Investigation: Person found dead in Barberton apartment fire
**Related Video Above: What to know about fire safety BARBERTON, Ohio (WJW) — It's not yet clear what led to a fatal fire in Barberton Monday morning. The Barberton Fire Department was called to the area of 2nd Street Northwest for reports of an apartment fire just before 10 a.m., the department wrote in a press release. Man charged with murder in Barberton shooting Fire was reportedly coming from an apartment on the first floor of the building. Once firefighters were able to put out the flames, they entered the residence and found a person had died. The victim's identity is not yet being reported until after the family has been notified, the fire department said. Investigation into fire at popular Mexican restaurant Kaballos Mexican Kitchen & Bar in Middlefield The amount of damage to the building was not reported and it's not known if other people were displaced. 3 former East Cleveland officers sentenced to prison
EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (WJW) – Three former East Cleveland police officers were sentenced Monday afternoon for corruption-related crimes that happened from 2020-2023. East Cleveland community members spoke out during the sentencing of former East Cleveland Commander Larry McDonald Monday morning. Chardon man sentenced in ambulance crash that killed patient Back in January, McDonald was found guilty by a jury on charges of tampering with evidence, obstructing official business, and dereliction of duty, among others. Prosecutors said in March of 2023, McDonald was pursuing a motorist when the motorist's car crashed in Cleveland. Evidence showed McDonald left and didn't report the incident to dispatch. In the end, McDonald was led from the courtroom in handcuffs after a judge sentenced him to four years in prison. Next up, former East Cleveland sergeant Anthony Holmes. Investigation into fire at popular Mexican restaurant Kaballos Mexican Kitchen & Bar in Middlefield In 2024, a jury found Holmes guilty of tampering with records, fraud, interfering with civil rights and dereliction of duty. The charges stem from a police pursuit last year. Prosecutors said Holmes struck the victim's vehicle and told another officer to say the victim had struck his vehicle. In the end, a judge sentenced Holmes to one year in prison. Last, former East Cleveland police detective Ian McInnes. Last year, McInnis was found guilty of felonious assault, assault, interfering with civil rights and dereliction of duty. Prosecutors said McInnis was involved with three different cases of assault during arrests. Massillon man hit by SUV, killed in Canton: Police In the end, McInnis was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. Massillon man hit by SUV, killed in Canton: Police
CANTON, Ohio (WJW) – The Canton Police Department is investigating after a man was struck and killed by an SUV on Friday night. Canton police officers responded to the accident in the 3400 block of Harmont Avenue around 9:25 p.m. Investigation into fire at popular Mexican restaurant Kaballos Mexican Kitchen & Bar in Middlefield According to investigators, a 2022 Ford Escape was heading north on Harmont when it hit a man walking across the roadway. The pedestrian, later identified as 41-year-old Calvin Scott of Massillon, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday. The SUV driver wasn't injured in the crash. Man charged with murder in Barberton shooting Investigators said the driver isn't suspect of using drugs or alcohol. According to toxicology reports, 'alcohol was determined to be a factor for the pedestrian,' the police department said. CALIFORNIA (WJW) – A confused cat was caught on video the moment a large earthquake hit Southern California near San Diego Monday. Ring camera footage captured by X user @mintbury shows the cat looking around as the earthquake shakes their home in San Diego. Investigation into fire at popular Mexican restaurant Kaballos Mexican Kitchen & Bar in Middlefield According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the 5.2-magnitude earthquake was near Julian, California in San Diego County. In a comment below the video, @mintbury said his cat 'was not happy.' Southern California jolted by a strong earthquake near San Diego '(I'm) definitely going to spoil her when I get home,' he said. Man pleads guilty to targeting neighbors with antisemitic graffiti
CLEVELAND (WJW) – A man accused of targeting his neighbors with antisemitic graffiti entered guilty pleas to amended charges Monday. Ryan Kellogg, 37, of Orange Village was arrested on October 27, 2024. Pet food recalled after testing positive for salmonella and listeria: FDA Police reported someone spray-painted graffiti on garage doors at two homes along Orangewood Drive. One door was marked with a swastika. Police said Kellogg returned to the home that had been vandalized with a swastika, 'and began spray painting it again,' according to a news release. A police officer allegedly caught him in the act, and surveillance video linked Kellogg to the scene, police said. Investigation into fire at popular Mexican restaurant Kaballos Mexican Kitchen & Bar in Middlefield Kellogg is also an Orange Village resident, according to court records, and lived down the street from the homes that were targeted. Kellogg pleaded guilty Monday to menacing by stalking, ethnic intimidation and vandalism. Five counts were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Kellogg will serve five years of probation for each count, according to court records.
