Madurai Collector honours freedom fighters on Independence Day
Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar on Friday hoisted the national flag and handed over welfare measures worth ₹42.21 lakh to 42 beneficiaries at the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at the Armed Reserve Police Grounds here.
The Collector inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at a parade presented by the police, the fire and rescue services personnel, the home guards and the NCC cadets.
Mr. Praveen Kumar honoured freedom fighters and their family members at the event. The Collector also honoured 314 government employees of various departments for their meritorious service. Pulmonologist M. Palaniappan was honoured for his contribution in the field of medicine.
A total of 1,021 students from various schools in Madurai district presented cultural performances. Traditional and cultural events were held as part of the Independence Day celebrations. The audience were captivated by the performances of the children.
Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Prem Anand Sinha, Madurai City Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan, Superintendent of Police B.K. Arvind, District Revenue Officer K. Anbalagan and other officials were present at the Independence Day celebrations.
Earlier, the Collector visited the Gandhi Memorial Museum. He garlanded and paid floral tributes to the Gandhi statue at the Gandhi Memorial Museum.
