Teen dies after being pinned between two cars in school parking lot, CA cops say

A 15-year-old boy died after he was pinned between two cars in the parking lot of his California private school, police say. The boy was walking in the parking lot of Campbell Hall School in the neighborhood of Studio City just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said in an email to McClatchy News. He walked between two cars waiting in the carpool line, school officials and Los Angeles police Lt. Matthew Bielski told KABC. As he made his way toward his father's car, a Rivian SUV struck him, pinning him between the two cars, police told KNBC. 'The vehicle that the student walked in between moved forward,' Bielski said at a news conference, KNBC reported. It's unclear why the SUV moved, Bielski reportedly said. The collision left the boy 'gravely injured,' a police spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said, according to the newspaper. The collision also injured two more minors and three adults, who all had non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. 'This is a very tragic situation,' LAFD Capt. Adam Vangerpen told KCAL. 'This is hard on all the witnesses who witnessed this. There's a lot of kids getting out of school and getting ready for summer.' L.A. County Supervisor Lindsay Horvath, who represents the neighborhood, said her 'heart is with the entire Campbell Hall community during this tragic time,' in a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. Campbell Hall School did not immediately respond to McClatchy News' request for comment June 5. In an email to parents obtained by KTLA, Head of School Rev. Canon Julian P. Bull said the crash left him and other school officials 'heartbroken.' 'Our collective hearts and thoughts are with the family,' he said in his email, according to KTLA. 'I know that the Campbell Hall community will be there for all of them in the challenging days and weeks ahead.' An investigation into the collision is ongoing, police said.

Police said the bodies of two people were discovered inside a tent in the Westlake district of Los Angeles on Monday, May 12 The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed one of the victims as Lucrecia Macias Barajas, a mother of six 'It devastated us,' one of Barajas' daughters said about their motherA mother of six children who went missing for several days is among the victims found dead inside a tent at a California homeless encampment, authorities said. The discovery happened on Monday, May 12, at the 1200 block of Huntley Drive near the 110 Freeway in the Westlake district of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed in an email to PEOPLE on Friday, May 16, that one of the deceased victims was Lucrecia Macias Barajas, 46. Barajas' daughters told CW affiliate KTLA that their loved one was a mother of six children and an Army veteran. 'My sister, she called to tell us that she found our mom dead,' Amely Becerra, one of Barajas's daughters, told the outlet. 'It devastated us. We didn't understand how it happened.' Barajas was reportedly missing for several days and her family was unable to reach her, per KTLA. They were able to trace Barajas's cell phone signal to the location of the tent. NBC affiliate KNBC shared footage posted on Instagram showing two of Barajas' children breaking down upon discovering their mother's body in the tent, which was reportedly locked from the inside. A GoFundMe was established on behalf of Barajas' family so they could bury their mother next to her father in Nicaragua. 'Those of you who knew Lucre know very well that she would give the food out of her mouth to make sure you had a bite to eat,' the organizer wrote in the description. They added, 'She loved wholeheartedly and was selfless, caring, loving. She left us all too soon and it is a shame to lose such a wonderful human being. Not only because she was our sister but because she was a saint to whoever got to meet her.' Residents who live in the vicinity described the encampment as a drive-through for drugs, KNBC reported, adding that neighbors have contacted the city a number of times about it but to no avail. 'I want people to know she wasn't a homeless drug addict, because that's not true,' Becerra told KTLA. 'Some people are coming to that conclusion and that's not fair. She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.' On the same day of the discovery of the two bodies, California Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a model ordinance for cities and counties 'to immediately address dangerous and unhealthy encampments' and help connect people experiencing homelessness to shelter and services. The ordinance would include banning persistent camping in one location and prohibiting encampments that block free passage on sidewalks. PEOPLE contacted the LAPD and the GoFundMe organizer for additional information on Friday. Read the original article on People

16-year-old found dead in dirt field in 2022, CA cops say. Now, there's an arrest

More than two years after a 16-year-old boy was found stabbed to death in a dirt field, an arrest has been made, California deputies say. Antonio Rodriguez, 26, was arrested April 28 in relation to the death of Robert Schmidt Jr., the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in an April 29 news release. Schmidt's mother saw him last when she dropped him off at a skate park the night before he was found dead, KTLA reported in 2022. Elizabeth Schmidt, who worked the graveyard shift and didn't learn her son was missing until the next morning, filed a missing persons report and began searching for him, she told the news outlet. 'When we were driving by, we had seen the fire department pulling up on scene and them taping it off,' the mother told KTLA. 'In that moment, I knew that that was my son.' Robert Schmidt Jr. was discovered in an Apple Valley dirt field the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, according to deputies. After finding Schmidt with 'traumatic injuries,' first-responders pronounced him dead on scene, deputies said. 'Why would you leave my son in the dirt?' Elizabeth Schmidt said in an interview with KNBC. 'You know. Why?' Robert Schmidt Jr., was a 'good kid,' who 'never got into trouble,' according to a GoFundMe set up for the family. 'Our family is completely devastated and at a loss for words,' his aunt wrote on the GoFundMe. 'We don't understand why this has happened or who would do this.' He was also 'compassionate, kind, so funny and goofy in his own way,' his obituary says. 'Anyone who knew Robert loved him and always wanted to be around him,' according to his obituary. More than two years later, following a 'tireless investigation,' detectives identified Rodriguez as a suspect in Schmidt's killing, deputies said. 'I'm so relieved we can finally say my boy has gotten justice,' his mother wrote in a Facebook post. 'We have been fighting for justice and have been so patient since 10/18/22.' She asked others to keep her family in their prayers. 'There's no more information we can provide right now but our fight isn't over yet,' she wrote. Rodriguez is being held without bail on a murder charge, deputies said. Apple Valley is about 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
