KKFD targets 50% digital forensics lab accreditation in five years
KOTA TINGGI: The Digital Forensics Workgroup (KKFD) plans to have 50% of its member agencies' digital forensics laboratories accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) within five years. Currently, only six out of 16 KKFD agencies hold the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation. Accredited agencies include the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and CyberSecurity Malaysia. KKFD chairman Wan Zulkifli Wan Jusoh stressed that accreditation ensures forensic labs meet international operational and quality standards. 'Obtaining this recognition is challenging—MACC took three years—but we aim for half of KKFD agencies to achieve it in five years,' he said during a press conference after the 2025 KKFD Law Enforcement Agency meeting. The two-day meeting involved 100 members from 16 agencies discussing cybercrime challenges and AI's role in digital investigations. Wan Zulkifli highlighted the meeting as proof of Malaysia's commitment to advancing digital forensics for combating cybercrime. KKFD, established in 2015, serves as a knowledge-sharing platform for digital investigation best practices. Post-meeting, KKFD will conduct lab visits to improve facilities and align operations with global standards. Simulated court courses and prosecutor dialogues will also be held to strengthen forensic teams' legal expertise. CyberSecurity Malaysia will compile approved forensic lab SOPs as official references for member agencies. Minimum SOP guidelines will be developed to standardise new labs and maintain national consistency. - Bernama

KKFD Aims To Accredit Half Of Digital Forensics Labs Under Its Agencies Within Five Years
KOTA TINGGI, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The Digital Forensics Workgroup (KKFD) has set a target to have half of the Digital Forensics laboratories under its agencies accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) within the next five years. Its chairman Wan Zulkifli Wan Jusoh said to date, only six out of the 16 agencies under KKFD have obtained the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation certificate from DSM. These include the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM), the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and CyberSecurity Malaysia. Wan Zulkifli added that such recognition is vital to ensure that the operation and quality management of forensic laboratories, including their standard operating procedures (SOPs), meet international standards. 'There are other laboratories currently in the process of obtaining accreditation, and this effort is included in their respective agencies' roadmaps. "Achieving this recognition is a challenge. For instance, at MACC, it took us three years. With this in mind, we aim for half of the registered agencies under KKFD to obtain accreditation within the next five years,' he told a press conference following the 2025 KKFD Law Enforcement Agency meeting here today. Also present were KKFD PKPK II deputy chairman 1, Nik Mazdie Izham Nik Mohamed, who is also JKDM's Digital Forensics laboratory head, and KKFD deputy chairman II, ACP Muhammad Zulkifly Mohd Isa, PDRM's D10 Physical Forensics laboratory head. The two-day meeting, which began yesterday and was attended by 100 members from 16 agencies, discussed challenges and opportunities in addressing increasingly complex cybercrime, including the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital investigations. Wan Zulkifli emphasised that the involvement of several agencies in the meeting reflects the country's commitment to advancing technology and digital investigations, which are critical for combating the rising tide of digital crime.
