Min Hee Jin vs LE SSERAFIM's agency: June hearing gets scheduled for KakaoTalk messages' validity as evidence amid NewJeans row

Source Music filed a 500 million KRW damages lawsuit against former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin. Its second hearing took place on May 30, Friday, during when the agency was set to present some important 'evidence' of the case, that involved text messages. However, Min Hee Jin's side alleged the messages to be illegally obtained. Hence, the court ordered a separate hearing to check its legal validity, as reported by K-media outlet Sports Today. Min Hee Jin's stance in the Source Music case LE SSERAFIM 's label, Source Music, was prepared to present a 20-minute showcase of documents supporting their claims. However, Min Hee Jin 's legal representative raised an objection, arguing that the KakaoTalk messages included in the presentation materials were obtained without proper authorization. Thus, as per the defendant, the texts should not be considered as evidence. ADOR refuted it by claiming that the messages were legally obtained and used in previous trials. Elaborating their concern, Min Hee Jin's team stated, 'What worries us most is that the presentation may contain message excerpts related to the disputed incident.' Additionally, her legal counsel also submitted a formal request for the trial to be held in a closed session, away from public scrutiny. Court decision on Min Hee Jin's request The 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court acknowledged the former ADOR CEO's concerns regarding the legal admissibility of the KakaoTalk messages, however they denied the second request of a closed session. The judge's ruling mentioned, 'We will proceed with a public hearing, but will restrict any discussion or display of the specific KakaoTalk excerpts the defendant contests until further review." Upon hearing both parties' arguments, the court decided to hold a separate hearing on June 27 to assess the legitimacy of the KakaoTalk evidence. About Min Hee Jin vs Source Music case Min Hee Jin claimed in a press conference that HYBE initially planned to debut NewJeans as their first girl group but instead chose to launch LE SSERAFIM first. She also alleged that HYBE later limited NewJeans' promotional activities and favoured LE SSERAFIM. The dispute further involved Min Hee Jin's disagreements over the casting and training process for NewJeans with HYBE

"Mr. Hong Joon-pyo, I'm disappointed. Go ahead and live together with others," reads a Korean-language Facebook post shared on May 29, 2025. The phrase "together with others" is wordplay on the Democratic Party's Korean name "Deobureo Minjudang". The first word means "together with" while the second means "Democratic Party". Hong, a five-term lawmaker, ran for president in 2017 but lost to Democratic Party nominee Moon Jae-in. He made another bid in 2022, but Yoon was chosen instead as the presidential candidate at the People Power Party (PPP) primary. After resigning as mayor of southeastern Daegu city earlier this year for another run for the presidency, he was again defeated and quit the party, departing for Hawaii (archived link). The post features a screenshot from messaging app KakaoTalk that includes an image of Hong apparently wearing a white jacket printed with "Lee Jae-myung now" and "1" -- Lee's candidate number. "A photo showing Hong Joon-pyo in the United States wearing a campaign outfit for candidate Lee Jae-myung," an accompanying message reads. Text overlaid on the image reads: "This beast? A person?! A dog?" South Korea will hold a snap presidential election on June 3 triggered by Yoon's disastrous martial law declaration, with the two-day early voting period beginning five days prior (archived link). All major polls have placed Lee as the clear frontrunner in the race, with conservative ex-labour minister Kim Moon-soo of the PPP trailing far behind (archived here and here). The picture of Hong sporting a pro-Lee slogan circulated across platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, X and Threads. "The face of a human, but the heart of a beast. How can you be like this? Traitor to the conservatives. Quit politics," a misled user wrote in a comment. Another said: "Hong Joon-pyo, why are you so petty and sly. Good luck getting along with Lee Jae-myung." The image, however, is edited; Hong's jacket did not show a political message in the original photo. A reverse image search on Google revealed Hong posted the photo featuring him and his wife on Facebook on May 15 (archived link). He added that the picture was taken at the summit of Mauna Kea on Hawaii's Big Island. While in Hawaii, Hong has remained active on Facebook. At one point, he changed the colour of his tie in his profile picture to blue -- the symbolic colour of the Democratic Party -- before switching it back to the PPP's colour red (archived here and here). This prompted speculation he might switch sides and join the rival camp, but he later rejected such rumours and expressed support for Kim, according to local news reports (archived here and here). AFP has previously debunked misinformation surrounding the upcoming presidential election in South Korea.

280,000 SKT users replace USIM chips through hacking-prompted replacement service

SK Telecom Co. said Tuesday around 280,000 users have received new universal subscriber identity module (USIM) chips through its free replacement program, launched in response to a recent hacking incident. As of 9 a.m., some 4.32 million users had also booked USIM replacements online, according to the company. The service began at 10 a.m. on Monday, with about 2,600 retail stores nationwide also participating in the replacement effort. Some 25 million SK Telecom subscribers, including nearly 2 million budget phone users, are eligible for the replacement service. The move followed a cyberattack detected on April 18, in which SK Telecom discovered signs of a large-scale leak of customers' USIM data. In response, the company pledge d to take swift action and launched the replacement program. Authorities believe the data was leaked from SK Telecom's main server despite the company rejecting the claim. "I don't know why SK Telecom denied that," Choi Jang-hyuk, vice chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, told reporters in a briefing. "I think it would be right to view the leak as coming from the main server." Choi said the watchdog is currently looking into the case with a focus on whether proper security measures were taken for the main server that stored USIM data. He declined to elaborate on the leak, noting the probe is at an early stage. He also said SK Telecom will likely face a fine on a "different level," compared to the 6.8 billion won ($4.7 million) levied against another telecom carrier, LG Uplus Corp., in 2023 over a data leak of around 300,000 users. "LG Uplus was before the revision to the Personal Information Protection Act, the fine (for SK Telecom) is likely to be far higher than that," Choi said. With the legal revision, companies can be fined up to 3 percent of their total sales, although sales from areas unrelated to the law violation can be excluded from the calculation. SK Telecom has also asked its subscribers to register for its USIM Protection Service, which it said offers the same level of defense against illegal financial activity as replacing the USIM card itself. About 8.72 million people have signed up for the protection service so far, it added. Combined with replacements and reservations, the total number of users who have taken protective steps stood at 13.31 million, the company said. SK Telecom emphasized that no financial incidents, such as unauthorized transfers, have been reported using the stolen data so far. However, cybersecurity experts caution that hackers could still exploit the stolen USIM information for phishing attacks via text messages, KakaoTalk or email. The Korea Internet & Security Agency has asked the public not to click on smishing messages, or SMS phishing messages, but to report such activity to the agency. (Yonhap)
