Popular power ratings system has MSU as one of most improved teams in country
One of the most popular power rating systems anticipates Michigan State to be one of the most improved teams in all of college football this season.
Kelley Ford -- who is behind the popular KFord Ratings -- has released a number of his preseason ratings and rankings for the upcoming season -- one of which is a breakdown of his most improved teams. Ford included a complete breakdown of the teams that experienced the biggest jumps and declines from their ratings at the end of last season to the start of this season, and the Spartans were considered one of the teams with the highest improvement.
Per Ford's rating system, Michigan State has the No. 4 highest improvement of all 136 teams in college football and the highest mark of any Big Ten team. The Spartans have a 7.0 points per game upgrade in Ford's rating system, which is only behind Southern Miss (12.7 points), Florida State (9.1 points) and Tulsa (7.6 points).

Ultimately, this rating is suggesting Michigan State to be 7.0 points better per game compared to last year's team. That would mean, in theory, that if Michigan State was a seven point underdog in a game last year, they would then be even against that same team this year. That's a pretty notable upgrade and improvement from one year to the next.
Michigan State is set to kick off the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan -- who is expected to be slightly worse than last year's team with a downgrade of 2.3 points per game. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with the game set to be televised on FS1.
