Khumalo still hopes for Cosafa semis berth
Bafana Bafana Cosafa Cup coach Vela Khumalo remains hopeful his troops will make it into the semifinals of this year's tournament. The national second-string team kept that dream alive with a 2-0 win in their group A fixture against Zimbabwe at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Kabelo Dlamini converted a first-half penalty, while Ime Okon headed in a second goal near the end to make sure of the points. Coach Khumalo said the weekend's victory was a huge confidence boost. SA are grouped with Zimbabwe, Mauritius and Mozambique. Mozambique head the group A with four points from two games ahead of their final fixture against Zimbabwe, followed by South Africa (three), Mauritius (two) and Zimbabwe (one). 'This is the boost that we needed; however, we are still hopeful,' Khumalo said. 'We're still saying Mozambique must win against Zimbabwe, then you know. 'We need to win the remaining game now. We need to win against Mauritius and than we take it from there.' After their opening 1-0 defeat to Mozambique, the coach said they went into Saturday's match under pressure. 'When you join football, it is pressure on its own. So add that we are hosts, we didn't start well, and we are missing chances. That gives you pressure. 'However, after our analysis we were very positive that we are at least going to get goals from this and win the game and move forward. 'When we played the first game against Mozambique, we played 4-2-3-1. We then said let's have more numbers because we were a little bit thin on top. 'So, we opted for 3-4-3 and we brought in the two 10s that were coming inside to support our striker. We did that because we knew that when they play SA, they will go low block.' SA's final group game against Mauritius is at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday (3pm). The Herald

Bafana B side overcome Zimbabwe to keep hope for semifinals of Cosafa Cup alive
Bafana Bafana 'B' team defeated their neighbours Zimbabwe 2-0 to register their first win of the 2025 Cosafa Cup under way in Bloemfontein. South Africa scored a goal in each half during the Group A's match at Free State Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Orlando Pirates star Kabelo Dlamini scored a penalty five minutes before the halftime break while SuperSport United's young defender Ime Okon found the back of the net through an impressive header on 78 minutes. Bafana needed to win the match to place themselves in a better position to proceed to the next round of the tournament. The Vela Khumalo-coached outfit started their participation this year with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Mozambique, who are top of the pool by four points after their second outing ended in a draw with Mauritius. Khumalo's men displayed a good performance and created tons of opportunities, which were either not used or well defended by their opponents. There were excellent performances from players such as Boitumelo Radiopane, Masindi Nemtajela, who is heavily linked with a move to Pirates, Man of the Match Kamogelo Sebelebele, Siphesihle Mkhize and Gape Moralo. Nemtajela won the penalty that saw the hosts score their first goal of the competition this year. The Marumo Gallants forward gave the Zimbabweans defenders a tough time and combined well with Radiopane. Okon's goal came from a well-taken free kick by Moralo. Bafana will hope to give another solid display when they face Mauritius in the last match of the group stages at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein at 3pm on Tuesday. Only the winners of the group will proceed to the semifinals.

On an emotional night where they were bidding farewell to their ' padre ', Orlando Pirates produced a sensational performance over hapless Golden Arrows befitting the occasion. Pirates get derby final boost and keep alive title chances beating Arrows
Orlando Pirates had to work hard, ultimately flexing their muscle to produce a 2-1 Betway Premiership victory against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night to keep alive their fading title hopes. Leaders Mamelodi Sundowns (61 points from 24 games) need seven points form their last four matches to clinch a record-extending eighth successive championship. Pirates (52 points from 23 games), though, kept up the pressure so that if the Brazilians somehow do slip up, they can be there to feed on the scraps. Patrick Maswanganyi put the Buccaneers ahead in the 51st minute, as Siyanda Mthanti soon equalised for coach Manqoba Mngithi's keyed up Arrows, in need of points in 14th place, in the 59th. The ambulance is back 🚑🚨 It's a special assist from Kabelo Dlamini 🤩 📺 Stream #BetwayPrem on DStv: @McDonalds_SA — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 6, 2025 Substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa produced the 72nd-minute winner for coach José Riveiro's Bucs. The result comes as a boost for Pirates ahead of their Soweto derby Nedbank Cup final clash against Kaizer Chiefs at the same venue on Saturday (3.30pm). That derby, and the win against Arrows follow Bucs' 2-1 win against Chiefs in a league clash at FNB Stadium this past Saturday. Both sides had their chances in an opening half where Arrows at times rattled Pirates by pressing them effectively. In the second half, Pirates, despite conceding an equaliser, upped their tempo and level of control and used their player power to muscle an advantage and victory. For Maswanganyi played Kabelo Dlamini into the box who saw his shot cleared off the line, while Karim Kimvuidi skipped past some players on the tight and shot into the side-netting. Shades of prime Zinedine Zidane 🔥 This turn from Kabelo Dlamini 🥵 #BetwayPrem | #SSDiski — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 6, 2025 Just before the break Mthanthi was put through on the right of the box by Siphesihle Msomi and shot across the face. Six minutes back from the change rooms Bucs got the breakthrough when Dlamini's superbly-weighted pass from just behind the centre circle picked out the run of Maswanganyi peeling off his marker and in space to sprint through, round goalkeeper Edward Maova and finish. Substitute Simphiwe Selebe, the 20-year-old youth product making his second appearance for Pirates off the bench for Makhehlene Makhaula at the break, played in a pass from the left for wingback Bandile Shandu on the run in the middle to control and volley high. But Arrows earned a deserved goal on balance of chances when they worked the ball across the box to Velemseni Ndwandwe on the right to stab in a pass to the feet of Mthanti to finish past Sipho Chaine. Pirates regained the lead when a half-clearance was headed back into Arrows' box to Maswanganyi to head in the direction of Mabasa, who blasted a volley past Maova.
