Jennifer Aniston Reflects on Matthew Perry's Passing, Says She's ‘Glad' He's ‘Out of That Pain'

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Jennifer Aniston reflected on the loss of her friend and former co-star Matthew Perry, who suddenly passed away in 2023 at age 54. "We did everything we could when we could," said Aniston of her former Friends co-star, who battled alcohol and drug addiction throughout his life. "But it almost felt like we'd been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight. As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there's a part of me that thinks this is better. I'm glad he's out of that pain." The toxicology report following Perry's death found that his cause of death was attributed to the acute effects of ketamine, drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine, a drug used to treat opioid use disorder. He was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home on October 28, 2023. His former Friends castmates released a statement after his death and said they were "utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew." Several people were arrested for their involvement in his death, including the people who helped him get ketamine, a doctor who worked with Perry, and his live-in assistant. Last year, Aniston sat down for an interview with Quinta Brunson for an episode of Variety's Actors on Actors series. The chat took an emotional turn after a Variety producer requested Brunson ask Aniston what it's like to revisit Friends following the loss of Perry. 'Oh, God, don't make me cry,' said Aniston before Brunson could ask the question. 'I won't. We won't make each other cry,' Brunson replied. 'No, no, sorry, I just started thinking about—' said Aniston. 'No, I'm okay. It's happy tears." She noted that she remains close with all of her former co-stars, and said that they're all "family forever." After his death, she eulogized him in a touching post on Instagram. "Matty, I love you so much and I know you are now completely at peace and out of any pain," she wrote. "I talk to you every day… sometimes I can almost hear you saying 'could you BE any crazier?' Rest little brother. You always made my day." Courtney Cox—who portrayed the wife of Perry's character, Chandler, on the show—said last year that she still feels his presence after his death because of how closely they worked together for so long.
