DNA from site of ‘random' Devil's Den killings matches suspect's: Police

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KARK) — Arkansas State Police (ASP) say that DNA matching Andrew James McGann was found at the scene of a fatal double stabbing at Devil's Den State Park in West Fork. McGann was arrested on Wednesday in connection to the Saturday killings. ASP Col. Mike Hagar said Thursday that the attack on the hiking couple appeared to be random, and the motive was still unknown. Arkansas State Police make arrest in Devil's Den double homicide case Hagar pointed out the structure of the investigation, which began with roughly 500 tips from the public, including photos from homes and businesses near the park that showed McGann's car, which investigators determined to be a KIA Stinger. Once the car was known, ASP says that investigators were able to vet tips and suspects, leading to McGann's arrest. He was arrested without incident at a Springdale barbershop, officials said. McGann made statements during his interview with investigators that indicated he'd stabbed husband and wife, 43-year-old Clinton David Brink and 41-year-old Cristen Amanda Brink, on a trail at Devil's Den State Park, ASP reports. Meanwhile, ASP Criminal Investigation Division Maj. Stacy Rhodes backed up an earlier statement from Hagar that social media comments caused significant harm in the investigation. She continued to decry 'keyboard warriors,' adding, 'if you're an expert, you're probably not on social media.' Hagar explained that the investigation began with 'those two little girls,' the 7- and 9-year-old daughters of the Brinks who were with them. Hagar reiterated that misinformation and speculation about the deaths on social media have hurt the family. 'This is not an episode of 'CSI' and it's not going to be wrapped up in an hour,' Hagar said. Rhodes said that while Clinton Brinks was being attacked Cristen Brink led the girls to safety, then returned to aid her husband. Washington County Prosecuting Attorney Brandon Carter said he wanted the public to know they are safe. While suspects are innocent until proven guilty, he said, 'we have the right defendant in the case.' Carter added that he would be out hiking in the park as soon as the trail was reopened. Officials throughout complimented the other agencies that supported the state police in the investigation, including police and sheriff's departments.

Drone pilot's ‘harrowing' rescue saves lost pup just in time as coyote attacks

An Arkansas couple happily reunited with their dog who went missing for four days and was found by a drone pilot, who performed a dramatic rescue to save the pup's life in the nick of time. After their beloved little dog Whiskey managed to get out of their backyard, Jordan and Brooke Allen did everything they could think of to track him down, KARK reported. 'We had posted a lot of posts on Facebook about him being missing, and somebody posted saying try to get in touch with somebody with a drone,' Brooke told the outlet. That's when they went to Natural State Drone Solutions in Russellville and drone pilot Chris Laughlin. 'They called me up and they sound pretty desperate,' Laughlin said to KARK. That's when the long search from the sky began. And it ended with a bizarre and dramatic save when the dog was attacked by a coyote under the surveillance of the company's drone. 'Harrowing last second rescue of a dachshund that had been missing for 4 days. The pup is fine and will be checked out with the vet as a precaution,' the company said in a July 15 Facebook post. It posted the 11-minute drone footage on its page. Warning: Video shows dog attack, which might be triggering. 'Found this pup at the exact right time. Right as I found it, a coyote snagged it. I dove down and hit the coyote with the prop wash and it dropped it. I hovered about 10 feet over it to protect it,' the pilot said. The attack was videoed by the drone — from Whiskey moving through the greenery, to him being plucked up by his owners. 'It caught its breath as the side by side got there and ran from the side by side,' the post described. 'The owners caught up to him and brought him to safety. If I hadn't found him, that coyote would have had him for good. It was hunting him. The family is so happy to have their pup home!' Russellville is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Little Rock.
