5-Year-Old Piano Prodigy Makes His Debut at Carnegie Hall: 'Such an Amazing Time'
A 5-year-old piano prodigy just made his debut at Carnegie Hall. Alec Van Khajadourian of Los Angeles made his debut during the NY Classical Debut Awards Gala Concert on Sunday, July 20, according to ABC affiliate WABC-TV and NBC affiliate KNBC. He was the youngest person to ever perform at the event, described by Carnegie Hall as "an international competition open to musicians of all ages" in which performers are chosen by a competition jury. Khajadourian is also the youngest person to ever perform at the prestigious New York City concert venue, Pietro Molteni, founder and artistic director for the Gala Concert, told the New York Post. 'I can't wait to get on stage at Carnegie Hall and play for everyone,' Khajadourian told the Post prior to his performance. 'I'm so excited!' Joe Khajadourian and Diana Sanders, Alec's parents, discovered their son's talent when the boy was a toddler, according to KNBC. In about a year, Alec began learning complicated classical music without reading sheet music. Alec has perfect pitch, which only occurs in about 1 of every 100,000 people, according to WABC-TV. "He immediately showed some real promise,' Joe told the outlet, 'and now it's developed real fast." Now 5 years old, Alec has already won first prize in three international musical competitions, according to KNBC. Shortly before his performance at Carnegie Hall, Alec made his debut at L.A.'s Disney Concert Hall, where he met Gustavo Dudamel, director of the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra. 'I'm so excited and proud of Alec for all his hard work,' Joe told the Post. 'It's such an amazing time for him.' Molteni, the Gala Concert founder, told the Post that the team at Carnegie Hall 'immediately understood the uniqueness of the situation and accommodated it with great professionalism.' Police search for suspect who shot driver who plowed into L.A. crowd
Police are searching for the man who shot a driver accused of plowing his vehicle into a crowd outside an East Hollywood club in Los Angeles early Saturday morning. Fernando Ramirez, 29, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, force likely to produce great bodily injury, after he allegedly "intentionally" drove his car into a crowd of pedestrians gathered outside a venue at North Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard around 2 a.m. on Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department said. At least 37 people were injured as some were hit by the car and others briefly trapped beneath it, officials said. The injuries ranged from minor pain to serious fractures and lacerations. Ramirez had been fighting in the club and was kicked out of the venue, two LAPD sources told KNBC. He allegedly returned to the club and resumed fighting. After he was thrown out by security, he got into his car and drove into the crowd, the sources said. After driving the car into the crowd, Ramirez was pulled from the vehicle by bystanders and assaulted. During the ordeal, a man shot Ramirez in the lower back and then fled. Police have released photos of that shooting suspect and are asking for the public's help in identifying them. The shooting suspect is described as a male Hispanic between 5'6 and 5'7 in height, weighing between 150 and 170 pounds, last seen wearing a blue Dodgers jacket, a light blue jersey with the number "5," and blue jeans. He has gauges in both ears and a goatee as well. After he was beaten and shot, Ramirez was hospitalized and taken into surgery. He was last described as being in stable condition. Ramirez has an extensive criminal history and was on parole at the time of Saturday's crash, KNBC reported. Ramirez was previously convicted of felony battery and was sentenced in January 2020 for attacking a man outside of a Laguna Beach Whole Foods in June 2019, LAPD Captain Ben Fernandes confirmed. He was on parole at the time of the Saturday crash, but it's unclear if it's in connection with the 2019 incident or another case. Ramirez also has a pending DUI case, according to police records. The Orange County District Attorney's Office of California confirmed Ramirez had an extensive criminal history dating back to 2014, including a felony charge for assault with a deadly weapon using force likely to produce greater bodily injury — the same charge he's facing in Saturday's crash.
