Kaiju No. 8 – Season 2 Episode 4 Recap & Review
The Man Called Isao Shinomiya
Episode 4 of Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 begins with Kafka battling Kaiju No. 9 and seemingly defeating it, while Kikoru deals with the resurrected ant kaijus. Everybody cheers the victory until there's a kaiju signal detected, where the remains of Kaiju No. 8 confess to having not been able to kill Kaiju No. 8 but vow to at least take the Kaiju power back. This is when Kafka realizes that it hadn't been Kaiju No. 9's original body.
The moment Kafka says that out loud, Kaiju No. 9, hidden as a human in the control room, suddenly makes an appearance and attacks Isao Shinomiya. In the background, Kafka and Narumi hurry to aid him as Isao makes use of his power from Kaiju No. 2.
The battle begins, and it seems that Kaiju No. 9 has been evolving all this time, making him not easy to defeat. Isao then reminisces that he'd not been a typical father to Kikoru but would at least leave this world a better place for her by killing Kaiju No. 9, and he powers up his suit to the maximum energy. No matter how many hits he gets, Isao gathers more and more energy and is able to charge an energy beam, just like Kaiju No. 2's, onto Kaiju No. 9.
Even then, the beam isn't enough to kill Kaiju No. 9, who engulfs the mere shell of Isao as he remains devoid of self after the massive energy attack.
By the time Narumi and Kafka arrive, Isao is no more, and Kaiju No. 9 has killed and merged himself with him, gaining Kaiju No. 2's power along the way.
Kikoru suddenly comes and attacks him, refusing to believe in her father's death. Narumi takes charge, preparing his attack on Kaiju No. 9 when Kaiju No. 9 suddenly releases his wings, trying to escape after saying he's had enough for the day. The episode ends with both Narumi and Kaiju No. 8 attacking Kaiju No. 9 at the same time, but this time, Kaiju No. 9 sees right through their attacks and stops them.
The Episode Review
After a string of thrilling episodes, Episode 4 of Season 2 slows the action just enough to deliver a heavy emotional blow with the death of Isao Shinomiya. His loss not only carries weight for Kikoru on a deeply personal level, but also dramatically raises the stakes: there's now a gaping hole in the Defense Force's leadership, and one of their strongest veteran fighters is gone.
The battle itself is intense, showcasing just how terrifyingly adaptive Kaiju No. 9 has become. His calculated infiltration, ability to merge with Isao, and acquisition of Kaiju No. 2's powers make him the most formidable threat yet.
The fight also peels back the layers of Isao's character: a man who admits he was never the warmest father but still burns with the desire to leave the world safer for his daughter. That motivation fuels a desperate, all-out attack that, tragically, isn't enough.
By the time Kafka and Narumi arrive, the damage is done, and what follows is a heart-breaking moment as Kikoru refuses to accept her father's death. The closing moments keep the tension high, with Kaiju No. 9 casually retreating after declaring the fight over, only to fend off the combined attacks of Narumi and Kaiju No. 8 with unnerving ease.
With an ever-evolving, intelligent enemy and a Defense Force now weakened, the series has set the stage for even higher stakes ahead. Episode 4 blends high-intensity kaiju action with real emotional impact, marking a turning point that promises both thrilling battles and gut-wrenching drama in the episodes to come.
