Khelo India Youth Games 2025: Shourya Ambure's winning return to Patna comes with greater maturity and Asian medal
At the end of what has been a long season for Shourya Ambure, she scored a facile victory in the final on the opening day of athletics competitions in KIYG 2025 in Bihar. She loved returning to the Patliputra Sports Complex where she had first drawn national attention by winning the crown in the National Youth Championships in March.
'At that time, my Board exams were on, and I skipped two papers to take part in the Nationals because it was a qualification event for the Asian Championship. I hadn't done much training back then, but I believed I could do better,' she recalled of her last visit to Patna when she won gold in a time of 14.55 seconds.
Between the two signposts that she marked in Patna in the span of two months, 15-year-old Shourya made the nation proud at the Asian Youth Championship in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, where she clocked a personal best time of 13.80 seconds and won a bronze medal. She did not push herself in search of another personal best on Monday.
Making her KIYG debut, she recorded a time of 14.33 seconds in the heats. Having felt a tightening of the hamstring and got a massage before the final, she secured gold in in 14.11 seconds, well clear of Sonali Das (West Bengal) and Vishnu Shree NS (Kerala).
'I wanted to do better but I'm happy with my performance. I clocked a decent time tonight. I'm only 15 and have a lot of time in the U18 to break the National Youth Record,' she said referring to the 13.70-second mark set by Tamil Nadu's PM Thabitha back in 2019. 'My coach, who has been guiding me for 10 years, told me to just run and enjoy the race.'
Shourya Ambure is the product of a long-term vision that coach Ajit Kulkarni and her parents Rupali and Avinash Ambure, IPS officers holding high ranks in Maharashtra Police, have shared.
'I started competing in the 80m hurdles in U14 category and continued the same until under-16. I was used to running 80-meter hurdle races. This was only my fourth race in the 100m Hurdles. Now, my goal is to win medals at the Youth Commonwealth Games and Youth Asian Games,' Shourya Ambure said.

Sub-junior Boxing Nationals to be held in Greater Noida from August 7
New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) More than 700 pugilists, including 400 boys and 300 girls, will compete in the Sub-junior (U-15) National Championships to be held in Greater Noida from August 7 to 13, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) said on Tuesday. As part of BFI's broader vision to build a robust grassroots-to-elite pathway, the Sub-Junior Nationals, to be held across 15 weight categories, will serve as a crucial platform to identify young talent and prepare them for bigger competitions. The event follows the successful conduct of the men's, women's, and junior Nationals earlier this year. Haryana (girls) and Chandigarh (boys) are the defending champions. 'The Sub-Junior Nationals are where India's boxing journey truly begins," said Ajay Singh, the BFI's Interim Committee president-chairperson. 'This platform helps identify talented individuals and allows them to experience real competition early in their careers. The skills, discipline, and confidence developed here are the first building blocks of international success. This is a significant grassroots step in these young boxers' journeys, and we're sure we'll see many stars of the future in action." Boxers will compete under World Boxing technical rules, with three rounds of 1.5 minutes each, with a minute's rest in between rounds. A 10-point scoring system will be followed. Medal winners from the REC Combined Talent Hunt 2024 are also eligible, making the competition even more competitive. At the recent Asian U-15 and U-17 Championships, Indian boxers bagged 43 medals and finished second overall. Nationals, A's intent on getting on track in series opener
The Washington Nationals look to stop a five-game losing streak when they open a three-game series against the visiting Athletics on Tuesday. HT Image Washington was outscored 38-14 while it was swept by the first-place Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend and has lost 17 of its past 24 games. "We've just got to dig deep," catcher Drew Millas said of a young Nationals team that saw a group of veterans traded at the deadline. "We've got to come together as a unit and want each other to do well, want each other to win, want the best for each other." The Nationals will open the week behind someone whose name was rumored to be in trade talks: All-Star left-hander MacKenzie Gore (4-11, 3.80 ERA). He will be opposed by veteran right-hander Luis Severino (5-11, 4.83 ERA). Gore is 0-3 with a 10.66 ERA since the All-Star break. In his most recent outing, he was roughed up for six runs on eight hits - two of them home runs - in 5 1/3 innings against the Houston Astros, the day before the trade deadline. "I threw the ball much better, but homers, you don't get those back," Gore said. "Those two homers are kind of the pitches that I'm sure I'll think about for a bit. But I thought we threw the ball better than we did last time." Gore won his only previous start against the Athletics, tossing five scoreless innings last season.
