composed in his "hamster-sized" spa day moment. "Junior hasn't a clue what's going on and he's such a quiet little character who just stands patiently every time I put a camera in his face," Callinan said. "He's getting older now so to see him go viral in his older age is great fun." The moment was originally shared at the suggestion of Callinan's friend and coworker Emily before it gained viral attention. "She thought it was funny, and then it just blew up," Callinan said. "We were surprised to see the video doing so well but it's not unusual that I would buy useless things like that." People fell in love with the video online, and headed to the comments to share their reaction. "Omg it's a hamster pool," said @franlouiseweber. While viewer @beth joked: "That wouldn't even fit his dinner." "He's ready for a great pedicure. Now please order him a sauna. Thanks," joked ellie_papaggelou. Small Pool Safety for Dogs Paddling pools are a great way to keep dogs cool during the summer months, water can help dogs to regulate their body temperature, while a pool can also provide physical and mental stimulation—particularly in months where it may not be safe to walk your dog during the day. Despite the positives of small pools for dogs, there are warnings too as stories of animals dying after consuming too much water too quickly from a small pool. In 2022, 18-month-old border collie Winter died from water intoxication after playing in around four inches of water, while in 2023, 4-month-old St. Bernard puppy Moose died of pneumonia after he drank his water too fast and had to be rushed to urgent care. Winter's owner Jessie recalled: "He was panting and wanted to go back inside so in we went. After a few steps into the house, Winter threw up a massive amount of water and I immediately knew something was wrong. He walked a few more steps and collapsed and starting shaking, drooling, and whining." Sadly just 20 minutes later, Winter was dead, prompting the owner to share her story and raise awareness for other pet owners. Sweet Golden Retriever Is 'So Shy' She Gets Put With the Puppies at Day Care

A viral video of a shy dog who had to be placed in a group of smaller puppies has left people in stitches. With more than 400,000 views, Junie the dog has melted hearts. In the short clip posted by @kellyandjunieb on TikTok, golden retriever puppy Junie was lying quietly on the floor surrounded by smaller puppies. The caption read: "When she's too shy to be with the big dogs so she gets stuck with the tinys," while the on-screen text explained: "Junie gets put with the tiny dogs at puppy play because she's so shy." Junie's gentle nature and timid demeanor instantly struck a chord with viewers, many of whom shared their own stories of shy or nervous pets in the comment section. One user, @sarahanne666, said: "My shy Border collie faked a limp during play group. It happened three different times and the trainer said he had never seen anything like that." Another viewer, @InsanitiesLittleDuckling, shared a memory of her adult Rottweiler who once peed in fear upon seeing a Great Dane for the first time. "Poor dog was just standing there being a good boy," she said. Viewer @unnDunn shared a similar story: "Our German shepherd puppy got put with 'the littles' when she started doggy daycare." While Junie's bashful behavior might seem unusual to some, it's far from uncommon in the world of puppy play sessions. Puppy socialization classes are designed to help young dogs, typically under five months old, to build confidence, learn basic manners, and become comfortable around other dogs in a safe, structured environment. Michelle Bernstein, veterinary professional and animal behaviorist at Switch4Good, told Newsweek: "There are many factors that can determine why a dog can be more shy than other dogs and can include not being properly socialized, traumatic history, or even illness. "There is also the factor of genetics, and similar to humans, they could have more of an introverted personality," Bernstein said. For pet parents worried about their shy dog, Bernstein also had some advice, saying: "Depending on why your dog is acting shy around other dogs, there are good ways to encourage your dog. We never want to make our dogs do anything they don't want to, it's all about positive reinforcement and not forced behavior," she said. "First, you want to learn how to recognize the signs. How is their body language? Are their ears pinned back, tail between their legs? Are they constantly licking their paws or lips? All of these are signs of fear or anxiety," Bernstein added. "To help your dog, make sure to always go slow and use gentle introductions with anything new to them. Allow your dog to go at their own pace. When they are comfortable, staying at a slow pace, try to introduce them to different people, animals, and things, and have those people and animals also interact at a slow pace as well." While many dogs will settle in their own time with the right support, Bernstein said that it is always a good idea to consult a veterinarian and professional behaviorist if you are concerned about your pet. In 2022, another nervous dog gained viral attention after overcoming his fears to make new friends. Pablo the Staffordshire bull terrier delighted the internet when he went from walking alone wearing a yellow reflective jacket with the word "nervous" to playing with four dog friends at a local park. Newsweek reached out to @kellyandjunieb via TikTok for comment.

Some are naturally outgoing and playful, while others, like Junie, may be more sensitive or reserved. Viewer cherylstevens386 on TikTok echoed this, and said: "She'll come out of her shell once she knows she's safe."
