18 BJP MLAs back in Karnataka House as suspension lifted

BENGALURU: Karnataka legislative assembly speaker UT Khader Sunday revoked the suspension of 18 BJP MLAs with immediate effect, allowing them to attend monsoon session likely to be held in July. A six-month suspension had been slapped on the MLAs on March 21 -- the last day of the budget session -- for unruly behaviour and disrespecting the chair. The incident took place while the opposition members sought judicial probe into the alleged honeytrap attempt on minister KN Rajanna and other members of the House. Amid the din, the House passed contentious bills, including one seeking to provide 4% reservation to Muslims in govt civil contracts. The decision to truncate the suspension period by nearly four months came after the speaker's meeting on Sunday with chief minister Siddaramaiah , his deputy DK Shivakumar, law and parliamentary minister HK Patil, leader of the opposition in the assembly R Ashoka and others. Later, the CM met the governor at Raj Bhavan to apprise him of the decision. The speaker's secretariat stated the revocation follows apology and undertaking by the suspended legislators that they will adhere to parliamentary ethics and discipline in future sessions. The decision was also prompted by a letter to the speaker from Ashoka. In the interim, the suspended MLAs approached the governor, seeking intervention to revoke their suspension.

Suspension revoked, 18 BJP MLAs to return to assembly

Bengaluru: Legislative assembly speaker UT Khader Sunday revoked the suspension of 18 BJP MLAs with immediate effect, allowing the legislators to attend the monsoon session likely to be held in July. A six-month suspension had been slapped on the MLAs on March 21 -- the last day of the budget session -- for unruly behaviour and disrespecting the chair. The incident took place while the opposition members sought judicial probe into the alleged honeytrap attempt on minister KN Rajanna and 42 members of the house. Amid the din, the House passed contentious bills, including one seeking to provide 4% reservation to Muslims in govt civil contracts. The decision to truncate the suspension period by nearly four months came after the assembly speaker's meeting with chief minister Siddaramaiah , his deputy DK Shivakumar, law and parliamentary minister HK Patil, leader of the opposition in the assembly R Ashoka and others here on Sunday. In the interim, the suspended MLAs had approached the governor, seeking intervention to revoke their suspension. The governor had written to the Speaker, who took the decision "considering all the developments and with the intent of upholding the best practices of parliamentary system". The suspension had barred the legislators from entering the assembly premises and attending meetings of standing committees. In an extreme response, BJP boycotted all standing committee meetings, as a result of which significant panels such as Public Accounts Committee virtually came to a standstill. There were instances of the suspended MLAs prevented from attending meetings of the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) in some districts, though the suspension order didn't suggest this. "The unprecedented suspension impinged on the privilege of elected members," said Ashwath Narayan, welcoming the suspension-revocation order that is in line with the spirit of the Constitution.

Karnataka Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna retires from electoral politics, urges youth to lead

MYSURU: Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna on Tuesday announced retirement from electoral politics, and will not contest the new Assembly elections. However, he will continue in active politics. Rajanna said he is 75-years-old now, and would have turned 78 during the polls in 2028. 'Even if I contest and win the election, it would be difficult to deliver due to my advanced age,' he added. He said it is high time that the youth are encouraged to enter politics. Disputing the BJP's criticism against the Congress government celebrating two years in office, he said the BJP is opposing it for being an Opposition party, and does not deserve a reaction. Asked about delay in releasing Gruha Lakshmi funds, he maintained that the fund release was delayed due to change in the app during January and February, and claimed that the government has transferred money to the accounts of the beneficiaries. When told about KPCC working president Tanveer Sait hinting at some ministers being dropped from the cabinet, he said, 'Sait will not decide on cabinet reshuffle or dropping ministers. It is for the high command to decide.'
