NASA monitoring trio of house-sized asteroids skimming Earth at hypersonic speed
This week, five asteroids will fly past Earth, close enough to be categorized as Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs). However, NASA predicts that none will pose any real risk to the planet for another hundred years. Known as "Potentially Hazardous Asteroids" (PHAs), these pieces of cosmic debris come within 4.6 million miles of the planet. There are over 1,400 PHAs in our system as of early 2013, with diameters ranging from 460 feet. Today, May 26, asteroid "2025 KT1" will miss Earth by 1,240,681 miles. And four more are coming this week, about the size of a house. Last Thursday, '2025 KH' flew past Earth with a diameter of 37 feet at 25,000 miles per hour, just 687,000 miles away. Though an impressive distance, on NASA's map, it's 'just next door.' "2025 KT1" will pass Earth at about double that distance today with a diameter of 42.1 feet. Tomorrow, May 27, "2025 JP" is scheduled to fly by 3,190,383 miles away from Planet Earth with a diameter of 83.1 feet. On May 28, three asteroids will burn past our planet: 2025 KW, 2025 JR, and 2025 KU1. Asteroids pass Earth all the time. Unless they come within a certain distance, however, they don't signal NASA's radar as potentially threatening. According to USA Today, NASA's survey telescopes find over 3,000 near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) every year. According to Newsweek, NASA spotted the closest PHA with a scheduled flyby in 2032. With a diameter of 200 feet, or the height of a 15-story building, 2024 YR4 had the highest impact probability that NASA had ever recorded of this size or larger back in February of this year. However, it went from a 3.1 percent to a .004 percent chance. No significant asteroid risks are heading to Earth for the next century. There's still a slight chance that YR 2024 will impact the Moon. The Chicxulub impactor, at 6.2 miles in diameter, hit Earth at 40,000 mph and killed the dinosaurs with the energy of three billion WWII-era atomic bombs, CNN reported. An asteroid that large, over 330 feet in diameter, strikes Earth about every 10,000 years, according to NASA's predictions via USA Today. Ceres is currently the largest asteroid in our system, with a radius of 296 miles. In the grand scheme of things, if the Earth were the size of a nickel, Ceres would be about the size of a poppy seed. So, asteroids constitute a significant part of our solar system and come in all shapes and sizes. According to NASA's website, asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the sun. When our solar system began 4.6 billion years ago, most of the material fell to the center of a collapsed big cloud of gas and dust, forming the sun. Asteroid bodies have always been present and will always be an integral moving part of our cosmic lives. However, they can come too close at times, especially this week. Still, NASA doesn't foresee any asteroid body flying by within a truly threatening distance anytime in the next century. "But tiny meteors burn up in Earth's atmosphere all the time!" NASA explained.

Teenager charged with Kansas City murder of Irish chef Shaun Brady to stand juvenile trial
The teenager charged with the murder of Irish chef Shaun Brady in Kansas City last August is to stand trial as a juvenile in a trial that has been scheduled for September. Jennifer Phillips, a Jackson County Family Court administrative judge in the state of Missouri, has denied a request to move the case against the defendant, who was 15 years old when charged and has been identified in court by his initials, KH, from the family court and into the general court system, where he would face charges as an adult. The defendant is to remain in detention until and during the trial, set for September 23rd. The Kansas City Star reported that the judge heard testimony which outlined details of the youth's childhood as one defined by violence and a childhood cancer diagnosis. She also listened to an attorney for the Office of the Juvenile Officer present the violence which led to the fatal shooting of Mr Brady outside the restaurant in which he worked and co-owned. READ MORE Members of Mr Brady's family, including his wife Kate, were in court in April for a hearing as a video was shown in which a number of teenagers, including the accused, arrived at the restaurant in a car that, it was later confirmed, had been stolen. They attempted to break into a Hyundai car belonging to Mr. Brady, who interrupted the theft. A Kansas court report described how Mr Brady had kicked at the stolen car as it departed the scene. The vehicle then stopped and in the video, one of the occupants exits the car and shoots at the Irish man. Seven shell casings were recovered at the scene. The murder, which occurred just days before the Kansas annual Irish Fest, in which Mr Brady was involved, caused general shock. At that April hearing, the father of the teenager argued that his son should be tried a juvenile. 'Development goes a long way in life, and he hasn't gotten that far,' he said. The teenager stands charged with counts of second-degree murder, attempted stealing of a vehicle and armed criminal action. Two teenagers were originally arrested after the murder; one was later released without charge. A decision was taken not to reopen the popular Brady and Fox restaurant after Mr Brady's death.

Teen who fatally shot Irish chef had gun aged 10, court hears
A teenage boy charged with murder in the fatal shooting of an Irish chef in the US began carrying a gun when he was 10 years old, a court has heard. The teenager, now 15, who has only been identified in US courts by his initials KH due to his age, will find out in the coming weeks if he is to be tried as an adult for the murder of Shaun Brady. Mr Brady, a chef from Nenagh, Co Tipperary, was shot and killed outside his restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri, in August 2024. The married father-of-two, who owned and co-managed the Brady and Fox Restaurant and Lounge, was reportedly trying to stop a car break-in when he was shot. Police said they responded to a report of a shooting in a car park next to several businesses in late August on 63rd and Rockhill in Kansas City, Missouri, where Mr Brady's Irish restaurant was located. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brady's KC (@bradyskansascity) Officers said that from their initial inquiries, Mr Brady was taking out rubbish when he saw several people beside a vehicle in the car park. After an interaction with them, Mr Brady was shot. Two teenage boys, both under 18, were arrested in connection with the shooting. Prosecutors in the US have argued that the crime was too violent for juvenile court. However, defence lawyers have described how the teenager was forced into a life of crime since he was 10 in order to feed himself. The court heard that KH had been exposed to violent crime from a young age and had survived cancer three times before he turned 10. He had also experienced abuse, homelessness and drug use in his short life. Irish chef Shaun Brady Pic: GoFundMe '15 is a young age, but why would you take a gun and then try and steal a car, there's no excuse,' said David Grace, a friend of Mr Brady's, speaking outside the court on Tuesday. Mr Grace added: 'I'm compassionate for people who are underserved by society – I am. But I do draw the line when you take a gun to steal a car. It doesn't excuse the act. That's my case.' The judge said she will issue her decision on whether KH will be tried as an adult by May 14. KH's father has since hit out at the US justice system and claimed that the juvenile system 'overlooked' his son. Speaking to local station KCUR, the father of the boys said that his younger son's mental health issues had been overlooked and that his previous run-ins with the law had not resulted in him being treated properly by the juvenile system.
