'Freak' Longhorns freshman already looks like an NFL Player

Before this week, Texas Longhorns freshman Justus Terry was best known for being a longtime Georgia lean than took a bigger NIL package to play for Texas. The five-star defensive tackle made 247Sports' 2025 Freaks List, showcasing his exceptional athleticism and versatility. Terry has shown up to camp ripped. Listed at 6-foot-5, 268 pounds, he easily looks like he's gained 15 pounds of muscle. Terry has a frame that should accommodate more muscle as he builds his body further. He could even grow a little taller. Longhorns DE coach LaAllan Clark said that Terry be rotated into the defensive lineup to create mismatches at the line of scrimmage. Terry has competed in track and field throwing events and played basketball at the prep level, demonstrating his multifaceted talent. Per MaxPreps, Terry amassed 78 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, 13 sacks, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. Terry also made an impact in 2022, recording 38 tackles, four sacks, two fumble recoveries, and one interception over 10 games. Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.

'Straight-up better NIL package!' 5-star recruit says choice of Texas was about money

'Straight-up better NIL package!' 5-star recruit says choice of Texas was about money The recruiting landscape has definitely changed. Sure personal relationships with coaches still matter. But these days it's cash that wins the day. A "straight-up better NIL package" is why 5-star DL recruit Justus Terry says he signed with Texas. Terry was one of the last recruits to commit to Texas during the Early Signing Period and is seen as a huge get for Steve Sarkisian and his staff. Terry is the reason the Longhorns moved into the top spot on the team rankings for every recruiting service. "The late surge made by the Longhorns in the recruitment of Terry was one of the biggest upsets of this recruiting cycle," Rivals analyst Adam Friedman said after declaring Texas the No. 1 team for 2025. The Manchester High School standout is a 6-foot-5, 275-pound athlete that's on the 247Sports' 2025 Freaks List, showcasing his exceptional athleticism and versatility. He came in at No. 9 Nationally and No. 2 for defensive linemen. He is No. 3 ranked prospect in the state of Georgia according to the 247 Sports Composite. Terry, a Georgia native, has been recruited by Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart and his staff since he was in middle school. He had also committed to Georgia during his recruiting cycle. But when it came time to sign, Terry shocked the recruiting world and headed to Austin. A late NIL push was suspected, but now Terry has confirmed it in a conversation with Chad Simmons. "I don't know how else to say it — just a straight-up better NIL package,' Terry told Simmons. Regardless, Terry is now enrolled on campus in Austin and should have an immediate impact next fall. Certainly the Nov. 15 trip to Athens will have a little more juice. One thing Sark might need to worry about is making sure they keep Terry happy with his NIL package for the next few years.

How the Texas Longhorns signed the No. 1 class and won the 2025 recruiting title

Longhorns Wire The 2025 recruiting champion is the Texas Longhorns. All four major ranking services have declared UT the winner. Two of the recruiting websites named Texas the winner in December. Two have declared the Longhorns the winner since. Both 247Sports and On3 rated the UT recruiting class the best in the nation after the Early Signing Day in December. Rivals needed a rerank of the prospects before Texas took the lead. ESPN also recently named UT No. 1. How did Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff pull it off. One of the most shocking signings of the recruiting cycle was when the Longhorns landed five-star defensive tackle Justus Terry out of Georgia. Jason Suchomel of gives some insight into the key signing. "The staff really stayed on him until the very end and when everybody at the end was focused on Georgia, there was always a quiet confidence among our sources in Austin that they thought they had a really good chance to get him. They just kept chipping away. Let's be honest, in today's day and age of NIL, that was probably a big part of the decision, but you still aren't going to win those types of recruiting battles without developing good relationships, without earning the trust of Terry and the people close to him. I think the staff did a really good job with that and they were able to close the deal right at the wire, the last day of the Early Signing Period." - Jason Suchomel Adam Friedman, a national analyst for also provides some number that tipped the scales in Texas' favor. "Texas was the only team to sign a top-10 prospect from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas this year. How Texas won the 2025 high school recruiting title

© Sara Diggins/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images By the smallest margin on record, Texas won the 2025 team recruiting championship. Its win was announced two weeks ago after the final Rivals250 update. But today, as what has become an insignificant Late Signing Period opens, Adam Friedman looks at how the Longhorns put together their No. 1 class. RELATED: National Signing Day Announcement Guide | Texas' 2025 recruiting class CLASS OF 2025 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker Head coach Steve Sarkisian and company finished loaded with impact players at pretty much every position. The Longhorns pulled off one of the most shocking wins of the recruiting cycle when they landed five-star defensive tackle Justus Terry out of Georgia. "I did interview him after his Texas official visit and he said at that time it was a great visit and Texas really helped themselves in this race," said Jason Suchomel of "This staff just stayed on him when everybody thought it was going to be Georgia or maybe Auburn. The staff really stayed on him until the very end and when everybody at the end was focused on Georgia, there was always a quiet confidence among our sources in Austin that they thought they had a really good chance to get him. They just kept chipping away. "Let's be honest, in today's day and age of NIL, that was probably a big part of the decision, but you still aren't going to win those types of recruiting battles without developing good relationships, without earning the trust of Terry and the people close to him. I think the staff did a really good job with that and they were able to close the deal right at the wire, the last day of the Early Signing Period." Of course, this recruiting class is packed with impressive prospects but upon closer inspection it's clear the Longhorn's really flexed their recruiting muscles this year. 1 - Texas was the only team to sign a top-10 prospect from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas this year. Signees Jonah Williams, Kaliq Lockett, Lance Jackson and Kade Phillips represent the Longhorns in the top 10 of the Texas state rankings. Justus Terry finished at No. 4 in Georgia, Jaime Ffrench is No. 9 in Florida and No. 3 in Louisiana is James Simon. "With so many guys going out of state, the staff knew early on they're going to have to recruit nationally," Suchomel said. "I don't think Steve Sarkisian minds recruiting nationally at all. Being in the SEC, they feel like it kind of opens up their footprint for Florida, for Georgia, for Louisiana. Certainly they have coaches with ties to those areas. They went out and did a great job in those states." 9 - The number of points between No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Georgia in the team rankings. This is the smallest margin of victory since Rivals began tracking the national recruiting race in 2002. However, top-100 prospect J'Vari Flowers, who just reclassified up to the 2025 class, has the potential to flip the script if he decides to sign with Georgia. John Garcia Jr. has more on the drama surrounding Flowers and the abrupt acceleration in his recruitment. 2 - Top 100 prospect Kade Phillips originally committed to Texas in early July but flipped to LSU the following month. When he flipped back to Texas and finally signed with the Longhorns, Phillips became the only member of this class of signees to commit to Texas twice. "The Texas staff just did a good job again," Suchomel said. "They're like bulldogs. If a guy commits elsewhere, they almost look at that like a challenge. They don't panic, they don't give up. So they stayed with Phillips, built good relationships there, the entire defensive backfield staff did. From my conversations with him, Kade just ultimately thought that maybe being at the University of Texas and being a Texas kid, it would open more doors for him in the long run." 4 -Texas signed four five-star prospects this cycle: Terry, Williams, Lockett and Jackson. The only other team to sign four five-star prospects this year was Oregon. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH TEXAS FANS AT
