With the Summer 2025 anime season already stacked with returning heavyweights, this is the one that's shaping up to stomp through the competition. The new trailer teases an action-heavy return, featuring updated looks at the core cast, new characters entering the fray, and another collaboration with OneRepublic. Their new ending theme, 'Beautiful Colors,' plays over the trailer and sets a emotional tone for the mayhem ahead. Season 2 officially premieres in Japan on July 19th, and, just like Season 1, it'll stream internationally via Crunchyroll and X. The cast is expanding in big ways this season. New additions include: Koki Uchiyama as Gen Narumi, Hiroki Yasumoto as Eiji Hasegawa, Kana Hanazawa as Rin Shinonome, and Kotono Mitsuishi as Hikaru Shinomiya. The original creative team is back as well, and it includes directors Shigeyuki Miya and Tomomi Tamiya, Tetsuya Nishio handles character design, and Yuta Bando scores the series. Studio Khara continues to handle the kaiju designs alongside Production I.G., so expect more of the slick animation and intense creature action that helped Season 1 stand out. Crunchyroll teases the plot for Season 2 as follows: 'Thanks to Isao Shinomiya, Kafka Hibino avoids being turned into a weapon. As new recruits head to their posts, Kafka meets Gen Narumi, the strongest man in the Defense Force and leader of the First Division. 'Kafka embraces the power of Kaiju No. 8 to force Gen to recognize his strength. Meanwhile, Kaiju No. 9 lurks in the shadows as the greatest threat the Defense Force has faced awaits.' Creator Naoya Matsumoto is also preparing to release the final chapter of the Kaiju No. 8 manga just as the new season premieres, making this a milestone summer for the franchise. Between the anime and the manga's finale, fans are in for an all-out blowout. Season 2 premieres July 19th. The opening theme of the show is a haunting new track titled 'You Can't Run From Yourself' by Aurora.

Anime Expo 2025: Crunchyroll Is Bringing Spectacular Premieres & Guests
Crunchyroll is set to bring a huge slew of anime premieres and news for Anime Expo 2025, including Let's Play and Kaiju No. 8. July is fast approaching, which means Anime Expo is returning—one of the world's biggest conventions and celebrations of everything anime. Crunchyroll is set to bring a huge slew of anime premieres and news for Anime Expo 2025, including anticipated series such as Let's Play, Gachiakuta and Kaiju No. 8. Anime Expo continues to be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles, California, USA, from July 3rd to July 6th. The orange streaming site will have its usual humongous booth on the floor (Booth #2526), as well as the Crunchyroll Stage in the Platinum Ballroom at the JW Marriott—all weekend long. Crunchyroll will announce all-new titles set to stream on the platform, with several set to premiere and offer first looks at Anime Expo 2025. These include Let's Play, the gaming-themed webcomic premieres at Anime Expo, and Otherworldly Munchkin: Let's Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP!, a new comedic isekai series. In terms of established anime series, the largest anime streaming library is showcasing The Rising of the Shield Hero, Frieren: Beyond the Journey, The Apothecary Diaries, Dr. Stone, My Dress-Up Darling, Kaiju No. 8, and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. Let's Play follows Samara 'Sam' Young is a developer in Los Angeles who is about to achieve her dreams with her first video game, Ruminate. That is, until a popular streamer gives the game a scathing review. Even worse, Sam finds out the troublesome critic is now her new neighbor. Get lost in a comedic, romantic, and all-too-real story about gaming, memes, and social anxiety. Come for the plot, stay for the doggo. This rom-com series sounds super kawaii, and one where the stakes do not always revolve around saving the world—like Deku in My Hero Academia. Currently, there is no premiere date/window, but it should be coming out later this year. Otherworldly Munchkin: Let's Speedrun the Dungeon with Only 1 HP! contains a little different vibe, leaning more into fantasy and adventure. 16-year-old Yukito Kirihara lives with his 14-year-old sister Sana, whom he treasures more than anyone else. But when an ogre shows up outside of his window looking for Sana, Yukito leaps to save her—and is killed. He's offered the promise of reincarnation by a mysterious woman, who gives him a character sheet in a mysterious book. But when Yukito sees Sana in there, too, he sets off to find her, and save them both—even if he only has 1 HP with which to do it! Two other first looks and premieres Anime Expo attendees should check out are for Clevatess and Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse. Clevatess is a unique fantasy story where the story revolves around the titular Demon King, rather than from the heroes' perspectives. Visitors will be treated to a special one-hour premiere. Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse is david production's first original anime series; attendees can check out the two-episode premiere. One of the best parts about conventions like Anime Expo is the fan interactions with the talent, sharing intimate moments at the talent's autograph signings/photoshoots, or panels. On top of the premieres, Crunchyroll is bringing many voice actors and production staff to talk about the hottest anime series they have worked on. Some of the guests include voice actors Yuki Aoi and Seto Asami from The Apothecary Diaries, and Megumi Ogata (the voice of Hanako-kun in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun)—along with Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun producers Yuki Katayama and Shota Komatsu. Over at booth #2526, Crunchyroll will have its most immersive anime experiences ever. Visitors will be able to check out immersive experiences and info for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle and Gachiakuta. The Crunchyroll Store is also making its typical appearance at booth #2135 with over 30 exclusive items. Among the offerings, do not miss out on the brand new Kaiju No. 8 Youtooz Vinyl Figure (Glow in the Dark Ver.). Lots of apparel options will also be featured from notable series like Shangri-La Frontier, Jujutsu Kaisen, and more. For those who cannot attend Anime Expo 2025, Crunchyroll will be posting highlights on their socials!

Kaiju No. 8 – Season 2 'Hoshina's Day Off' Recap & Review
Hoshina's Day Off The special episode of Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 begins with Reno tending to a sick Hibino, who's suffering from a stomach ache due to overeating. With some unexpected free time on his hands, Reno wonders what to do on his day off when he runs into Vice Captain Hoshina, who's also off-duty. Hoshina vaguely hints at having something planned and disappears soon after. Just then, Iharu shows up. While Iharu suspects that Hoshina is headed for a date, Reno bets he's doing extra training to get stronger. They decide to follow Hoshina to find out who's right. Hoshina goes on to buy premium dried squid for Mina, briefly runs into Kikoru and her friends, and drops them off at a restaurant. He also gives Haruichi and Aoi tips on where to buy cheap camping gear. Meanwhile, Iharu and Reno continue tailing him, and eventually all the Third Division new recruits gather together. They spot Hoshina delivering a huge metal box—one that Haruichi immediately recognizes as the type used to store defense gear. Jumping to conclusions, the recruits suspect that Hoshina might be selling their defense gear on the black market. United in their suspicion, they follow him further, until Hoshina finally catches them. It turns out he's been heading to a disaster prevention center owned by a retired Defense Force officer, the same man he had met earlier in the episode. Hoshina was actually donating his old gear to the center, not selling it. The rest of the day is spent at the center, playing with kindergarten children who've come to visit. Just as things settle down, a new kaiju alert sounds. Without hesitation, the entire group, including Hoshina who had been wearing his suit underneath his casual clothes, marches off to face the threat, closing the episode on a high note. The Episode Review Hoshina's Day Off, a special episode before the new season kicks off, leans into Kaiju No. 8's more heartwarming and comedic side, delivering an adorable and lighthearted story. Though it's an extra episode meant to spotlight the supporting cast, it's still very enjoyable, even if it's a little predictable. There's also a clear underlying message here about natural disasters in Japan, with kaiju serving as fictional metaphors. The episode subtly expresses a hope for a future where there are no more 'kaiju' (disasters) to fight, as mentioned by the center's owner. Overall, it's a quirky and thoughtful little detour, one last breath of fresh air before the real battle begins!
