A major crop in the region, mango cultivation spans 10,000 hectares in Mandya: DC

Deputy Commissioner Kumar on Monday said mango cultivation has expanded across approximately 10,000 hectares in Mandya district, and to support farmers with better market access, a Mango and Jackfruit Mela has been organised. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 'Mango and Jackfruit Mela, Plant Expo, and Sales Fair – 2025', organised jointly by the district administration, zilla panchayat, and the Department of Horticulture. Dr. Kumar highlighted that mango is one of the major horticultural crops in the region, with the district producing over 20,000 tonnes annually. 'The mela has been organised to ensure quality mangoes are made available to consumers at fair prices, to foster stronger farmer-consumer relationships, and to provide encouragement to mango growers,' he added. Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.R. Nandini said the mela is being held in the district after several years. Alongside the mango and jackfruit displays, a plant exhibition and sales event has also been arranged to provide high-quality fruit saplings to farmers and the general public, she added. The mela features over 15 stalls, showcasing more than 40 varieties of mangoes brought by local farmers as well as growers from other districts. The focus is on promoting chemical-free and carbide-free fruits, the organisers said. In addition, over 10 varieties of jackfruit are on display, drawing interest from consumers. The organisers have urged the public to visit the mela and make the most of this opportunity. Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi, Deputy Director of Horticulture Roopashree, and other senior officials were present. The exhibition features popular varieties such as Badami, Raspuri, Mallika, Malgova, Sendura, Kesar, Sakkarebuthi, Imam Pasand, Totapuri, Langra, Rumani, Chilak Ras, Amlet, and Madanapalle — all of which attracted the visitors. The mela also showcases more than 10 varieties of jackfruit, including Gubbi Bakke, Bakke, Cheluru Bakke, Ajji Halasu, Sakkare Pattana Onake, Gurugala Thota, and Chandra Halasu, each unique in flavor and texture, they said. An array of grafted saplings and seedlings are being sold at government-approved prices at the expo. Varieties available include lemon, mango, guava (Allahabad Safeda), sapota (cricket ball), drumstick (PKM1), and arecanut, providing an opportunity for those looking to start or expand fruit cultivation.

Civil defence drill conducted at KRS

The Mandya district administration conducted Operation Abhyas, a civil defence drill, at Krishnaraja Sagar, simulating three emergency situations arising out of a boat accident, fire, and blast, on Sunday. This was part of the nationwide drills ordered by the government in the wake of the tensions on the India and Pakistan border, following a deadly terror attack on tourists at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. The authorities said the objective of the drill was to showcase the coordinated efforts of the district administration, police, fire department, health department, and other agencies, and also highlight the precautions that the public needs to take. The simulated scene involved a boat capsizing at the boating point in the Brindavan gardens, following which the control room was immediately alerted. This resulted in a sequence of actions by the authorities, leading to contacting the fire department, which rushed to the spot with rescue equipment to save the passengers of the capsized boat. As accidents tend to result in the convergence of a large crowd, making it difficult for rescue personnel to move freely, the police stepped in, controlled the crowd, and ensured smooth movement of fire and ambulance vehicles. Just as the fire and police personnel were at the job, the medical and paramedical team from the Health Department were alerted, and they reached the spot, providing medical assistance to the victims and rushing those requiring further treatment to the nearest hospitals. Another scenario was also simulated as part of the drill, involving a fire accident at the police guest house. A siren was sounded to alert everyone, control notified, and all departments were put on a standby to rush to meet any contingency. During the fire-rescue drill, individuals trapped on the first floor were rescued and brought down safely, and provided medical assistance. The third drill entailed a bomb blast, and a siren was sounded to alert the key players, who saw the bomb disposal squad, accompanied by a canine unit, scouring the area while medical teams provided first aid to the injured. Deputy Commissioner Kumar, Mandya Zilla Panchayat CEO K.R. Nandini, and Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi oversaw the drill. Senior officials from various departments were part of the drill, in addition to NSS students and Home Guard personnel.

Mandya achieves 102% target under MGNREGA

Mandya district in Karnataka has set a new benchmark under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by achieving 102.55% of its annual target for 2024–25, providing significant livelihood opportunities to rural communities. The Mandya zilla panchayat (ZP), which oversees implementation of the programme, has earned praise for its effective execution. A total of 3,44,904 families were issued job cards, of which 1,46,039 cards remained active, benefiting 2,58,697 individuals under the scheme. Against the targeted 27 lakh man-days for the district, Mandya successfully generated 27,69,096 man-days of employment. Among the taluks, K.R. Pet stood out by achieving 144.55% of its target, creating 7,64,005 man-days against the expected 5,28,538. Maddur taluk followed, achieving 106.63% by generating 6,89,083 man-days against a target of 6,49,083. The remaining five taluks recorded achievements between 70% and 90% of their respective targets. The zilla panchayat noted that MGNREGA has played a crucial role in reducing rural migration by providing employment opportunities within villages themselves. For 2025–26, action plans prepared by the gram panchayats have been approved, ensuring that the upcoming works are both necessary and beneficial to the community. Officials have been directed to focus on effective and timely implementation of the projects. Importantly, the daily wage under MGNREGA has been revised from ₹349 to ₹370 per person, effective April 1, 2025. With the revision, a family completing 100 days of work can now earn ₹37,000 annually, compared to ₹34,900 the previous year. The Union Ministry of Rural Development announced the revised rates through a recent order. Mandya ZP CEO K.R. Nandini lauded the achievement, describing MGNREGA as a 'ray of hope' for the rural population. She urged villagers to fully utilise the benefits of the programme, especially with the increased wage rate now in effect.

Set a goal and timeline as ‘UPSC journey is unique': Mandya ZP CEO Nandini

Mandya zilla panchayat CEO K.R. Nandini said that self-confidence plays a crucial role in preparing for competitive examinations such as the UPSC and KPSC. She was addressing civil service aspirants during an interactive session organised by the competitive examination training centre at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) here on Monday. During the session, Ms. Nandini responded to a wide range of questions from candidates, including how to approach exam preparation, how much time to dedicate to studying, techniques for effective retention, strategies for answering different types of questions, and managing subject-wise preparation. She offered practical tips, such as planning daily schedules to cover multiple subjects, choosing understanding over rote memorisation, writing down key points to aid recall during exams, and developing a clear strategy based on the exam pattern. 'Set a goal and a timeline to achieve it. Even if you face a few failures, do not get demotivated; the exam is not the end. There are always other opportunities,' she said. Ms. Nandini also urged aspirants not to compare themselves with others, emphasising that 'each UPSC journey is unique.' She encouraged candidates to stay updated on current affairs and recommended NCERT books as essential study material. She also reminded them that they could write the UPSC examination in Kannada if they were more comfortable with the language. B. Range Gowda, Joint Director of the Social Welfare Department, echoed this sentiment, stating that passion is more important than the medium of instruction. 'Write the exam in whichever language you are most confident in,' he said. He also recommended developing a competitive spirit and engaging in group discussions to deepen understanding and boost confidence. KSOU Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa V. Halse congratulated Ms. Nandini for securing the first rank in the 2017 UPSC examination and praised her for inspiring future civil servants. Registrar K.B. Praveena, registrar (evaluation) H. Vishwanath, and centre coordinator Jainahali Satyanarayana Gowda, among others, were present.
