Texas A&M rises four spots in the RPI rankings after defeating Auburn
Texas A&M rises four spots in the RPI rankings after defeating Auburn 14-seed Texas A&M's (30-25, 11-19 SEC) postseason hopes are still alive after making it past the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday, defeating 6-seed Auburn 3-2 behind another impressive performance from starting pitcher Justin Lamkin, who struck out five Tigers in five innings on the mound. While the Aggie offense was once again inconsistent, Kaeden Kent's three-run home run was enough to get Texas A&M past the finish line, as Auburn mustered two late home runs off Lamkin and Kaeden Wilson, as the Aggie pitching staff has slowed down two of the hottest teams in the SEC after defeating Mississippi State 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon. However, during the latter half of Thursday's win, star outfielder Jace LaViolette joined Texas A&M's long list of injuries, which already includes Gavin Grahovac and Caden Sorrell after a pitch injured his left hand, breaking his ring finger, and ending his 2025 season. Sadly, this could also be his last career appearance with the Aggies, as he is slated to enter the 2026 MLB draft as a Top 10-ranked prospect. The rest of the roster will need to step up, and while Caden Sorrell could still return, it's doubtful he'll be available against 1-seed LSU on Friday night. With the win, Texas A&M has risen four spots in the RPI to No. 50, and even though the Aggies have plenty of work to do to make it back to the NCAA Tournament, this is a solid start before facing the Tigers. Texas A&M will face LSU on Friday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network. What is Texas A&M's path to the NCAA Tournament after losing to Georgia?
What is Texas A&M's path to the NCAA Tournament after losing to Georgia? Texas A&M (28-25, 11-19) didn't capitalize off of Justin Lamkin's brilliant day on the mound after throwing a career-high 15 strikeouts in a complete game shut down for just the second time in the last decade for the Aggies. While Lamkin's performance was certainly something to celebrate, the Aggies' Saturday series finale didn't go as planned. While starting pitcher Myles Patton was solid through three innings, including six strikeouts, Georgia's two-run home run led to coach Michael Earley pulling the veteran for reliable reliever Weston Moss, who also allowed a two-run home run, and two more runs before he was pulled for Caden McCoy before Clayton Freshcorn and Kaeden Wilson finished out the game. Trailing 7-4 in the ninth, all four Aggie runs came from three home runs, while Kaeden Kent's solo shot in the ninth was meaningless, as Texas A&M fell 7-5 to finish the regular season with just 11 wins in SEC play. No doubt, the Aggies' season took a significant hit after being swept by last-place Missouri at home, and with today's result, Texas A&M's path to the NCAA Tournament is much clearer. According to D1Baseball's Kendall Rogers, Texas A&M will likely need to win the SEC Tournament next week to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, even though we've been told that 13 or 14 wins in SEC play would be enough to get into the postseason. If Texas A&M had won on Saturday, two or three wins in the conference tournament would have been enough, but the Aggies' resume does not pass the smell test, and no team below 50 in the RPI has ever made the NCAA Tournament. Texas A&M is 55 in the RPI as of Saturday. Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Texas A&M's SEC Tournament first-round opponent has been announced
Texas A&M's SEC Tournament first-round opponent has been announced Texas A&M (28-15, 11-19 SEC) finished the SEC regular season with a series loss to No. 10 Georgia on the road, and despite Justin Lamkin's elite 15 strikeout performance on Friday, resulting in a 6-0 win, but didn't provide any momentum going into Saturday morning. With Myles Patton on the mound, the Aggies looked good through three innings, at least. Tossing three scoreless innings with six strikeouts, Patton wasn't the central issue even after allowing Georgia to take a 2-0 lead after Slate Alford's two-run homer, as reliever Weston Moss allowed four more runs in the seventh, which broke the game wide open. After Kaeden Kent's meaningless solo home run in the ninth, the Bulldogs likely solidified their standing at a top 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, while the Aggies are way on the outside looking in. With the loss, Texas A&M's hopes of making the NCAA Tournament are much clearer, needing to win the SEC Tournament to earn an automatic bid to the postseason, even though the narrative has been 13 to 14 wins in SEC play for the last two weeks. With 11 wins in conference play, if the Aggies had taken care of business against Missouri, instead of getting swept at home, this would still be the case. With the loss, Texas A&M is still the 14-seed, but after some movement, the Aggies will now face Mississippi State in Game 4 during the opening round on Tuesday, which will be a night game as the final matchup of the day. Mississippi State is one of the hottest teams in the conference after winning four consecutive series after defeating Missouri this weekend. Texas A&M defeats Georgia 6-0 in Game 2 behind SP Justin Lamkin's career performance
Texas A&M defeats Georgia 6-0 in Game 2 behind SP Justin Lamkin's career performance Texas A&M (28-24, 11-18 SEC) was competitive on Thursday during Game 1 of the regular season finale vs. No. 10 Georgia, but ultimately lost the game 10-6 after allowing seven runs in the third inning, while the offense fizzled out after Caden Sorrell's early three-run home run. Still, with two games left to win the series, the Aggies, especially junior pitcher Justin Lamkin, came to play. Lamkin's career night was something to witness, playing a complete game, and striking out a career-high 15 batters, while A&M's offense, like we've seen all season, relied on the long ball to get the job done, as first baseman Gavin Kash hit a three-run homer in the third, followed by catcher Bear Harrison's solo home run in the eighth to mount a 4-0 lead. With Lamkin's dominance on the mound, the Aggies weren't done adding runs, as Kash returned to the plate to deliver a 2 RBI single to produce the fifth and sixth runs, getting closer to shutting the Bulldogs out with a chance to win the series during Saturday's rubber match. While Lamkin's performance was the story of the night, Texas A&M's relentless play proved that this team will continue to fight until the very end. With Caden Sorrell out of the lineup until further notice due to his hand injury, Gavin Kash's three hits and five RBI combined with Kaeden Kent's two hits is a decent sign that other players are stepping up, even though Jace LaViolette continues to struggle at the plate. Texas A&M will face Georgia in the final game of the series on Saturday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m. CT. and will air on the SEC Network.
