Extortion TWIST in Balachandra Menon case; Actress Minu Muneer's lawyer arrested

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) The Kochi Cyber Police have arrested Sangeeth Louis, a lawyer and filmmaker from Kollam in the ongoing extortion case involving actor-filmmaker Balachandra Menon . He is accused of attempting to extort money from Balachandra Menon by allegedly threatening to publicize fabricated allegations. Lawyer held in extortion case against veteran actor As reported by Asianet News, the arrest was made from his residence in Ayyanthole, Thrissur. Sangeeth is the second accused in the case, following the earlier arrest of actress Minu Muneer, who was identified as the prime accused. Social media allegations led to legal showdown The controversy erupted in the wake of the Hema Committee report. It was when Minu Muneer took to social media to level serious allegations of sexual misconduct against Balachandra Menon. 'He Kissed Me Forcefully': Actress Minu Muneer's Bold Claims Against Top Malayalam Actors In response, Balachandra Menon filed a police complaint that accused her of making defamatory and obscene remarks. Minu was subsequently arrested and later released on bail by the High Court. However, the investigation continued which lead to Sangeeth's arrest. According to police, both Minu and Sangeeth were working together as part of a planned effort to intimidate and extort Menon. Adding to the twist, Sangeeth Louis is no stranger to controversy. Reportedly, the police revealed that he has been an accused in multiple cases. Sangeeth was even booked under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). This happened in the year 2023. Despite these claims, Sangeeth insists his intentions were misunderstood. He told police that he merely informed Balachandra Menon about other actresses who were allegedly ready to testify against him. However, cyber police have reportedly recovered key data from both Sangeeth and Minu's phones that suggest coordinated attempts to extract money from the veteran actor. The extortion attempt dates back to September last year, and with Sangeeth now in custody, the case appears to be moving toward a deeper investigation.

19 goons jailed, eight deported under KAAPA in six months in Ernakulam district

KOCHI: As the first half of 2025 nears completion, the Ernakulam Rural police have jailed 19 troublemakers and deported eight others from the district after invoking the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 2007, a move the cops said has helped curb serious crimes. Besides them, 20 people have been ordered to report before DySPs or the station house officers concerned on a designated day each week and sign the register as mandated by the KAAPA. 'We used KAAPA strategically and effectively to curb serious crimes. We have observed a significant decline in offences committed by habitual offenders,' said a source with the Ernakulam Rural police. Explaining the process, the official said the police regularly monitor Rowdy History Sheets (RHS) at all stations. 'When a listed offender is involved in a serious crime again, we promptly recommend invoking KAAPA. Depending on the severity of the offence, the person is either imprisoned or deported, following approval from the district collector or the range DIG, respectively,' said the official, adding that to ensure swift action, they maintain updated case files on known repeat offenders. 'Whenever one is found involved in a new crime, we gather all relevant case data immediately and proceed with legal recommendations,' he said. In addition to KAAPA, the Rural police are also using the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PITNDPS Act) to tackle drug-related crimes, said the official. 'As of June 23, 15 individuals have been jailed under the PITNDPS Act in the district. The Ernakulam Rural police have been the most effective in implementing the PITNDPS Act (in the state),' he said. Ernakulam Rural district police chief M Hemalatha said there has been a visible reduction in crimes committed by repeat offenders due to such enforcement measures. 'However, a six-month period is too short for comprehensive assessment. Like all policing efforts, sustained action is essential for lasting impact,' she said.

30 habitual offenders detained under KAAPA so far this year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Intensifying its action against history-sheeters, the city police have taken 30 habitual offenders into preventive detention under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA) so far this year. The detention orders of the repeated offenders were passed by the district collector acting on the inputs provided by the police department. Police sources said that KAAPA is being used wide and effective to crack down on those involved in heinous crimes. Those detained will be jailed for a year. Apart from preventive detention, the police have banished 37 serial offenders from the district. DCP Nakul Rajendra Deshmukh said the city police have been pro-actively preparing Rowdy History-Sheets (RHS) in all the police stations so that when they repeat a serious offence, the department can quickly recommend action against them under the KAAPA.

KAAPA proceedings can be initiated against absconding accused: HC

A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court has observed that proceedings under Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) (KAAPA) Act can be initiated against an accused who is absconding. The court made the observation while recently allowing a petition challenging the detention of an accused by his wife, under the KAAPA. The court observed that when the accused is neither apprehended nor in custody there is no legal impediment in initiating proceedings under KAAPA against an accused who had absconded after the last prejudicial activity. The Malappuram District Police Chief should have been more vigilant to take quick actions to initiate proceedings under KAAP Act especially when the accused is qualified to be booked under the Act. The petition contended that there is inordinate delay in mooting the proposal as well as in passing the detention order after the last prejudicial activity. The delay will get the live link between the last prejudicial activity and the purpose of detention snapped. The court further observed that it cannot be ignored that a detention order under Section 3(1) of KAAPA has a significant impact on the personal as well as fundamental rights of an individual. When there is undue delay in making the proposal and passing the detention order, the same would undermine its validity particularly when no convincing or plausible explanation is offered for the delay.
