With love, from Palestine: Haya's Kitchen has a brand new home at KAVE
Who doesn't love a supper-club-to-permanent success story? We've had many of these delicious tales come out of Dubai in the past few years – Neha Mishra's A Story of Food to Kinoya, Gabriela Chamorro's Girl and the Goose, the anonymous-chef-led Hawkerboi, husband-and-wife duo Salam and Tareq's Dukkan El Baba from Birria Tacos, to name a few. The latest entrant to this club is Haya's Kitchen, Palestinian chef Haya Bishouty's culinary baby. What started as Sufra, a Covid-era awakening from corporate slumber, and a series of workshops focused on Palestinian food skills around town, is now a permanent kitchen. Haya's Kitchen Meets KAVE has been operational for about six months, with a grand launch coming up soon, and is located inside KAVE in a quiet lane of Alserkal Avenue. The story Respective founders and friends Haya and Rania Kana'an welcome you with open arms into their space – a space all about creating a community of eco-conscious, kind humans, featuring a cavernous co-working area laid out with communal tables, surrounded by retail pop-ups of sustainable, regional, upcycling brands. Apparel, jewellery, vintage accessories, ceramics, bags and more, and in the corner, the kitchen. The synergy of these two concepts comes from the roots they intend to honour. Haya's Kitchen started as and continues to be Haya's personal journey into discovering, understanding and embracing her heritage. KAVE brings back the practices of the ancestors, the cave people, creating a system of conscious living – take from the Earth, give back to it. Both women are paying tribute to their heritage, their tetas or grandmothers, by reviving this way of life, whether through food or communal belonging. The food The menu at Haya's Kitchen Meets KAVE follows a pattern of seasonal and personal cooking, the core of any cuisine and culture. You can sample dishes like the msakhan and macarona bil'laban, unadulterated versions of the childhood classics. At a time when food was consumed depending on what the Earth was giving us, the tetas used locally-sourced ingredients and passed these recipes down from one generation to the next, as we see in the selection of seasonal salads with bulgur wheat and tomatoes. No food is wasted, no part thrown away, and everything preserved expertly to make sure it doesn't go bad, as in the khweya, a breakfast dish of leftover oven-baked Arabic bread with cinnamon and sugar soaked in warm milk before serving. As we dine, Haya and Rania share their own stories about these dishes, different iterations of the same comfort food they ate across different parts of the country. These are their shared memories, not in consciousness, but in heritage. And while the baked goods take centre stage, there's a substantial breakfast menu and lunch and dinner on offer, turning this bake space into a full-service restaurant. KAVE offers simple but healthy dishes, including a bowl of pho along with freshly made roti. There's also a bundle of different workshops that take place weekly, including guitar making, embroidery lessons, meditation sessions, bottle-cutting workshops and chair cycling rides. Kokoro Handroll Bar Credit: Kokoro Dubai Dubai diners are always looking out for a unique foodie experience and the coolest one is in the heart of Alserkal Avenue. Kokoro Handroll Bar is Dubai's first handroll bar promising sushi lovers something different. The restaurant gets busy quickly, so make sure you head down during non-peak dining hours to avoid a long wait. Open Sun-Wed noon-11.30pm; Thu-Sat noon-midnight. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz @ Lila Molino + Cafe If you're craving authentic Mexican food, head to Lila Molino + Café in Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz. This cosy spot offers traditional Mexican comfort food, from homemade tortillas made with corn sourced from Mexico to favourites like queso fundido, seared steak tortas, and crispy chicken gringas. Don't miss the green enchiladas suizas, smothered in creamy sauce and cheese, or the occasional brisket enchiladas special. Ganache Chocolatier The gorgeous Alserkal spot is not only aesthetic, but it's a chocolate-lover's dream. Here, you can order everything from decadent hot chocolate coming out of dispensers to the ever-popular viral chocolate kunafa crepes that are taking social media by storm. But that's not all—this sweet spot also serves up chocolate-dipped popsicles, velvety chocolate rocks, cascading chocolate fountains, and even rich fondue for dipping your favourite goodies into. Pekoe Tea & Bread Bar Credit: Pekoe Tea & Bread Bar A modern Japanese bakery, Pekoe is a top shout if you're after a chilled-out weekend morning in Dubai. Nestled away in the hip Alserkal Avenue, this cute spot is impressing diners with its slick interiors and joy-bringing baked goods. Project Chaiwala Credit: Project Chaiwala Like karak? You will love Project Chaiwala. This homegrown tea shop is tucked away in the independent film hub Cinema Akil. Using ethically sourced ingredients from organic tea gardens, its menu draws inspiration from around the world – from karak spots in Bur Dubai to the spices in Delhi markets. Originally a coffee roastery, it's become famous for its exceptional cold brews. The industrial, dark interior creates a unique vibe, with a central bar dedicated to its signature cold-brew taps. Ayyam Gallery The first gallery to arrive at Alserkal Avenue, Ayyam first opened in 2007 and has been showcasing contemporary pieces ever since. Leila Heller Gallery With galleries both in New York and Dubai, Leila Heller has been showcasing some incredible works for over 40 years. Fiker Institute The incredible library is quite a sight and well worth a visit. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, Karve The transformer Pilates club all the way from London has now opened its first studio in Dubai where you can 'get karved'. KRANK This Al Quoz studio is known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to a spin class (they've even hosted one on the DXB runway), so expect to push yourself at one of the sessions.
