Who's wearing it now: TE Justin Shorter
Shorter was originally a fifth round pick by the Bills in the 2023 NFL Draft. His rookie season was lost to injury and then he was released in the final roster cuts prior to the start of last season. Two days later, the Raiders signed him to their practice squad. He was signed to the active roster in November, but has yet to record his first NFL catch.
Worth noting is, Shorter was a college wide receiver and in the first minicamp practice this week, he was working with the wide receivers, not the tight ends. So, it seems possible the Raiders could have some other plans for him. Or they're just experimenting to see where he would best fit onto this roster.
Who wore it best: TE Raymond Chester
Chester had two stints with the Raiders. He began his career as a first round pick in 1970, making Pro Bowls in each of his first three seasons. At that time he was wearing the number 87. After four seasons in Oakland, he five seasons with the Baltimore Colts. Then he returned to Oakland in 1978 and the final four seasons of his career in Silver & Black. This time wearing the number 88. During that time, he made another Pro Bowl and following the 1980 season, he had 12 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown, helping the Raiders win their second Super Bowl.
