Overjoyed dad runs out of house after winning $5.4M lottery

The Brief A dad in Michigan ran out of the house out of sheer joy after realizing he had won the lottery. He matched the winning numbers that would make his family up to $5.4 million richer. The dad, who asked to remain anonymous, said he will use the money to help the family. VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (KTTV) - A wife and daughter turned to look at each other in confusion after dad ran out of their home and down the street. Turns out, their old man may have just made the family up to $5.4 million richer by winning the lottery! The backstory According to the Michigan Lottery, a 43-year-old man from Van Buren County found out he had won a winning lottery ticket worth about $5.46 million. The new left him feeling so excited that he made a beeline out of the family's home and ran down parts of the neighborhood. Meanwhile, back at the house, his wife was confused. "My wife didn't know what was going on, so my daughter said to her: 'I think dad just won the Lottery!' Winning a prize like this feels unreal and is still sinking in," the Michigan dad said, who asked to be anonymous in the Michigan Lottery website. He told lottery officials he bought it at a Speedway gas station on a whim. "When I saw the jackpot was over $5 million, I told my family: 'That money is going to be mine!'" he said. The dad told lottery officials that he will use the money on helping the family. There are millions of reasons to dream, especially what you would do with the jackpot money. However, one thing all lottery winners have to take into account is the fact that their prizes will be taxed. So how much do you really get after taxes? It depends on a couple of factors: do you have to pay state taxes where you live? Will you take the lump sum payment or the annuity payout? According to Mega Millions' website, those electing to take the annuity option get one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments. Powerball follows an identical process for paying out its jackpot winners. RELATED:Powerball payout calculator: How much would you get after taxes if you won? Driver for Amazon caught on camera pooping, peeing outside homes in California

A driver making Amazon deliveries caught on video relieving herself outside the homes of two Los Angeles-area customers will no longer work for the company, Amazon said. Tamara Bedoy told KTTV that her husband discovered the driver had pooped on the front porch of their Woodland Hills home when he went out to pick up a package on Mother's Day. Home security video shows the driver walking away pulling up her pants, leaving a pile of feces on the porch, KTLA reported. A video sent to the station by another family a short distance away also shows the driver urinating on a brick walkway inside a wooden gate, KTLA said. 'It's really gross and then to find out a little bit later that she did it again about 30 minutes after she left my house, she went to someone else's house, then did the same thing. That's malicious, personal, disgusting,' Bedoy told KTTV. Amazon apologized for the incidents in a statement sent to McClatchy News and said the driver was an independent contractor. 'We're deeply disturbed by the unacceptable behavior of this delivery driver and apologize to the customers involved,' Amazon spokesman Richard Rocha said in the statement. 'We immediately identified the driver and they are no longer delivering on behalf of Amazon,' he said. Woodland Hills is about a 25-mile drive northwest from downtown Los Angeles.

Burglars tunnel through wall to steal $10m in goods from LA jewelry store

Burglars tunneled through a concrete wall to gain access to a Los Angeles jewelry store, making off with at least $10m worth of watches, pendants, gold chains and other merchandise, police said. The heist happened around 9.30pm on Sunday at Love Jewels on Broadway in the heart of downtown, according to officer David Cuellar with the LA police department. Investigators were reviewing security camera footage that shows the suspects entering the store from a large hole they drilled from the property next door, he said. 'They tunneled through multiple levels of concrete into the target location,' Cuellar said on Tuesday. An unknown number of suspects fled through the same hole and drove off in a late model Chevy truck, he said. The heist was not discovered until store employees arrived for work on Monday morning. Initial estimates were that about $10m worth of merchandise was stolen, Cuellar said, adding that the number could change. In an interview with local television station KTTV, the owner said the loss was upwards of $20m. In security video obtained by KTTV, the sound of a drill can be heard from inside the store. Once inside, the burglars apparently cut the cameras' wires. The TV station showed holes cut in a large safe, overturned jewel cases and an empty bottle of scotch whisky. Love Jewels's website advertises items like a 14-karat yellow gold rope chain for $1,200, heart-shaped gold earrings for $200 and a gold cross pendant for $550. Videos on the store's social media shows glass cases filled with rings, watches and necklaces. Phone calls and emails were sent to the store on Tuesday. Detectives examined the scene for fingerprints and DNA, police said.

Nurse influencer Hailey Okula dies from childbirth complications: What is an amniotic fluid embolism?

LOS ANGELES (WJW) – Hailey Okula, an influencer known as Nurse Hailey to her 440,000 followers on Instagram, has died due to complications from childbirth, her husband, Los Angeles firefighter Matt Okula, announced on social media on Tuesday. 'Words cannot convey the depth of the loss I feel. Hailey was more than I could have ever dreamed of in a wife and partner,' her husband wrote. 'For nearly 13 years, she stood by my side in the hardest of times, loving me endlessly, even when I felt undeserving of that love. She was my everything.' In an interview with L.A.'s KTTV, Matt Okula said his wife, Hailey, went into cardiac arrest moments after their son Crew was born. Matt Okula also identified the cause of his wife's cardiac arrest as an amniotic fluid embolism. Doctor cites the pope's 'surprising improvement' after surviving life-threatening crises An amniotic fluid embolism is 'a rare and life-threatening complication that occurs when a pregnant woman gets amniotic fluid into their bloodstream just before, during or immediately after childbirth,' according to the Cleveland Clinic. This fluid, upon entering the bloodstream, can cause an allergic reaction, which can then lead to cardiac arrest or severe bleeding, the Cleveland Clinic explains. It is currently unknown why some people have this type of allergic reaction, note both the Cleveland Clinic and the Amniotic Fluid Embolism Foundation (AFEF). The rate of occurrences of amniotic fluid embolisms is difficult to pinpoint, but researchers with the University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the State University of New York estimate that amniotic fluid embolisms occur during 1 out of every 8,000 or 80,000 births globally. The researchers also said that amniotic fluid embolisms are 'the second leading cause of peripartum maternal death and the primary cause of peripartum cardiac arrest' in the United States, per a report published with the National Institutes of Health. Survivability rates are also difficult to estimate, but the AFEF puts it between 20% and 60%, citing published medical data. 'Although survivability has increased over the last 20 years with advances in critical care and obstetric medicine, it cannot be emphasized enough that an amniotic fluid embolism is extremely difficult to treat and considered one of the most fatal birth complications in the world,' the AFEF says. The Okulas had wanted to be parents for years, Matt said in his Tuesday Instagram post. 'After years of infertility struggles and a long, challenging IVF process, we were overjoyed to be expecting Crew,' he wrote. 'Hailey faced every hurdle with so much courage and love — even though her body went through so much, she never waivered.' Why do we say 'God bless you' when someone sneezes? Hailey Okula was known for using her videos to educate newly graduated nurses about the field. She also established RN New Grads, a resource for new nurses, in 2019, according to the business website. 'She was so proud of it and was dedicated to creating something meaningful, not just for herself, but for the nursing community she loved so much.' Matt said her spirit, courage and love will live on through their son. 'Crew is going to grow up hearing about the incredible woman his mom was — how strong, brilliant and fearless she was in everything she did, He'll know that she was a true force, changing lives and leaving a legacy that will never be forgotten,' Matt said.
