Geelong v Brisbane Lions AFL Round 15: Live updates, SuperCoach scores, teams

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan admits premiership hero Kai Lohmann has lost confidence as he struggles to reach the 'high bar' he set last year. Lohmann, who kicked four goals in Brisbane's 60-point grand final win over Sydney last season to cap off a memorable campaign, has struggled for form and consistency this year. The 22-year-old forward has only kicked four goals in nine appearances this season in a campaign that has been affected by ankle and shoulder injuries. Lohmann had to settle for the substitute's role last Saturday against GWS Giants, and despite being injected into the contest late in the first quarter after Jack Payne suffered a season-ending knee injury, he failed to kick a goal in the Lions' 11-point loss. 'He set a high bar last year and he has probably become a little bit too preoccupied with reaching that high bar again or going past it,' Fagan said ahead of Brisbane's battle with Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night. 'In the process he's lost a little bit of confidence because he hasn't been able to play as well as he would have liked, and yes he's had a lot of injuries. 'We'll just be patient with him. He'll get there.' Fagan threw similar support behind Lohmann's fellow forward Charlie Cameron, who has also battled for form this season. Cameron has kicked only 14 goals in 12 appearances this year and has often struggled to get his hands on the ball. 'He's had a little bit of an up and down year. It's probably his accuracy that's hurt him more than anything. He's had plenty of shots on goal,' Fagan said of Cameron, who has kicked 16 behinds. 'He was really good against Adelaide (two weeks ago) … we'll back him in.' The Lions will want to improve their overall accuracy on Friday night after kicking a combined total of 21 goals and 33 behinds in back-to-back losses to the Crows and Giants. 'We're nine wins and four losses (and a draw), so we're in a reasonably healthy position, particularly compared to last year, but that (goalkicking accuracy) is the one glaring thing that has hurt us in the last couple of weeks,' Fagan said. To avoid a third successive loss, the Lions must win on Friday at a ground where they have suffered defeat 13 consecutive times, with their most recent victory at GMHBA Stadium coming in 2003. 'We've ticked off many things over the last few years – that's all part of being competitive,' Fagan said. 'It's all part of goal setting and striving.' Fagan confirmed that experienced defender Darcy Gardiner would replace Payne in Brisbane's backline. 'We've been trying to turn him (Gardiner) into a forward, but his career as an AFL player has been as a backman mostly,' he said. 'We're really confident he can go back there and have an impact.'

Brisbane forwards Charlie Cameron and Kai Lohmann tipped to bounce back to form

Lions young gun Logan Morris has backed struggling fellow forwards Charlie Cameron and Kai Lohmann to 'crack open a game' sooner rather than later in Brisbane's bid to bounce back to form. The Lions head into Saturday's clash against Hawthorn at the MCG on the back of two disappointing results – a 71-71 draw with North Melbourne in Hobart and an 11-point home loss to Melbourne. While it's far from panic stations for the reigning premiers, who are in second place on the ladder, the Lions will need to improve if they are to beat the Hawks, who haven't lost to Brisbane since 2019. 'Last week (against) Melbourne we showed so much good signs of good footy, and a lot of it was just general execution skills,' Morris said in reflecting on the Gabba loss. 'If we just keep playing the way we've been playing, things will come. We don't have to change everything. We'll just keep sticking to what we know, and we'll open the game.' Brisbane's problems have included a lack of execution in the forward line, where grand final heroes Cameron and Lohmann are yet to fire. Both have had interrupted campaigns. Cameron missed Brisbane's opening two matches with a calf problem, while Lohmann has only played in five of the Lions' 10 games because of ankle and shoulder injuries. Lohmann is yet to kick a goal this season and has just 24 disposals, while Cameron's radar has been off in his eight matches, having booted eight goals and 15 behinds. 'They probably haven't been kicking the goals that everyone from the outside probably sees, but they do a mountain of work in the club,' Morris said of the battling pair. 'They're trying to keep building on their games, and they bring the energy, they bring other things than just kicking goals, so we really respect those two lads. 'They've come back from injuries as well, so we'll keep supporting them, and no doubt they'll crack open a game soon.' While Cameron and Lohmann have found the going tough, Morris, 20, has been one of Brisbane's better performing forwards this season as he has thrived with having extra responsibility following the retirement of Joe Daniher after last year's grand final win over Sydney. 'I just try each week, to just keep getting better,' said Morris, who has kicked 16 goals in nine appearances this season. 'Last year … I just tried to play with freedom. This year I've tried to take it on a bit more and play a bigger role within the team. 'I think I've slowly done that each week, and I just want to keep doing that, get respect in the game, and who knows what happens in the coming weeks.'

Alarms set as 'suspicious' Lions welcome Eagles

Chris Fagan will set his alarm for Brisbane's lunch date with West Coast, insistent the Eagles won't be easy pickings for the defending champions. The Lions will unfurl their AFL premiership flag before midday on Sunday at the Gabba, with the first bounce at 12.10pm AEST. Coach Fagan admitted the early start, in what's become the side's first home game this season after their postponed opening-round fixture, would hit differently. "It changes my routine, geez, 12 o'clock," Fagan smirked. "I can't remember the last time a game started that early. Right in the middle of the day, maximum heat. "But we'll play in whatever situation is presented to us." The Eagles were hammered by Gold Coast last weekend, the Suns' 87-point win their biggest in club history. The visitors dominated the contested possession count (145-102), inside-50s (67-34) and clearances (50-33). Compounding problems, All-Australian spearhead Jake Waterman will miss up to two weeks with a back issue that is causing pain in his calf. But goalsneak Liam Ryan is back from a hamstring injury. Eagles coach Andrew McQualter is demanding more around the contest against the Lions. "You take last week with a grain of salt and (we're) expecting a way better version," Fagan said. "We had a game against them last year in Perth, a hard fought, close game (the Lions won by 13)." The Lions copped a 54-point thrashing from Port Adelaide in the first round of 2023 then beat Melbourne the following week. "I'm pretty suspicious of round one results and we've been involved in that ourselves," Fagan said. Small forward Kai Lohmann's ankle injury has created a chance for 19-year-old Will McLachlan to debut, while former Suns key forward Sam Day will play his first game for Brisbane after being delisted by Gold Coast last year. Bruce Reville is also back in the fray while Charlie Cameron (calf) and Brandon Starcevich (concussion) won't play. "Impressed us when he arrived last year (in the mid-season rookie draft) and contributed to a lot of scoring," Fagan said of McLachlan. "He's a really good story ... couldn't force his way in (last season) but he's been right there amongst it and the injury to Kai Lohmann gives him the opportunity." Day, in for Darcy Fort, is effectively the retired Joe Daniher's replacement, assisting Oscar McInerney in the ruck and providing a contest in the forward-50. "He's different from Joe, a different sort of player, but he'll help us," Fagan said.

‘Lot to look forward to': Cult figure's big move

Brisbane Lions grand final hero and emerging cult figure Kai Lohmann has signed a two-year contract extension, adding momentum to the club's premiership defence that begins in three weeks. The 21-year-old kicked three goals in the opening half of last year's demolition of Sydney at the MCG, finishing with four and capping off a breakout year that has earnt him a spot at the Lions until the end of 2027. Lohman kicked 36 goals from 27 games in 2024, including his pivotal grand final performance, and resisted the urge to return home to Victoria by recommitting to the Lions. 'It feels amazing to be re-signing with the Lions and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to stay with such a great club,' Lohmann said. 'I feel like I'm part of a big family rather than a football club. I love everything about this club, which is why I re-signed, it's not just because of one person or one thing. 'There is also a lot for the club to look forward to over the next few years, so I am really excited I will be here to see what we can achieve.' Lohman only played eight matches in his first two seasons after being drafted in 2021 to the Lions but after a taste of success wants more. 'I had some great moments last year, but it wouldn't have been possible without the support around me both in and out of the club,' he said. 'I am really excited to continue improving and working to get the best out of myself and my teammates every day. 'I am obsessed with trying to get better and personally I want to contribute as much as I can to helping the team and the club be successful. 'We have a very special group here and I hope we can achieve a lot of success together in the next few years.'
