Karnataka Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna retires from electoral politics, urges youth to lead

MYSURU: Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna on Tuesday announced retirement from electoral politics, and will not contest the new Assembly elections. However, he will continue in active politics.
Rajanna said he is 75-years-old now, and would have turned 78 during the polls in 2028. 'Even if I contest and win the election, it would be difficult to deliver due to my advanced age,' he added.
He said it is high time that the youth are encouraged to enter politics. Disputing the BJP's criticism against the Congress government celebrating two years in office, he said the BJP is opposing it for being an Opposition party, and does not deserve a reaction.
Asked about delay in releasing Gruha Lakshmi funds, he maintained that the fund release was delayed due to change in the app during January and February, and claimed that the government has transferred money to the accounts of the beneficiaries.
When told about KPCC working president Tanveer Sait hinting at some ministers being dropped from the cabinet, he said, 'Sait will not decide on cabinet reshuffle or dropping ministers. It is for the high command to decide.'

Tripura BJP treads cautiously as TIPRA Motha wing threatens statewide shutdown over ‘insult' to Pradyot Kishore

Tripura's ruling BJP on Thursday appeared to play down ally TIPRA Motha's claims that its founder had been insulted by the Gomati district magistrate by refusing to meet him, and accused the Opposition CPM and Congress of trying to win brownie points out of the issue. BJP state spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty said, 'The Congress and CPM are trying to give political colours to a recent undesirable incident between Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and Gomati district magistrate and are trying to gain brownie points over the issue. They are making self-contradictory statements and trying to confuse people to malign the state government on social media.' Chakraborty's comments came as a surprise as tension between the BJP and TIPRA Motha was rather high in the last few days, especially during the shutdown observed by the Youth TIPRA Federation (YTF), the tribal party's youth wing, in Gomati district against the alleged insult to Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and Tripura ADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia. The YTF observed the shutdown on June 2 and kept the Gomati district magistrate's office locked, drawing criticism from the CPM and Congress as the Motha's protest took place amid a prevailing flood situation. Chakraborty's comments also came a day after the YTF threatened to scale up protests. 'If no action is taken against the DM, we will launch a statewide agitation next week. We will announce details of our agitation ahead of launching it,' YTF President Suraj Debbarma told reporters on Wednesday. Political observers had assumed the BJP would take a stern stand, especially since it doesn't need TIPRA Motha to maintain the majority in the Assembly. The party has 33 MLAs in the 60-member House. TIPRA Motha, which has 13 MLAs, had served as the principal Opposition party for nearly a year since the 2023 Assembly elections, after which it switched sides and joined the state government. Chakraborty singled out Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and a 'few others' and said Chief Minister Manik Saha had already asked the chief secretary to investigate the Gomati issue. He further said the chief minister would talk to Pradyot once he returned to the state. The BJP spokesperson said the saffron party, TIPRA Motha and the IPFT were committed to working collectively for the state's development. He condemned what he said were online attempts to create communal sentiments. Stating that the BJP-led state government is working with people from all communities, religious groups, and sects, Chakraborty urged the people to 'stay cautious' about provocateurs. Asked about the YTF's agitations, Chakraborty said the association was free to protest, but urged everyone to keep faith in the chief minister. His comments are considered crucial in the aftermath of the YTF agitation which took place after a 96-hour deadline for the government to take action against the Gomati district magistrate expired. A large number of netizens criticised the YTF agitation that took place while thousands have sheltered in relief camps. Many others supported the right to protest. CPM MLA Chaudhury, who criticised the Gomati district magistrate's refusal to meet Pradyot, also termed the YTF action of locking up the office undemocratic and illegal. 'People suffered a lot due to the agitation…,' he said.

Tejashwi writes to Bihar CM demanding 85% reservation for all deprived classes

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday (June 5, 2025) demanded 85% reservation for all deprived classes in Bihar. In the two-page letter to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, he demanded that a special session of the Assembly be convened to pass a Bill providing 85% reservation for all deprived classes. A proposal to include it in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution should then be sent to the Central government within three weeks, he said. (The laws included in the Ninth Schedule cannot be challenged in courts) Also read: Can Bihar increase its reservation pool? | Explained Mr. Yadav who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said that if these steps are not taken, the RJD will launch a massive mass movement across the State. The RJD leader reminded Mr. Kumar that he formed the government with the help of his party in August 2022 and due to his efforts, the work of caste-based census was completed in Bihar in 2023 by the Mahagathbandhan government. Following the caste-based survey report, the State government had taken the decision to increase the reservation for the Backward Classes (BCs), the Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs) and the Scheduled Tribes (STs) from the existing 50% to 65%. Together with the 10% Economically Backward Class (EWS) quota, the Bill pushed the reservation in Bihar to 75%. Editorial | Equality and identity: On the findings of the Bihar caste count However, on June 20, 2024, the Patna High Court set aside the amendments passed by the Bihar Assembly to increase the reservation in educational institutions and government jobs. The High Court had said that this violated the 50% limit set by the Supreme Court. 'Historic move' 'That historic decision of the Mahagathbandhan government ensured that the people of Dalit-tribal, backward and extremely backward as well as economically weaker sections get the benefit of increased reservation. However, this law was set aside by the Patna High Court, saying that the reservation limit has been increased by limit has been increased without conducting a study of the representation of the people of these castes in government jobs and educational institutions of the State,' Mr. Yadav said in the letter. Also read | Limit and excess: On the Patna High Court judgment and enhanced reservation The former Deputy Chief Minister pointed out that, on the same lines, people of Tamil Nadu had been getting 69% reservation for the last 35 years. All-party committee He added, 'In this situation, it is now very important that the government constitutes an all-party committee after conducting a proper study and submits its report within a week. In light of the study done by the all-party committee, a one-day special session of the Bihar Legislative Assembly should be called and a new Bill providing for a total 85% reservation should be passed. A recommendation should be made to the Central government to include it in the Ninth Schedule.' He said that by doing so (including in the Ninth Schedule), the 'anti-reservation elements' and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government will not get a chance to cancel it again through various means. He asked whether the NDA government wanted the current limit of reservation for the deprived classes to be increased to 85% or not. 'If you do not do this, then it will be understood that you and your government are deliberately avoiding this matter. The backward Dalit and tribal candidates are losing lakhs of jobs in the appointment process, which is a mockery of the concept of reservation and equality and the objectives of that Bill,' Mr. Yadav said.
