New BMW M2 CS smashes Nurburgring record for compact cars

Jörg Weidinger drove the BMW M2 CS to a new Nurburgring record for compact cars. They call it the 'Green Hell', with 20.832 kilometres of undulating tar, known for its significant elevation changes and a bumpy surface. Achieving a new record time at Germany's Nürburgring-Nordschleife is a notable achievement, and BMW has done just that in the compact class of cars, with its new M2 CS. With BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger behind the wheel, the BMW M2 CS has knocked the Audi RS3 off its throne as the fastest compact car on the 'Ring. With a time of 7:25.5 minutes, Weidinger beat the Audi's previous record by eight seconds. "The BMW M2 CS has achieved a significant milestone with its lap time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nordschleife, showcasing the potential for combining performance, technology and exceptional driving dynamics into a single vehicle," BMW M boss Franciscus van Meel exclaimed. 'We are proud that the M2 CS has once again set a new benchmark in the compact car class with this lap time.' The M2 CS is not the fastest BMW around the 'Ring however. That honour belongs to the M4 CSL, which lapped the gruelling circuit in 7:18.137s.

BMW M2 CS sets new Nürburgring lap record

The new BMW M2 CS has set a new lap record for compact cars around the 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife track. With a lap time of seven minutes 25.5 seconds, the BMW blitzed the iconic German track more than seven seconds faster than the previous record holder, the Audi RS3, which achieved 7:33.123 a year ago. The new record was set by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger on April 11, six weeks before the latest M2 CS had its official unveiling at the Villa d'Este concours at Lake Como in Italy. Impressively, the new record is a full 13 seconds faster than the 7:38.7 set by Weidinger in the previous M2 in April 2023. The big improvement is attributed to the M2 CS gaining power and shedding weight. The BMW M2 CS is 30kg lighter thanks to the use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic in parts of the body, and forged M light-alloy wheels. The high-revving 3.0 l six-cylinder inline M TwinPower Turbo engine was also boosted to produce 390kW of power and 650Nm, respective improvements of 37kW and 50Nm over the old unit. The M2 CS sends its muscle power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M Sport differential for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than a standard M2. The top speed of the M2 CS, which comes with the M Driver's Package as standard, is electronically limited to 302km/h. A chassis tweak sees the special model getting a ride height lowered by 8mm and special suspension tuning to improve handling. The mapping of the Dynamic Stability Control and M Dynamic Mode are optimised for racetrack use. The vehicle comes standard with track tyres (275/35 ZR19 at the front and 285/30 ZR20 at the rear) but owners can specify more aggressive ultra-track tyres or standard sport tyres. To be produced in limited numbers, the new BMW M2 CS will be available in SA from the second quarter of 2026, with pricing not yet confirmed. The fastest BMW production car around the Nürburgring remains the M4 CSL with a lap time of 7:18.137.

Watch the BMW M2 CS set a Nürburgring lap record

Take almost 7m30s out of your day to watch this new 'compact class' lap record The new BMW M2 CS has set a blistering 7m25.5s lap time around the Nürburgring's Nordschliefe. Schnell, indeed. Yup, BMW's Jörg Weidinger had a good day at the office. The German driver went eight seconds quicker than the Audi RS3 is his 526bhp rear-driven M2 CS, and you can watch the full lap in the video below. Go on, a little bit of procrastination won't hurt. Weidinger actually shaved 13 seconds off his previous best in the M2. That was 2023's 7m38.7s record, which was usurped by the RS3 last year. If you're thinking there's some annual one-upping going on, you could well be right. Of course, the CS isn't just any M2. The 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six in this car produces 82bhp more than the old M2 CS, and there's 479lb ft of torque too. You also get an eight-speed auto box, a performance exhaust, suspension that sits 8mm lower than the 'regular' M2 and optional carbon ceramic brakes. There are also model-specific engine mounts and plenty of carbon-fibre-reinforced bits (roof, bonnet, interior trim) – dropping around 30kg off the M2's kerbweight.

The 2026 BMW M2 CS has set a new lap record for compact cars around the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit. The lap was piloted by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger, who maneuvered the M2 CS to an official lap time of 7:25.534. Weidinger's new time is nearly eight seconds faster than the previous record holder and more than 13 seconds faster than the previous best M2. Lap records at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit can be fleeting, but that doesn't make them any less impressive. The 2026 BMW M2 CS not only set a new lap record for compact cars around the famous German circuit but also demolished the previous record by nearly eight seconds. BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger piloted the M2 CS to a time of 7:25.534, making it both the first M2 and the first compact car under the 7:30 mark. Weidinger's lap is nearly eight seconds faster than the 7:33.123 set by the Audi RS3, which formerly held the class record. It's also more than 13 seconds faster than the previous best time for an M2, with Weidinger setting a lap time of 7:38.706 in a standard M2 in 2023. Perhaps more impressive than either of those metrics, the new M2 CS's time is three seconds faster than the M3 CS's time set in 2023, despite being down 20 horsepower. BMW The base M2 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and makes 473 horsepower. Torque figures for the standard car are split based on transmission, with three-pedal cars rated at 406 pound-feet and two-pedal cars at 443 pound-feet. The M2 CS has significantly more gusto. While it uses the same engine, the CS is rated at 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It's not just brawnier, the M2 CS is leaner than the base car too. Between the aluminum wheels, carbon buckets, and various other carbon bits and bobs, the CS is nearly 100 pounds lighter than the standard car. Jack Fitzgerald Associate News Editor Jack Fitzgerald's love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn't afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf.

How Fast is the New BMW M2 CS? It Just Shattered a Nurburgring Record

The BMW M2 CS is shaping up to be a great performance car. It's been just over a month since BMW revealed the coupe, and it's already netted a lap record. Except the CS earned it more than a month before its official debut. The M2 CS now holds the compact car lap record at the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit, lapping the 12.94-mile course in 7:25.5 on April 11, 2025. It beat the previous record by eight seconds, set in June 2024 by an Audi RS3 . BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger set the new record, beating the previous M2 lap by 13 seconds, which he set in April 2023. BMW M boss Franciscus van Meel called it a 'significant milestone' for the car. Powering the new M2 is BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six with a power bump. The CS produces 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Despite weighing 3,770 pounds, the coupe can hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds and reach a 188-mph top speed. The car lacks a manual transmission, but its omission doesn't seem to be deterring buyers. BMW has already revealed that there's ' huge demand ' for the car, and it is higher than expected in some markets. It's forcing the automaker to increase the allotment of M2 CSs to those areas, including the United States, but it won't be cheap. The M2 CS starts at $99,775, which is a lot of money for a 2 Series. But buyers can take solace in the fact they have one of the quickest coupes around the Nordschleife with a stellar powertrain under the hood. That sounds quite enticing. 2026 BMW M2 CS Nürburgring Nordschleife Lap Record Photo by: BMW Here's More From BMW : BMW Has a 'Higher Demand' for the M5 Wagon in the US BMW: 'The Combustion Engine Is Our Foundation' Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use .
