Tribals in Anakapalli district protest demanding roads

1 2 Visakhapatnam: Tribals from Jeelugulova and Sompuram Bandha villages in Madugula mandal of Anakapalli district organised a symbolic donkey yatra on Saturday to mark World Indigenous Peoples Day and highlight their ongoing struggle for basic road infrastructure. According to the protestors, despite living in officially recognised settlements and having been granted housing and utility access, they remain cut off from essential transport facilities. "Our donkey protest was meant to highlight the gap between govt promises and ground realities. Without proper roads, emergencies such as medical treatment and childbirth turn into life-threatening ordeals," they said. "Over four years have passed since two-room houses were sanctioned for 23 tribal families on Saamalamma Hill, yet the promised land pattas have not been issued. Bureaucratic apathy, frequent transfer of officials, and unfulfilled assurances have only compounded our problems. Although the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) intervened and claimed progress, conditions on the ground remain bleak. Further, tribal lands are being encroached upon by non-tribal entities, often with official complicity. This failure to protect tribal rights, while simultaneously celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day, exposes a deep hypocrisy. Our protest is not just a demand for roads, but for our dignity, recognition, and justice. Immediate field inspections and administrative accountability are urgently needed," they added. CPM leader K. Govinda Rao, tribal leader E Narasimhulu, and others participated in the protest. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). MGNREGS workers demand payment of wage arrears

Demanding immediate release of wage arrears by the government, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) workers staged a protest at their workplaces at Panasalapadu and Losingi villages in Anakapalli district on Wednesday. Addressing the workers, Andhra Pradesh Vyavasaya Karmika Sangam (A.P. Agricultural Workers Sangam) vice-president K. Govinda Rao said that 27 lakh daily wage workers and their families across the State were struggling as their wages of ₹8,500 crore have not been paid by the government. The salaries of 15,000 employees, recruited under the scheme from the village to the State-level, have not been paid their salaries for the past three months, he alleged. Workers in rural areas are dependent on MNREGS for a livelihood during the summer months and their wages have to be paid within 15 days of the completion of the work. The technical assistants, field assistants recruited at the Mandal Computer Centres, for the supervision of MNREGS works, and various levels of employees recruited at the State-level have not been paid their salaries for the past few months, Mr. Govinda Rao alleged. The workers would organise an agitation after a week if the wage arrears were not cleared by then, he added.

Tribals stage protest at Narsipatnam RDO's office seeking roads, school and safe drinking water

The tribal people of 15 villages in Anakapalli district took out a rally carrying 'dolis', as a symbolic protest, to the RDO's office at Narsipatnam, where the Collector participated in the Spandana programme on Monday. They demanded among other things laying the foundation stone and commencement of construction of the road to Donkada village, of Golugonda mandal, for which funds were sanctioned in 2023 but the work was not commenced. This was forcing the villagers to carry pregnant women and sick persons in dolis. The tribal people also sought opening of a school at Donkadaa and construction of roads to Neellabandha, Jeelugulova and Pasuvulabandha of V. Madugula and Rolugunta mandals. They sought provision of safe drinking water to Kalyanalova, Jeelugulova and Pasuvulabandha villages. They said that the excise personnel were booking cases, in contravention of the rules, on the tribals of Pitrigedda, Jajulabandha and Pedagaruvu, when they were transporting 'jeelugu kallu' (toddy). The officials were, however, not taking any action on the 'belt shops' (unauthorised liquor shops), which were operating in the Agency areas, they alleged. CPI(M) district secretariat member K. Govinda Rao, Gemimili Vasu Kondathambila Sattibabu and K. Venkata Rao were among those who led the protest.
