Liverpool 2-4 AC Milan: Premier League champions handed humbling defeat in tour opener
Liverpool were dealt a lesson in the art of the counter-attack as they were beaten 4-2 by AC Milan in Hong Kong. The Reds, playing the first game of their pre-season tour of Asia, arrived at the Kai Tak Sports Park in good spirits after morale-bolstering wins over Preston and Stoke City in their first friendlies of the new campaign. However, the ramp up in opposition quality was evident, as the Premier League champions were schooled by Massimiliano Allegri and his crafty Italian side. Rafael Leao, the maverick Portuguese forward, opened the scoring in clinical fashion as he hared off down the left, driving into the box to take full advantage of the space left by makeshift right-back Luca Stephenson. He faced up Tyler Morton, filling in at the heart of the defence, before rifling into the far corner beyond Alisson to give Milan the lead inside 10 minutes. Dominik Szoboszlai showed his quality with a delightful equaliser on 26 minutes, curling a delicious effort up and over Mike Maignan to level the scores and get the Reds in level at half time. However, despite Arne Slot changing the whole side at the interval, it was Milan's continuity that kept the momentum with the Serie A outfit. They went ahead with the second period just seven minutes old, as they broke clear once more, exploiting the chasm of space left at the back by the Premier League side. Leao span clear to latch onto Noah Okafor's pass, and he picked out the supporting Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who stroked home to put Milan back in the driving seat. Their advantage extended when Okafor swept in a superb third, making stunning contact on Alexis Saelemakers' square to double the lead. Liverpool struggled to turn their dominance in possession into golden opportunities, and the closest they came in the second 45 was when Cody Gakpo skewed an effort into the side-netting after a stunning pick-out from Tyler Morton. Gakpo did get his goal as he planted a header into the far corner to halve the deficit in injury time, but the scoring was not done, as deputy goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili's loose pass to stand-in central defender Kostas Tsimikas sold the Greek short. Okafor pounced, and raced clear to tap into the unguarded net. Back to the drawing board for Slot, who may decide not to be quite so experimental next time around, when his side play Yokohama Marinos on Wednesday, before a visit from Athletic Bilbao to Anfield.

John Lee vows to make Hong Kong ‘preferred destination' after 12% surge in tourists
Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu has pledged to adopt innovative thinking to make the city a 'preferred travel destination', following a 12 per cent increase in tourist arrivals during the first half of the year. Latest figures by the Hong Kong Tourism Board showed that the city welcomed about 3.48 million visitors in June, bringing the total number from January to June to more than 23.6 million, a 12 per cent year-on-year increase. Three-quarters of the arrivals, or 17.8 million, came from mainland China. The board said on Saturday that about 5.84 million visitors arrived from the rest of the world, marking a 17 per cent increase compared with the same period last year. 'Visitors from most short-haul markets, including Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines, increased by at least 25 per cent year on year,' it said. 'Among long-haul markets, Australia recorded a notable growth of 33 per cent year on year.' In a Facebook post, Lee attributed the tourism boom partly to a string of arts, cultural and sports mega-events. He also pointed to the opening of Kai Tak Sports Park, the city's newest hub for world-class concerts and sporting events.

Hong Kong needs more than Kai Tak venue to realise mega-event dreams
The opening of Kai Tak Sports Park has given a substantial boost to the city's bid to become a leading centre for hosting top international events. Hundreds of thousands of spectators have flocked to the venue in the last four months to enjoy an impressive selection of performances. But the impact of the new complex, with its 50,000-seat stadium and indoor arena, on other venues must be considered. There is a need to adapt. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has revealed there will be a repositioning of locations it manages and a shake-up of booking arrangements. Hong Kong Coliseum, in Hung Hom, is famous for Cantopop concerts, but sports events made up more than a fifth of successful applications to hire it last year. The venue is set to host a basketball competition in the National Games in November and an international table tennis tournament in December. In future, priority will be given to concerts rather than sport, giving the 12,500-seat location a clearer identity. The move should open up much-needed slots for local performers, who struggle to book it. Only 37 applications out of 220 last year were granted, and there have been complaints pop stars have repeatedly been rejected. Sha Tin Town Hall will, under the plans, focus on Cantonese opera, providing welcome new opportunities for professional troupes. Fans are still reeling from the closure of the much-loved Sunbeam Theatre , even though it has found a new location. Efforts to promote and develop Cantonese opera must continue. The East Kowloon Cultural Centre in Kowloon Bay, set to fully open by the end of the year, will feature long-running performances and art technology, broadening the city's entertainment scene. It makes sense to differentiate between venues, adjusting to the Kai Tak era. But the booking process must be accessible, transparent and fair, with clear criteria.
