Who's wearing it now: TE Justin Shorter
Shorter was originally a fifth round pick by the Bills in the 2023 NFL Draft. His rookie season was lost to injury and then he was released in the final roster cuts prior to the start of last season. Two days later, the Raiders signed him to their practice squad. He was signed to the active roster in November, but has yet to record his first NFL catch.
Worth noting is, Shorter was a college wide receiver and in the first minicamp practice this week, he was working with the wide receivers, not the tight ends. So, it seems possible the Raiders could have some other plans for him. Or they're just experimenting to see where he would best fit onto this roster.
Who wore it best: TE Raymond Chester
Chester had two stints with the Raiders. He began his career as a first round pick in 1970, making Pro Bowls in each of his first three seasons. At that time he was wearing the number 87. After four seasons in Oakland, he five seasons with the Baltimore Colts. Then he returned to Oakland in 1978 and the final four seasons of his career in Silver & Black. This time wearing the number 88. During that time, he made another Pro Bowl and following the 1980 season, he had 12 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown, helping the Raiders win their second Super Bowl.

DNVR's Zac Stevens observed at last week's open practice that Nix was coaching up teammates more often than he did in 2024. "I feel like I'm a lot further [along]," Nix said last week. "Just spitting out play calls a lot easier and just processing. ... It's a lot better and a lot more enjoyable not thinking right now as opposed to what I was doing last year. It's fun, it's fun to be in the know and it's fun to have a little more of an understanding of what's going on so I can be a little more beneficial to others and help them out along the way." Advertisement Nix later noted that, unlike last year, when he gets to the line of scrimmage now, he's looking at the defense and processing and reacting to them instead of thinking about the offensive play or his footwork or a motion. His offensive responsibilities are second nature now, allowing him to focus on attacking the defense on each play. "I feel good," Nix said. "We're in a good spot.' In a Barstool Sports video that appeared on X, Skattebo was looking at photos of some of the NFL's greatest players on his phone and was asked to identify each by name. Johnson was later identified only after Skattebo received hints. It is a good thing Skattebo was not looking at photos of ex-Giants running backs that came before him. How embarrassing would it be not to know your team's backfield history and recognize Tiki Barber, Joe Morris or Ottis Anderson? A fourth-round pick out of Arizona State, Skattebo took college football by storm last season, rushing for over 1,700 yards and a whopping 21 TDs. Skattebo's effectiveness inside the red zone is the reason he is fighting for a spot on the Giants roster.
