A collection of breaking news briefs filed on Monday, May 5, 2025 4:07 PM Sturgeon Heights Collegiate briefly went into lockdown Monday afternoon as Winnipeg Police Service officers responded to a 'youth in distress.' In an email sent out by the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, school officials said officers were called to the Ness Avenue high school at about 2:20 p.m. 'for a report of a threats-related matter involving a student.' 'As a result, the school was initially placed into a lockdown for precautionary reasons and then, shortly thereafter, moved to a hold and secure,' the email, seen by the Free Press, said. The hold-and-secure was lifted at about 3:15 p.m. WPS spokesman Const. Pat Saydak said the incident involved a 'male youth in distress.' 3:13 PM A missing Manitoba woman who hadn't been seen since last week was located safe, Thompson RCMP said Monday night. RCMP asked for the public's help in locating Charlene Tanner, 42, Monday afternoon and announced hours later she had been found. SUPPLIED Charlene Tanner, 42 2:01 PM A missing senior last seen in Dauphin on Sunday has been found, RCMP said Monday. Curtis Brown, 63, left a home on foot at about noon and had not been seen or heard from since, police said in a news release Monday. He was reported missing to Dauphin RCMP at about 10:30 p.m. that night. RCMP asked for the public's help in finding Brown early Monday afternoon and announced less than an hour later that he had been found and is safe. 1:29 PM Popular Filipino American comedian Jo Koy is coming back to Winnipeg with his Just Being Koy Tour, which hits Canada Life Centre on Aug. 29. Koy — who played a record-breaking string of sold-out shows at the Club Regent Event Centre in 2017 — has seven specials on Comedy Central and Netflix. In June 2020, the comedian released his first variety special, Jo Koy: In His Elements, on Netflix in which Koy went to Manila, spotlighting local culture in a one-of-a-kind show featuring Filipino-American comedians, DJs and B-boys. General tickets sales start May 9 at noon at 12:16 PM The province has reduced the subsidized cost for testing well water this year. The program is available through Duracan Laboratory at 862 Dufferin Ave. The subsidized cost is $17.67, including tax, which is $7 cheaper than last year. The Manitoba government recommends people who use private wells or cisterns should test their drinking water at least once per year. The ideal time to test is in spring — after snowmelt, flooding or heavy rainstorm. Water should also be tested if a difference in the colour, clarity, odour or taste is noted. 12:13 PM Broadway Across Canada is bringing two award-winning musicals to the Centennial Concert Hall and offering a package deal for those who want to see both shows. First up is MJ, the multiple Tony-winning musical set around the making of Michael Jackson's 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The play about the pop singer, created by director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, will run Nov. 4-9. Next, Feb. 24-March 1 will see a run of the perennially popular Les Misérables, in a staging that has been called 'a reborn dream of a production.' Based on the book by Victor Hugo, it features such hits as I Dreamed a Dream, One Day More and On My Own. Officers were sent to the 200 block of Edison Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. and saw the damaged windows. No arrests have been made, and no one was injured. A WPS spokesman said he could not release any more information when asked whether the incident was a hit-and-run collision. Police said Kerry Eastman, a member of Sandy Bay First Nation who lived in Winnipeg, was found with 'injuries consistent with being assaulted' when officers arrived at about 1:50 a.m. Officers applied chest seals while providing emergency medical care until the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service arrived. Eastman was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the homicide unit at 204-986-6508, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online. 10:58 AM Crews extinguished a fire in a commercial building on Main Street on Sunday night. Firefighters were sent to the building on the 700 block at 9:46 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 10:18 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Monday. 8:38 AM The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra announced Monday that acclaimed violinist Karl Stobbe has won the audition to be the next WSO concertmaster, beginning with the 2025/26 season. Stobbe, who has been assistant concertmaster since 1996, was selected by the unanimous decision of the audition committee. 'It is an incredible honour and responsibility to be appointed the next concertmaster of the WSO,' Stobbe said in a release. 'I look forward to working with the dedicated and talented musicians of the WSO and maestro Daniel Raiskin, in serving the community of Winnipeg and beyond.' Stobbe's appointment coincides with another WSO milestone; the violinist succeeds longtime concertmaster Gwen Hoebig, who will step down at the end of the 2024/25 season after 37 years in the first violin chair.
