JOY! FM wins KDHX auction with $8.75 million bid

ST. LOUIS — Christian radio station 99.1 JOY FM is one step closer to owning KDHX, the 88.1 FM radio station, after offering a winning bid at an auction for the station on Friday. According to our partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, JOY! FM topped Christian music network K-LOVE with an $8.75 million offer, beating out K-LOVE's $8.5 million bid. JOY! FM's bid won the right to buy KDHX's license, broadcast tower, and other assets after the radio station filed for bankruptcy two months ago. Big Give Back initiative turns parking lot into lifeline for tornado victims The offer for KDHX also includes an agreement to fund the station's transition to a high-definition radio station and an internet station, allowing the station to play its traditional styles of music. The Post-Dispatch reports that no other groups participated in the auction, including a coalition of former DJs and station supporters who would like to see KDHX remain over the airwaves under different management. In March, KDHX filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, which stemmed from a period when the radio station lost 24 of its 80 volunteer disc jockeys in September 2023 due to firings or walkouts, impacting its revenue. A final hearing will take place on June 9 for a bankruptcy judge to determine whether to allow the sale. If the sale goes through without any objections from other interested parties, it may be closed within six months. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. KDHX supporters make plea to stop sale of station; JOY! FM joins bidding war

ST. LOUIS — On Wednesday morning, a court hearing took place regarding the sale of KDHX to Gateway Creative Broadcasting Inc., which owns two Christian networks, K-LOVE Inc. and JOY! FM. More than a dozen listeners and former volunteers for KDHX sent a request to a federal bankruptcy judge in an attempt to stop the sale of KDHX to K-LOVE Inc. ahead of Wednesday's hearing that could approve the final sale. In early April, KDHX, the 88.1 FM radio station, began broadcasting for a Christian network, K-LOVE, Inc., following the station's bankruptcy. Last month, the community radio station announced it had sold its FCC license and broadcast tower in an agreement signed with K-LOVE Inc. FM, filed a motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Monday offering to buy KDHX's assets for $5.5 million, which is over a million more than what K-LOVE initially offered. In March, K-LOVE agreed with KDHX to buy the assets for $4.35 million. The Post-Dispatch reports the price would increase to $4.85 million if the sale could be completed in less than 6 months and decrease to $4.6 million if it could be done in six months to one year. In a filing on Monday, Gateway said it had first offered to purchase the KDHX license and assets for the $5.5 million back in December. The letter of intent from December also included a $400,000 loan so the station could continue broadcasting until the sale was complete. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. 'Careful thought was given to the decision to sell assets, and many factors were considered,' the corporation stated. 'Double Helix was able to negotiate an offer that exceeds expected market value at a time when the value of broadcast licenses is declining.' On March 11, KDHX filed for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy, which stemmed from a period when the radio station lost 24 of its 80 volunteer disc jockeys in September 2023 due to firings or walkouts, impacting its revenue. Despite the decision to sell the license, Double Helix reassured that KDHX will continue. '(This decision) is a transformation that allows us to continue our mission in new and sustainable ways,' the corporation shared. 'While we don't yet know all the ways we will do that, we look forward to a time of gathering input from volunteers, listeners, content creators and industry leaders to help shape this future.' The corporation also noted that this transition allows the opportunity to reinvest in innovative programming, expand its digital presence, and foster community engagement. 'While the medium may change, our mission remains the same—to build community through media, driven by the voices, stories and creativity of those we serve,' Double Helix concluded. Community rallies to ‘Save KDHX' as battle over station's future heats up

ST. LOUIS – The battle over the future of the community radio station, KDHX is intensifying. Just days after a St. Louis judge ordered the station to restore voting rights to some dismissed volunteers, the community protested outside of the radio station. Emotions ran high as former employees, board members, and community members rallied outside of KDHX, hoping to save their beloved radio station. They want new leadership to take over to prevent KDHX from going bankrupt. Supporters filled the street outside the station saturday, waving signs that read 'Save KDHX', as drivers honked in solidarity The group chanted for two hours, determined to make their voices heard. 'We are out here today because this is a treasured community institution that we are terrified we are going to lose,' said Courtney Dowdall, KDHX Associate Election Board Member. For many, KDHX was a hub for local musicians, artists, and businesses. Among those at the rally were longtime DJs, some of whom left in protest last year, and new hosts who stepped in to fill the vacancies. 'The current leadership has just let us down, so it's time for them to step down and let new leadership take hold,' said Caron House, former KDHX Radio Host. 'They shouldn't be able to walk outside of Saint Louis and not feel a deep sense of shame because this is not their station! This is our station,' said Andy J, KDHX DJ. ' We have a lot of community supporters as well! Lots of listeners here. Lots of people who were involved in the music industry know what a huge loss this would be if we didn't have this in Saint Louis,' said Dowdall. The rally was organized by L.O.V.E. of KDHX, a group raising funds to fight for the station's future. Their GoFund Me has now surpassed $35,000 of its $50,000 goal. 'People want us to be able to build a new board and build new leadership and revive KDHX to what it used to be' said House. A former host emphasized that KDHX has been a community staple for 38 years — and they will not stop fighting to save it. Fox 2 reached out to KDHX's Executive Board for comment, and we are still awaiting a response. Click here if you would like to support the L.O.V.E. of KDHX group in their efforts to save KDHX.
