Hyderabad: Two men posing as naxalites were arrested by Jeedimetla police on Wednesday after a failed extortion bid. On May 22, police received a complaint from K Raghavender Goud and his father Ravinder Goud alleging that they found a letter in front of their house by "Maoists" who threatened to kill them unless they paid up Rs 50 lakh. Cops verified CCTVs in the area and traced the two suspects with previous criminal history in AP. On being grilled, the two confessed they posed as naxalites to extort businessmen to tide over financial problems. When the father and son did not respond to threats, the accused had gone to Vizianagaram to get crude bombs to target them.

Cong dharna on May 26 to demand Sarna Code

Ranchi: The state unit of the Congress party will stage a daylong dharna outside Raj Bhavan on May 26 to press for Sarna Code , it announced on Thursday. K Raju, the party's in-charge for Jharkhand affairs, along with state party president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, said Sarna code will give the tribal communities of Jharkhand a separate religious identity. "The Union govt must include a column for the Sarna religion in the upcoming census. We will continue to fight for this until the Sarna code is granted," Raju said while addressing the media here. Ahead of the proposed nationwide caste census , the Grand Old party has been demanding the Narendra Modi govt at the Centre to include a separate column for Sarna code and is accusing it of deliberately ignoring the long-standing demands of the tribals. Kamlesh mentioned that on November 11, 2020, the coalition govt led by Hemant Soren had convened a special session and passed a proposal for the Sarna code, which was sent to the central govt, but no action has been taken yet. "In the upcoming census, one more column has been reduced. Previously there were seven columns, now it has been reduced to six. Every religion has its own code, so the tribals should also have theirs too," he said. Congress legislative party leader Pradeep Yadav on the other hand said that Modi govt has buckled under the press put by Congress and finally decided to conduct a caste-based census.

Two government aqua labs in Andhra's Nellore district remain underutilised

NELLORE: Two government-established aqua labs in the Nellore district, intended to assist aqua farmers with essential water, soil, feed, and disease testing, are underutilised due to widespread lack of awareness. Despite being set up to reduce farmers' reliance on expensive private labs, many continue to use private services, resulting in financial losses and substandard reports. The district is home to over 60,000 acres dedicated to prawn and fish farming spread across nine coastal mandals. In an effort to support these farmers, the government established two aqua laboratories — one at the District Fisheries office and the other in Kavali. The district office lab, set up in 1997 with a Rs 30 lakh investment, functioned well initially but stopped operations due to departmental negligence. It was only revived in 2023. The Kavali lab, established in 2020 with Rs 27 lakh, remains underutilised. 'There are over 16 private aqua labs in the district, and we have no choice but to rely on them,' said K Raju, a farmer from Kovur. He expressed frustration over the lack of communication from officials regarding the existence of the government labs, forcing farmers to pay exorbitant fees. From 2020 to the present, the Nellore lab has conducted only 12,926 tests, while the Kavali lab has conducted just 155 tests. Farmers allege that the Fisheries Department has failed to inform them about these facilities, leading to their continued dependence on costly private labs. An official from the Fisheries Department assured that plans are underway to increase outreach, including direct visits by officials to collect samples from farmers. 'We will take special initiatives to improve service delivery,' said the official.

Replicate Telangana model for caste-based survey: Cong

1 2 Ranchi: Ahead of the Congress party 's " Samvidhan Bachao Abhiyan " scheduled for Tuesday, Jharkhand Congress in-charge K Raju on Monday appealed to the Union govt to adopt the ' Telangana model ' for conducting caste-based surveys across the country. Addressing the media on Monday, Raju said Congress has been demanding a caste-based survey for the last several years but met with apathy from the govt. "Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tagged those who demanded the caste survey as "Urban Naxals". Now that the Centre has agreed to conduct the caste survey, we appeal to them to adopt the Telangana model while conducting the survey. The Congress-led govt in Telangana has successfully conducted the caste survey and has emerged as a successful model," Raju said. He added that the census conducted every 10 years gave very little information about the population. "However, Telangana conducted an extensive caste survey extracting various information about the castes which later could be used for the overall development of people. So, it's our demand that the Centre follows the model and declare a timeline for the survey. They also should publish all information for the knowledge of the public," Raju said, acknowledging the importance of caste-based survey in ensuring social justice and empowerment to all. Senior Congress leaders, including AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and party general secretary K C Venugopal, former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel will join the state-wide "Samvidhan Bachao Yatra" on Tuesday. The rally will also be organised in all district within a week. Raju said during the rally, the party would raise three demands. "First will be on withdrawing the arbitrary 50% ceiling on reservation, so that reservation can be granted based on population. We will inform the people about the importance of removing the ceiling during the rally. Second and most importantly, the declining monetary allocation in the Union budget for the SC and ST in the last 11 years will also be highlighted. The third focus will be on the issue of reservation of seats in private institutes for SC and ST students," Raju said. After the rally, an executive committee meeting of the state Congress unit will be convened in Ranchi, where the AICC president and other senior party leaders will be present. In the meeting, many important decisions for the party would be taken, Raju added.
