No Kings Protest planned for Columbus this weekend

COLUMBUS, Ga. () — Demonstrators are taking to the streets tomorrow all across America Saturday, June 14, for what they're calling 'No Kings' protests. The event is being held in response to what the protestors say is the 'increasingly authoritarian' way President Donald Trump is running the country. We reached out to the group that has a permit for a protest in Columbus. The No Kings protests coincide with President Donald Trump's birthday celebration and a military parade celebrating the Army's 250th birthday in Washington. Kaitlin Bell is with Indivisible Columbus. She says we live in a democracy where liberty and justice cannot simply be thrown out the window. That is a, that's a dictatorship or that is a king and that is not what this country is about, very specifically 250 years ago that's what this count stated we were not about,' said Kaitlin Bell. President Donald Trump was asked Thursday for his response to the No Kings movement. 'I don't feel like a king, I have to go through hell to get things approved. Oh no, we're not a king, we're not a king at all,' said President Donald Trump. For Amy Bruce with the Phenix City group, it's the *indivisible* part for her. 'What this movement has taught me is that we have so much in common and we have so many talented people. If we all come together there is no telling what we can do and the change that we can effect,'said Amy Bruce, Indivisible Phenix City. Though the anti-Ice demonstrations in Los Angeles turned violent, Bell and Bruce say they're planning a peaceful, non violent gathering Saturday in Columbus. Columbus Police Chief Stoney Mathis released a statement about this weekend's protests– it reads in part 'We're fully prepared for the weekend ahead. We welcome peaceful demonstrations and fully support the right to free speech, but we also have a responsibility to protect our community, and we will not allow violence or disorder to overshadow the events or endanger the public.'
