MP: Layer poultry farming to be introduced to rural folks

KUCHING (April 30): An upcoming knowledge-sharing programme on the potential of rural cooperatives' involvement in layer poultry farming may provide valuable insights to the rural communities, particularly in relation to food security and economic opportunities. In pointing this out, Sri Aman MP Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie described the 'Program Bicara Ilmu Potensi Penglibatan Koperasi Luar Bandar Dalam Projek Ternakan Ayam Penelur' this May 9 as being crucial in introducing business opportunities through cooperatives to the rural communities, particularly those in this parliamentary constituency. 'Food security is a key priority at this time. Therefore, the knowledge to be shared by the trainers will be incredibly beneficial to those living in rural areas. 'Furthermore, by engaging in egg-laying poultry farming, we not only gain a source of meat, but can also generate income through sales of eggs in the market,' she said when met after receiving a courtesy call from Koperasi Kampung Tuba Simunjan Berhad (KKTSB) at her office in Tabuan Jaya here on Monday. Doris said this initiative should be able to contribute to the economic growth of the local communities, specifically the cooperative members. The programme is organised by the Cooperative Institute of Malaysia (IKMA) Sarawak branch in collaboration with KKTSB, and will take place at Rumah Ngumbang Santok in Kampung Tuba. It is learnt that this is the third time KKTSB is organising a skills-training session for members and villagers as part of a community project involving cooperation with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UTM) and various non-governmental organisations (NGOs). According to Doris, Kampung Tuba is one of the rural areas under her constituency, with KKTSB being the only active cooperative in Sri Aman, and one of the most successful ones in Sarawak's rural areas. 'As a show of support, I will attend the programme's launch and encourage local residents not to miss out on this opportunity to gain knowledge that can lead to an improved standard of living.' Among those present were KKTSB chairman Dr Tamoi Janggu and Rumah Ngumbang Santok tuai rumah (longhouse chieftain) Gura Empulu.
