Severe storms possible throughout the South

Severe storms possible throughout the South (NewsNation) — Thunderstorms and other severe weather have threatened the southern parts of the U.S. for a second day. In southeastern Texas, the body of a 10-year-old girl who was swept away by rising floodwaters on Monday was found Tuesday. According to KIAH, a NewsNation affiliate in Houston, more severe storms will continue into Tuesday. Storm systems brought hail to other states across the southern half of the U.S., from New Mexico to West Virginia and Florida. Storms could also impact some states in the Northeast. Hurricane season is just a month away. Are you prepared? There is currently a slow-moving weather system in the South and Northeast called an 'omega block pattern' because it is taking the shape of the Greek letter omega. The jet stream coming from Canada has not picked up the storms yet and likely won't until later in the week. A tornado watch was issued in parts of southeastern and central Texas, and the northern part of the state is under a severe thunderstorm watch. Significant flooding is also expected in Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico. The severe weather has also impacted Oklahoma City, where the state experienced its wettest April on record with an average of 8 1/2 inches of rain. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
