Juno Award winning musician David Myles sworn in as MP for Fredericton–Oromocto
After two decades on Canadian stages, acclaimed singer-songwriter David Myles is now settling into a very different kind of spotlight — as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Fredericton–Oromocto. Myles, a Juno-winning artist says the transition from music to politics was fueled by a deep sense of purpose and concern for the country's future. 'I started to feel for the country in a way that I hadn't in my life,' Myles said in an interview with CTV Atlantic's Katie Kelly. 'It wasn't that I studied political science. It was that I felt like I actually knew the country, and I loved the country, and I had faith in the people of this country, and that was honestly the motivating force.' 'The intensity of the job, the schedule of the job, obviously the public part of the job, too,' he said. He officially took office following a win supported by more than 250 campaign volunteers. This is real. I'm going to be an MP,' he said. 'This is a full-time, very serious job, and I want to do it well.' Myles says he's fully committed to representing all constituents — even those who may not share his views. 'People love musicians. Politicians? Not so much,' he said. 'But I ran to represent everybody. That's how I approached my music too. I never wanted to just play to like-minded people — I wanted connection across the board.' His first few weeks on the hill have been memorable. Just days after being sworn in, Myles found himself sitting in the House of Commons for the first time and watching King Charles deliver an address to Parliament. 'It was wild. One minute I'm at the market in Fredericton, the next I'm watching the King speak in Ottawa,' he said. While his calendar is now dominated by politics, Myles isn't ruling out returning to music for charitable causes like Singing for Supper, a holiday tradition he holds dear. 'I won't be doing gigs, not while this job demands so much,' he said. 'But I'll still play at night — to soothe my soul.' As for his long-term goal in office, Myles says it's all about staying grounded. 'I want to build bridges — between urban and rural, between people with different perspectives,' he said. 'And I want to stay connected to the community that sent me here.'

‘22 Minutes,' Nelly Furtado among early Canadian Screen Award winners

A ceremony for news, entertainment and sports categories named the 'I'm Like a Bird' singer best host of a live entertainment special for steering the 2024 Juno Awards, which also won best live entertainment special. The biggest haul went to CBC's long-running satirical news show, which claimed four wins in sketch comedy categories – for best program, writing, direction and performance. The title for best national newscast went to CTV News' 'National News with Omar Sachedina,' best news or information series went to CBC's 'The Fifth Estate,' and best talk or entertainment news series went to CTV's 'The Good Stuff with Mary Berg.' Best news anchor went to Adrienne Arsenault for her work on CBC's 'The National,' best national reporter went to Jeff Semple of 'Global National,' and best local reporter went to CBC Indigenous's Jackie McKay. Another bash set for Friday evening was set to honour documentary, factual, lifestyle and reality categories. Two galas on Saturday will cover the bulk of awards in the film and television categories. Marquee categories for top winners in Canadian film, television and digital media will be announced Sunday and broadcast by CBC. On Friday, TSN's coverage of the 2024 Copa America earned three wins — for best sports program, opening and host, for James Duthie. CBC's coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics nabbed one win, for best sports play-by-play for Mark Lee. Best local news cast and local news anchor went to 'Global BC News Hour' and its deskers Chris Gailus and Sophie Lui.

‘It's been such a journey': Halifax duo Neon Dreams celebrates 10 years of music
A decade after first making waves in the Canadian music scene, Neon Dreams is back home in Halifax to celebrate. 'It feels like we've matured into the role we take on with our music,' Kadillac told CTV Atlantic's Katie Kelly. 'Looking back, I'm just really happy with where we are now.' The duo – made up of vocalist Frank Kadillac and drummer Adrian Morris – is marking the milestone with the upcoming release of a stripped-down acoustic album titled '10 Years.' 'We've been recording some of our favorite songs over the past ten years acoustically, including all the way back to our first demo project from 2015,' said Morris. 'So, you kind of get a little bit of every year of the band.' Known for their energetic live shows and genre-defying sound that blends pop, rock, hip-hop and EDM, Neon Dreams first rose to fame with hits like 'Marching Bands' and 'High School Dropout.' In 2020, they won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year. 'It's been such a journey,' said Morris. 'We've played big stages around the world, but there's nothing like coming home.' Neon Dreams is performing back-to-back shows at the Carleton in Halifax, N.S., this weekend. They also have a special 10-year anniversary show planned at the Shore Club in Hubbards, N.S., on July 18. 'We're going to play a bunch of songs throughout the years, and we've got a couple of surprises,' said Morris. 'You might see the original four on stage again. One night only.' When asked what they're looking forward to over the next 10 years? 'One of the kids the other day asked, 'What's your dreams?'' said Kadillac. 'I was like, to keep doing this, to go as many places as possible, spread a lot of love.'
