Vikings acquire RB Jordan Mason from 49ers and give him a new 2-year deal, AP source says

The Minnesota Vikings acquired restricted free agent running back Jordan Mason from the San Francisco 49ers and rewarded him with a two-year deal worth up to $12 million. Two people familiar with the deal confirmed the trade that sends a 2026 sixth-round pick to San Francisco on Saturday night. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither team had announced the move. There is also a pick swap in 2025 with the Niners flipping the 187th overall pick for the 160th. ESPN first reported the trade. San Francisco had previously placed a second-round tender on Mason worth $5.4 million for 2025. That gave the 49ers the right to match any offer made to Mason or receive a second-round pick as compensation. But with San Francisco unwilling to pay that high a salary to a backup and Minnesota unwilling to part with such a high pick, the sides reached the trade instead. The deal the Vikings reached with Mason includes $7 million in fully guaranteed money, one of the people said. The 25-year-old Mason, an undrafted free agent in 2022, has been very effective as Christian McCaffrey's backup in limited action for San Francisco and now gives the Vikings an option to team with Aaron Jones. The 30-year-old Jones re-signed with Minnesota on a two-year, $20 million this offseason. Mason rushed for 789 yards and three TDs in 12 games last season for San Francisco, averaging 5.2 yards per carry — fifth best among all qualifying running backs. Mason has averaged 5.3 yards per carry for his carry, ranking eighth best among all running backs with at least 200 carries in the Super Bowl era. Mason is the latest key player to leave San Francisco in an offseason exodus so far this month. The 49ers have cut three key contributors from last season, also traded star receiver Deebo Samuel to Washington and saw 11 other free agents leave for other teams this week as the team resets its roster following a disappointing 6-11 season in 2024. San Francisco did bring one player back Saturday, agreeing to a two-year, $8 million contract with nine-time Pro Bowl fullback Kyle Juszczyk just days after he was cut, a person familiar with the deal told the AP on condition of anonymity because the move hadn't been announced. The Niners had officially released Juszczyk on Tuesday instead of paying him a $4.1 million salary this season and up to an additional $500,000 in offseason workout and per-game roster bonuses. The team took on a $3.6 million dead cap charge with the move, but brought him back on the new deal. Juszczyk was nearly cut last season, but agreed to take a pay cut to stay in San Francisco. The 33-year-old Juszczyk was one of the first players signed after coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch took over in 2017 and has been a key part of the offense since, thanks to his versatility. In an era when few teams use fullbacks, Juszczyk has played about half the offensive snaps during his time with San Francisco and has made the Pro Bowl all eight seasons with the team and nine times overall. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2023 and second-teamer in 2024 after fullbacks were added back as a position for All-Pro the past two years. Juszczyk had 19 catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns last season, while also rushing for 26 yards and a TD. He has 184 catches for 1,895 yards and 13 TDs in eight seasons with the Niners, along with 237 yards rushing and six more TDs on the ground.

49ers bring back Kyle Juszczyk on 2-year deal days after cutting him, report says

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk is returning to the San Francisco 49ers on a two-year, $8 million contract just days after being cut, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. 9-time Pro Bowler has chance to accomplish rare feat after re-signing with 49ers

9-time Pro Bowler has chance to accomplish rare feat after re-signing with 49ers Fullback Kyle Juszczyk's return opens the door for him to accomplish an extremely rare feat in San Francisco 49ers history. ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday morning reported Juszczyk would be returning to the 49ers on a two-year deal after being released by the team early in free agency. Juszczyk has been with San Francisco since 2017 when he signed as a free agent from the Baltimore Ravens. A two-year deal gives him a chance to hit the 49ers' 10-Year Club − a wall in the team facility dedicated to players who spent 10-plus seasons with the organization. Only 51 players in 49ers history have made the 10-Year Club, and no player has done it since left tackle Joe Staley got there in 2016. Now San Francisco has two players on the roster potentially in line to reach the 10-Year Club in 2026 with Juszczyk and tight end George Kittle, a 49ers 2017 draft pick. However, Juszczyk's path would be exceedingly rare within the exclusive group. Of the 51 players in the club, only nine were not 49ers draft picks. Three of those nine were undrafted rookies, which leaves six players in the club for which the 49ers weren't their first NFL team. Of those six, one (quarterback Steve Young) was acquired via trade. Of the remaining five, two (wide receiver Mike Wilson and defensive lineman Dwaine Board) were released during their first preseason by the teams that drafted them. Of the remaining three, two (TE Brent Jones and linebacker Mike Walter) spent at least part of their rookie seasons on another NFL roster before joining the 49ers in their second year. That leaves one player, kicker Ray Wersching, who took the path Juszczyk is on. Wersching spent his first four NFL seasons with the San Diego Chargers. In 1977 he signed with the 49ers and spent his final 11 seasons in red and gold. Juszczyk was a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in the 2013 draft. He was with them for four seasons before joining head coach Kyle Shanahan with the 49ers as a free agent in 2017. Despite the brief hiccup of his release, Juszczyk is now in line to get into the 10-Year Club with a rare distinction of spending multiple years in the NFL before making his way to the 49ers.

49ers stars, wives react after team brings back fan-favorite Kyle Juszczyk: 'Still isn't over'

Claire Kittle, the wife of San Francisco 49ers star George, had her heart "ripped out" when the team decided to move on from Kyle Juszczyk. Well, she can sew her chest back up, as the Niners decided to bring back the fan-favorite fullback on a two-year deal. George and Christian McCaffrey both all but confirmed the news on Instagram by posting pictures of themselves with Juszczyk. "Boys are back," Kittle captioned a photo on his Instagram story of the three players together. McCaffrey wrote simply, "Back" with a picture of himself and Juszczyk. Juszczyk's wife, Kristin, wrote an emotional ode to San Francisco amid the news. "This past week has really made Kyle and I reflect on our past 8 years in the Bay," she wrote. "We grew up here. We turned friends into family here. We won championships here and we lost championships here. We feel so incredibly blessed to have called the bay home for the past 8 years. It's truly been the best years of our lives. Kyle's curtain isn't closed just yet and we couldn't be more happy and emotional to stay home!!! We're forever Faithful." Claire also posted an infamous scene from "The Notebook," where Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling kiss in the rain after noting their relationship "still isn't over." Juszczyk, 33, has been a powerhouse in the 49ers' offense since he was first brought on in 2017 by head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. During that time, he earned eight of his nine Pro Bowl nods and was a first-team All-Pro in 2023.
