Watt's absence isn't a smoking gun, but it's not great for the Steelers
(Black & Gold Nation) — All eyes will be on team attendance Tuesday, as the Steelers open up their second round of OTAs, after DK Metcalf and T.J. Watt were notable absentees last week during the team's first three sessions. While Metcalf has been around the team and facilities outside of OTAs, he's new to the city and teammates and would greatly benefit from every minute in his new environment. While Watt's absence could be a precursor to a hold-out, or hold-in when the team goes to Latrobe next month. It's no secret Watt wants a new contract and longtime beat reporter Mark Kaboly said on his radio show, Kaboly and Mack, that the team has a 'significant' offer on the table. One that could be similar to the 4-year, $160 million haul Myles Garrett got from the Browns. He is currently in the final year of a 4-year, $112 million contract he signed in 2021. He's due to make $21 million this season and carry a $30 million cap hit. Versatility will be mantra of Steelers running back room Watt has not always been a steady presence during the optional workouts. There is no saying his choice to skip these workouts is anything more than an aging star trying to limit unnecessary reps. But given Watt's cryptic social media activity this spring, there is reason to suspect he could stay away from the team until he has a new deal. While these OTAs are optional, Watt could begin racking up team fines next week during mandatory minicamp. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Aaron Rodgers to help call plays for Steelers? NFL world buzzing over surprising quarterback-coach idea
Steelers might lean on Aaron Rodgers' experience for play-calling in unexpected move brewing in NFL (YouTube/Netflix) The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be inching closer to landing one of the most iconic quarterbacks in modern football—Aaron Rodgers. However, despite widespread optimism, nothing has been finalized yet, and a potential snag in the process is beginning to surface: who's really calling the shots on offense? Aaron Rodgers may soon hold a headset for the Steelers in a wild NFL coaching twist Once it became evident that Justin Fields was heading to the New York Jets, the Steelers quickly turned their attention to Aaron Rodgers. The front office wasted no time in securing contingency plans by signing Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, but make no mistake—those moves were just to build depth. The goal remains clear: bring in Rodgers to lead this team. Yet, all signs suggest the delay isn't coming from the Steelers' side. According to multiple reports, Rodgers is currently dealing with personal matters that are preventing him from making a firm commitment. That alone would be enough to stall negotiations, but an emerging debate could further complicate things. During a recent episode of Kaboly and Mack, a podcast hosted by The Athletic's Mark Kaboly, a key detail came to light. Kaboly questioned how much say Rodgers might expect to have in Pittsburgh's offensive playbook. 'Do you think the playbook matters to Aaron Rodgers? Because I really do believe that it's gonna be Aaron Rodgers' playbook. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 입꼬리 올리는 여름, 인천에서 33만원 임플란트 만나보세요 플란치과 더 알아보기 Undo He's gonna call what he wants to call and that might be a little bit of a battle,' he said. 'I wanna believe that Aaron Rodgers is gonna get a lot of carte blanche when it comes to this offense. What he wants to do and what he wants to call." That candid observation sheds light on a dynamic that may not sit easily with the Steelers' brass. Kaboly went further to reveal what he's been hearing behind the scenes: 'I've heard rumblings of Rodgers wanting to call his own plays. I don't know how true that is, so just keep that in the back of your mind more than a report or anything to that fact,' he added. 'I mean he's been in the league 20 years. He has four MVPs. You have to assume some of that was going to be that anyway. " Rodgers commanding a high level of influence over the playbook shouldn't come as a surprise. With two decades of experience and four MVP titles, few quarterbacks possess a football IQ as seasoned as his. Still, the Steelers have traditionally maintained tight control over their offensive system—especially after Ben Roethlisberger's departure. If Pittsburgh is serious about securing Rodgers, it might have to loosen its grip and let a proven veteran do what he does best: take control. Whether or not both parties can reach that middle ground remains the biggest question looming over what could be one of the most high-profile signings in recent franchise history. Mason Rudolph Reveals What Steelers Told Him About QB Situation Before Signing
Quarterback Mason Rudolph shares what the Pittsburgh Steelers told him before signing with them this offseason. Quarterback Mason Rudolph currently sits atop the Pittsburgh Steelers depth chart, but he revealed he was never guaranteed to be the starter when he signed with the team back in March. Advertisement 'I think they know what I can do, what we were able to do there towards the end of 2023. They're confident in me. They know I can play well when asked of me, when my number's called,' Rudolph said on the 'Kaboly and Mack' podcast. 'I assumed they were going to sign people and add to the roster. They always go to training camp with four quarterbacks. So I knew that going in.' When Rudolph reunited with the Steelers, the only other quarterback on the roster was Skylar Thompson. Pittsburgh has since added Ohio State's Will Howard with its sixth-round pick (No. 185) in the 2025 NFL Draft, but the team is planning to develop him. That has pathed the way for Rudolph to be the Steelers starter — for now. As Rudolph mentioned, Pittsburgh will still add a fourth quarterback to its roster and many believe that will be Aaron Rodgers. Advertisement If that's the case, Rudolph will return to the backup role he has played in for most of his NFL career. But it seems he would be just fine with that after Rodgers made an early impact on his career. 'I've met Aaron after games only, over the years,' Rudolph said. 'I remember my rookie year, we played a preseason game there in Lambeau and kind of had a rough, early outing, and it was so cool I thought for him to come over and he said, 'Hello,' and kind of offered some words of encouragement. It motivated me to keep working hard, which doesn't happen a lot.' Only time will tell whether Rudolph will be the Steelers' starter or backup, but he has proven his ability to step up when needed. In 2023, he started the final three games of the regular season after Kenny Pickett was lost to a high-ankle sprain and Mitchell Trubisky struggled in his limited action. Advertisement Rudolph responded with the best play of his career, completing 55 of 75 passes (74.3%) for 719 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions while leading Pittsburgh to three straight victories and a playoff spot. Pat Freiermuth: DK Metcalf, George Pickens will create conflict for defenses
Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth doesn't have any more of an idea about who will be the team's quarterback than anyone else, but he does think the team's eventual choice will be stepping into a good situation. Freiermuth's good feelings about the passing game are tied to the arrival of wide receiver DK Metcalf. During an appearance on the Kaboly and Mack podcast, Freiermuth was asked about speculation regarding a possible trade of wide receiver George Pickens this offseason and said his conversations with Pickens have him feeling like the two wideouts are going to share space in a lineup that will be a lot more potent now that Metcalf is in Pittsburgh. 'I've talked to GP a decent amount this offseason,' Freiermuth said. 'GP's a great guy, he's good to have in the locker room. Obviously, stuff happens on the field, but that's just part of playing football and being a competitor. He cares, he tries a lot, he works hard. He's a hell of a talent as well. Having him and DK on the outside, obviously with me in the middle of the field, is gonna cause defenses a lot of conflict. That's what I'm excited about. I know GP is ready to work with DK. GP is never shy of competition, so he's gonna rely on DK for his advice and stuff like that, but GP's ready to roll for sure.' The investment the Steelers made in Metcalf might signal that they're not ready to do the same with Pickens, but it could also set the 2022 second-round pick for a big contract year if those conflicted defenses are unable to hold him in check come the fall.

Pat Freiermuth: We have all the belief in Mason Rudolph
Anyone hoping that Aaron Rodgers might break his silence and make an announcement about his 2025 plans on Wednesday night was disappointed, so the wait to find out if he'll be the Steelers quarterback will roll on. Tight end Pat Freiermuth is one of many people whose future will be impacted by that choice and he said on the Kaboly and Mack podcast that he's exchanged some DMs with Rodgers as the process has played out this offseason. Those exchanges didn't leave him with a better idea about Rodgers's plans, but he said he has trust in head coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Omar Khan to put the team in a good position heading into the season. Advertisement Freiermuth said that his trust extends to quarterback Mason Rudolph, who returned as a free agent after spending 2024 with the Titans, as well. "As guys on the team, we have all the belief in Mason," Freiermuth said. "You know he made some big plays when he was here last, winning three straight games to make the playoffs. Whatever happens, happens, but we will see." While doubts exist about how Rodgers would fit in Pittsburgh, it's hard to imagine that going into the season with Rudolph as the No. 1 quarterback would have the city brimming with confidence about how the 2025 campaign will turn out for the Steelers.
