Khelo India Youth Games 2025: Shourya Ambure's winning return to Patna comes with greater maturity and Asian medal

Shourya Ambure is just 15 but already knows a thing or two about the right amount of effort to exert in competition. In a reflection of her maturity in accepting coach Ajit Kulkarni's recommendation of not stretching herself in the quest of a Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) record, she did enough to win 100m hurdles gold on Monday. At the end of what has been a long season for Shourya Ambure, she scored a facile victory in the final on the opening day of athletics competitions in KIYG 2025 in Bihar. She loved returning to the Patliputra Sports Complex where she had first drawn national attention by winning the crown in the National Youth Championships in March. 'At that time, my Board exams were on, and I skipped two papers to take part in the Nationals because it was a qualification event for the Asian Championship. I hadn't done much training back then, but I believed I could do better,' she recalled of her last visit to Patna when she won gold in a time of 14.55 seconds. Between the two signposts that she marked in Patna in the span of two months, 15-year-old Shourya made the nation proud at the Asian Youth Championship in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, where she clocked a personal best time of 13.80 seconds and won a bronze medal. She did not push herself in search of another personal best on Monday. Making her KIYG debut, she recorded a time of 14.33 seconds in the heats. Having felt a tightening of the hamstring and got a massage before the final, she secured gold in in 14.11 seconds, well clear of Sonali Das (West Bengal) and Vishnu Shree NS (Kerala). 'I wanted to do better but I'm happy with my performance. I clocked a decent time tonight. I'm only 15 and have a lot of time in the U18 to break the National Youth Record,' she said referring to the 13.70-second mark set by Tamil Nadu's PM Thabitha back in 2019. 'My coach, who has been guiding me for 10 years, told me to just run and enjoy the race.' Shourya Ambure is the product of a long-term vision that coach Ajit Kulkarni and her parents Rupali and Avinash Ambure, IPS officers holding high ranks in Maharashtra Police, have shared. 'I started competing in the 80m hurdles in U14 category and continued the same until under-16. I was used to running 80-meter hurdle races. This was only my fourth race in the 100m Hurdles. Now, my goal is to win medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games and Youth Asian Games,' Shourya Ambure said.

With six world records to her name, Himachal's pride Nidhi Dogra lauds Asmita League for yoga's upliftment

Gaya (Bihar) [India], May 11 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh's Nidhi Dogra is ready to showcase her talent in Yogasana at Khelo India Youth Games 2025 (KIYG). She is the only player to represent HP in Yogasana at the KIYG. Nidhi has been playing in the Khelo Asmita League for the last two years and has created six world records, and now she wants to have a big haul in KIYG 2025. Nidhi Dogra trains at the Karm Yogshala Yogasan Sports Coaching Centre and has won medals for her school at the national level, first to do so from HP. Her father is a Yogasana teacher and she has learnt it from him, as per a press release from SAI Media. When asked why she chose Yogasana, she said: 'My father is a teacher in a government school, and I got into the sport seeing him teaching it to his students. Even today, I am trained by him, and I credit him with everything I have achieved so far. This January, I won a bronze in the SJFI Artistic event, and on the basis of that, I qualified for the KIYG.' The Khelo Asmita League is to encourage women's participation in sports. Sports Authority of India (SAI) and National Sports Federations work in tandem to facilitate women's participation across various age groups. SAI and Khelo India also help with expenses, fully or partly. It was the Central Sports Ministry which started the league to empower women and consequently their family. The Asmita league was kicked off in 2021 to encourage women's participation in sports as well as to unearth new talents from all over the country. Last year, 163 leagues were organised across 12 sporting events, and more than 17,000 athletes participated. Talking about her Asmita League experience, Nidhi said: 'I have gained a lot of experience from playing in the Asmita league. I have been participating in it for the last two years. In the last Asmita League, I missed out on a medal because of bad health. Now I am participating in the KIYG for the first time. Being part of the Khelo India scheme, I have been given a coach and all travel expenses by the state government.' The 16-year-old Nidhi has won the gold medal in the 2020 International Yoga Olympic Games besides being the world champion in the Artistic Yoga in 2021. She has won three bronze medals in the national Yogasan competition. She has also been the best yoga player in Himachal Pradesh. In the Asmita Khelo India, Nidhi has made six world records in the following events: Pranav Asan (47.25 minutes), Legs up the wall pose (50 minutes), head stand (1.36 minutes), maximum yogasan forms (118 in 03.24 minutes), chakrasan (27 minutes) and scorpion position (hit three targets with feet in 47 seconds). On her achievement, Nidhi said: 'These are big achievements. They encourage me to get better and better and to work harder and harder. KYIG is a big opportunity for me.' Nidhi Dogra is a class 12th student and hails from Chauri Khiyad in the district Hamirpur. She studies at the Super Magnate Senior Secondary School. When asked about her next target, she said: 'I was practising at home for four to five hours every day before coming here. My target is to win a medal for Himachal. In these games, nobody has represented or won any medals for Himachal in KIYG. I am fortunate to be here, and my dream is to win a medal.' (ANI)

Esports Joins KIYG 2025 Line-Up With BGMI, Chess, eFootball, SF6 And More

Last Updated: Esports joins Khelo India Youth Games 2025 with BGMI, Street Fighter 6, Chess, and eFootball, boosting grassroots esports in India. Esports has been added to the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) for the first time as a demonstration event featuring BGMI, Street Fighter 6, Chess, and eFootball, a development that industry experts believe will help establish it as a mainstream sport. Esports will be an official medal sport at the 2026 Asian Games, and the first-ever Olympic Esports Games is scheduled to start in 2027. Before its inclusion in KIYG 2025, hosts Bihar had organised the Bihar State Esports Open Championship and the Bihar Inter School and College Esports Championship over the past year. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Nagaland have also taken proactive steps to support and formalise grassroots esports programs. Esports competitions will be beld at the Patliputra Sports Complex on May 6 and 7, featuring popular titles such as Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Street Fighter 6, Chess, and eFootball on both mobile and console. While BGMI remains the most popular esports title in India, Chess stands out as a particularly noteworthy addition to KIYG 2025. Once considered a purely traditional sport, it has increasingly found a home in the esports world, most recently as part of the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025, which boasts a prize pool of USD 1.5 million (Rs 12.6 crore) for the title. 'The inclusion of titles like BGMI, Street Fighter 6, Chess, and eFootball in the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 signals a big step forward for grassroots esports in India," says Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and Managing Director of NODWIN Gaming. 'It's encouraging to see esports standing shoulder to shoulder with traditional sports, and the addition of Chess – bridging classical and digital strategy shows how in tune this initiative is with global trends. But this isn't just about tournaments. 'It's about creating real opportunities to discover talent from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, places that have been overlooked for too long, thus building the foundation for a future where Indian gamers don't just participate, they dominate on the world stage." Esports to make its mark at KIYG 2025 with BGMI, Street Fighter 6, Chess, eFootball

For the first time in the history of the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), esports will be stepping into the spotlight as a demonstration event. Currently taking place in Bihar from May 4 to 14, KIYG 2025 will host its esports competitions from May 6 to 7 at the Patliputra Sports Complex, featuring popular titles such as Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Street Fighter 6, Chess, and eFootball on both mobile and console. While BGMI remains the most popular esports title in India, Chess stands out as a particularly noteworthy addition to KIYG 2025. Once considered a purely traditional sport, Chess has increasingly found a home in the esports world, most recently as part of the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025, which boasts a prize pool of USD 1.5 million (Rs 12.6 crore) for the title. NODWIN Gaming, a leader in South Asia's esports and gaming ecosystem, has been one of the pioneers of this shift in India. In 2021, the company organised the Chess Super League, featuring national and international stars and also hosted Chess tournaments at DreamHack India 2024 across rapid and blitz formats. Featuring titles that span mobile, console, and strategy-based formats like chess, the esports lineup at KIYG 2025 reflects a deliberate effort to cater to diverse gaming audiences. 'The inclusion of titles like BGMI, Street Fighter 6, Chess, and eFootball in the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 signals a big step forward for grassroots esports in India. It's encouraging to see esports standing shoulder to shoulder with traditional sports, and the addition of Chess - bridging classical and digital strategy shows how in tune this initiative is with global trends," said Akshat Rathee, co-founder and managing director of NODWIN Gaming. Further underscoring the growing stature of Indian Chess in esports, S8UL, a global force in esports and gaming content, has signed Grandmasters Aravindh Chithambaram and Nihal Sarin to compete at the EWC 2025. In addition to Chess, S8UL will also field players in Street Fighter 6, as well as EAFC25, Call of Duty Warzone, Tekken 8, and Apex Legends at the prestigious tournament. Animesh Agarwal, Co-founder and CEO of S8UL, believes that the inclusion of titles like Street Fighter 6, Chess, and eFootball console in KIYG 2025 reflects a thoughtful push to diversify beyond mobile gaming and build a more well-rounded competitive ecosystem. Before its inclusion in KIYG 2025, the state of Bihar actively embraced the esports movement by organising the Bihar State Esports Open Championship and the Bihar Inter School and College Esports Championship over the past year. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Nagaland have also taken proactive steps to support and formalise grassroots esports programs. With S8UL participating in Chess and Street Fighter at the EWC 2025, India has already been making waves on the international stage in eFootball, with Pavan Kampelli winning the bronze medal at the 2024 Asian Esports Games in Bangkok. Esports will be an official medal sport at the 2026 Asian Games, and the first-ever Olympic Esports Games is scheduled to debut in 2027.
