'So senseless': Family of pregnant woman killed by accused drunk driver share their grief
The Brief Kaitlyn Ellison was killed in a crash on US-23 by a driver who was allegedly drunk. Ellison, a single mother of three, was seven months pregnant at the time. Her family is speaking to FOX 2 asking for help and sharing their memories of Kaitlyn. MONROE COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) - A grieving Monroe County family is sharing their story after a pregnant single mother of three was killed, allegedly by a drunk driver. The backstory Kaitlyn Ellison was seven months pregnant was killed Saturday night by a suspected drunk driver on US-23 near Monroe. "I'm going to miss her badly," said Lori Ellison, talking about her daughter. "She was a very sweet, happy, loving mother." Monroe sheriffs arrested 24 year-old Hunter Suto from Ohio, who was arraigned on charges related to Kaitlyn's death Monday afternoon. They say speed and alcohol, were factors in the crash. "So senseless. Drunk driving this country has gotten ridiculous. It's gotten way out of hand," said Vickie Jensen. Kaitlyn's daughter Riley has now lost both her parents. "It's unbelievable that I don't have any more parents. My father passed away when I was, like three," said Riley Denny. Now, without a mother or a father, 13-year-old Riley has to take care of the family. "I promised my mother when I was right next to her saying goodbye," Riley said. "I promised her that I would take care of her babies." Kaitlyn was seven months pregnant by her boyfriend. Their future symbolized with a promise ring. Now Reilly's ring. "It is life. If I lose it, I don't know. I really do miss my mother," she said. Pregnant mom of 3 killed when speeding driver causes her SUV to flip, MI cops say
A family is mourning the death of a mother of three and her unborn daughter after she was killed in a crash on a Michigan highway, deputies said. Kaitlyn Ellison, 32, was driving home from work May 17 when a 24-year-old driving on the highway's shoulder sideswiped the woman's vehicle and ran her off the road, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and a GoFundMe. Ellison's Ford Escape flipped several times and landed in an embankment in Whiteford Township where she was trapped in the vehicle, deputies said. She was extricated from the SUV by fire officials, then taken to the hospital, authorities said in a May 18 news release. The woman who was seven months pregnant was pronounced dead in the hospital, deputies said. Her unborn child also did not survive the crash. The driver accused of fatally hitting Ellison while intoxicated fled the scene and was arrested at a gas station following a search, deputies said. Authorities said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. He is held in jail on two counts of second-degree homicide and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, deputies said. The man was not named by authorities because he has not been arraigned. Deputies said the crash remains under investigation. Whiteford Township is about a 60-mile drive southwest from Detroit.

Pregnant woman killed in Whiteford Township crash
WHITEFORD TOWNSHIP — A pregnant woman was killed in a traffic crash in on US-23 shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, May 17, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Kaitlyn Ellison, 32, of Petersburg, was operating a red Ford Escape northbound on US-23 when she was side-swiped by a 24-year-old man from Oregon, Ohio, who was operating a white Chrysler 300, the sheriff department said in a news release. According to witnesses, the Chrysler was moving at high speed prior to the crash. It merged into the right lane from the shoulder and attempted to pass Ellison on the left north of Consear Road. The Chrysler struck the Escape, causing it to run off the roadway to the right. It rolled several times over an embankment before coming to rest on its right side. Ellison was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Whiteford Township Fire Department. The Chrysler also lost control after impact and came to rest in the left median of the expressway. "Ms. Ellison was transported to Toledo Hospital where she was pronounced deceased," read the sheriff's office's release. "Ms. Ellison was 7 months pregnant. The unborn child was also pronounced deceased." Investigators said the Chrysler's driver fled the scene on foot. Police dog and drone teams from the sheriff's office were brought in to search the area. During the search, deputies located the driver at the Pilot Gas Station on US-223. The driver was arrested and lodged at the Monroe County Jail on two counts of second-degree homicide and two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death. According to witnesses, the Chrysler was speeding and passing vehicles on the right shoulder. The Chrysler merged into the right lane while attempting to pass the Ford Escape, striking it and causing it to run off the roadway. The Ford rolled several times over an embankment before coming to a rest on its right side. The driver, 32-year-old Kaitlyn Ellison of Petersburg, Mich., was trapped and had to be extricated from the car by the Whiteford Township Fire Department. Ellison was transported to Toledo Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Officials say she was 7 months pregnant, and the unborn child was also pronounced deceased. Investigators say the Chrysler also lost control after impact and came to a rest in the left median. The driver fled from the crash on foot. Monroe County Sheriff's Office K9 and Drone teams searched the area and found the driver at the Pilot Gas Station on US-223. The driver, a 24-year-old Ohio man, was arrested and lodged at the Monroe County Jail on two counts of Second Degree Homicide and two counts of OWI Causing Death. His name is being withheld pending arraignment in the Monroe County 1st District Court. He is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Speed and alcohol are factors in the crash, according to the investigators. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Whiteford Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Michigan State Police. The investigation is ongoing. The sheriff's office says the collision caused the Ford to roll several times over an embankment before coming to a rest on its side. Ellison, from Petersburg, Michigan, was extricated by the Whiteford Township Fire Department and transported to a hospital, where she later died. Ellison was seven months pregnant, according to the sheriff's office. Her unborn child also died after the crash.
