Activists to launch indefinite agitation demanding internal quota for SCs

A leader of the Committee for Internal Reservation among Scheduled Castes Kariyappa Gudimani has announced that thousands of activists will stage an indefinite agitation at Freedom Park in Bengaluru from Monday, urging the State government to implement internal reservation among the communities. Addressing a press conference in Ballari on Thursday, Mr. Gudimani said that the protest will continue until the State government takes a decisive step in favour of internal reservation. 'The Justice Nagamohan Das Commission has already submitted its report recommending internal reservation among Scheduled Castes. Now, the ball is in the government's court,' he said. 'We demand that the government introduce and implement internal reservation during the upcoming monsoon session of the Legislature. Our stand is unwavering. We will not withdraw our agitation until our demand is fulfilled,' he said. Mr. Gudimani criticised the successive governments for their continued reluctance to address the long-pending issue, while welcoming the Supreme Court's ruling in favour of internal reservation delivered in August last year. 'This is a just and equitable demand. Implementation of internal reservation will ensure justice for the most oppressed and under-represented communities within the Scheduled Castes. These groups have been fighting for their rightful share for over three decades,' he said. 'The Supreme Court judgement is a significant milestone in support of this cause. The Congress government must now act on it by passing the necessary legislation. All political parties in the Assembly should come together in support of this move,' he added. He also appealed to people from across the State to join the protest in large numbers to strengthen the movement.

CM delaying promotions, recruitment for SC, ST employees: BSP leader

Mysuru: Bahujan Samaj Party's Karnataka unit president M Krishnamurthy on Friday accused chief minister Siddaramaiah of not providing promotions and stopping the recruitment of Dalits to various departments of the govt. The delay in providing promotions to SC/STs exposed Siddaramaiah's commitment to the empowerment of Dalits, he told reporters. He said thousands of SC/ST employees working in various departments of the govt, including PWD, education, forest, excise, power, and agriculture, are waiting for their promotions under the roster system. The state govt has also stopped all recruitments of SC/STs until the ongoing census of the Scheduled Caste population is completed and a report is submitted on the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission of internal reservation for Dalits. The delay in promotions and recruitments of SC/STs has demoralised them in discharging their duties. This has impacted the administration of the state, he charged. Even though the then chairman of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Committee of the State Legislative Council, PM Narendra Swamy, recommended the state govt extend promotions to over 80 lecturers belonging to SC/STs as principals of state PU colleges in 2016, the successive govt withheld the promotions to 80 SC/ST lecturers in the pre-university education department from 2016, he accused. Even promotions of over 500 assistant executive engineers were withheld in the power department headed by energy minister KJ George, who is one of the close confidantes of Siddaramaiah, Krishnamurthy contended. He criticised the SC/ST ministers in the Siddaramaiah cabinet, mainly HC Mahadevappa, KH Muniyappa, Satish Jharkiholi, KN Rajanna, and Priyank Kharge, for not raising their voices against their govt over the issue of providing promotions to SC/ST govt employees.

Activists flag upper castes identifying as Scheduled Castes in Karnataka

BENGALURU: False caste claims are rocking Karnataka's ongoing caste census, with reports that thousands of upper caste individuals are fraudulently identifying as Scheduled Caste (SC) to gain government benefits. More alarming is that enumerators working under the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission have allegedly been instructed not to demand proof or verification of Beda Jangams and Budaga Jangams, and to simply accept the respondent's word as final. This revelation has prompted SC leaders and rights activists to raise red flags. 'Even in recent surveys, numbers show an increase of about 2 lakh entries, which appears suspicious,' said Renuka Prasanna, secretary, Veerashaiva Mahasabha. 'We are urging people to report their actual caste and not make false claims. Just because an enumerator records, it doesn't mean someone automatically becomes SC, there are official processes involved.' The implications of this alleged loophole are far from minor. A delegation of Scheduled Caste leaders, including former MP Dr L Hanumanthaiah and former minister H Anjaneya, met Justice Nagamohan Das to caution him about the misuse. Dr L Hanumanthaiah told TNIE, 'While we demanded there should be no false entries, the commission said there is a problem because some members have approached the High Court, asking why they were asked to show proof of Beda Jangam and Budaga Jangam identity, while others were not asked for certificates as proof. Considering this serious problem, it is good that enumerators demand proof of identity, because the number of Beda Jangams and Budaga Jangams have shot up from less than 60,000 to over 3 lakh, an increase of 400-500 per cent between 2011 and the present.''
