Kader Mohideen presented with ‘Thagaisal Thamizhar' Award; ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan receives Abdul Kalam Award
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader K.M. Kader Mohideen received the 'Thagaisal Thamizhar Award' from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during the Independence Day celebrations held in Chennai on Friday (August 15, 2025). While ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan received the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award from the Chief Minister, paralympic athlete and Arjuna Award recipient Thulasimathi Murugesan from Kancheepuram district was presented with the Kalpana Chawla Award for Courage and Daring Enterprise for 2025. Rural development initiatives through community participation, the simplification of house building plan approvals, the implementation of welfare programmes by the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, the construction of a glass bridge in Kanniyakumari by the Highways and Minor Ports Department, and the promotion of the Tamil language by the Tamil Virtual Academy were presented with the Best Practices Award. For exemplary service towards the welfare of persons with disabilities, Dr. Kumaravel Shanmuga Sundaraman, Tiruchi, received the best doctor award; M/s ECOMWEL, Salem district, was chosen as the best institution; Gunasekaran Jegadeesan from Coimbatore district, the best social worker; M/s Bell Printers Private Limited, the best private employer; and Kanchipuram District Central Co-operative Bank, the best district central cooperative bank. IAS officer Aftab Rasool was named for receiving a certificate of appreciation for exemplary field-level leadership in evacuating students from Tamil Nadu studying in Jammu and Kashmir in the post-Operation Sindoor scenario. Bhageerathy Ramamoorthy from Chennai district and K. Marimuthu from Virudhunagar district won the best social worker award under the category of services rendered towards the welfare of women. Karunalaya Social Service Society, Chennai, and Society for Education Village Action and Improvement, Tiruchi, received the best institution award for serving women. As for Chief Minister's Award for best performing local bodies, Zones 6 and 13 won the top two positions among the zones within the Greater Chennai Corporation. Avadi and Namakkal secured the first two positions under the municipal corporation category. Among municipalities, Rajapalayam, Rameswaram, and Perambalur received the first, second, and third prizes respectively. Uthiramerur in Kancheepuram district, Kattupudhur in Tiruchi district, and Natham in Dindigul district secured the top three spots among town panchayats. S. Chandru Kumar, M. Jayakumar, T. Mariyappan, M. Khazima, A. Lavanya, and G. Gowri received the Chief Minister's State Youth Award. Late 'Kalaivalarmani' P. Rajkumar was presented with the Chief Minister's Special Award posthumously.

Legal action only solution to retrieve states' powers, says TN CM Stalin in his I-day address
CHENNAI: While states need additional powers, their powers in matters such as education are usurped, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin alleged on Friday and batted for legal action to achieve this. In his Independence Day address here, Stalin said that a state government always struggling to get its rightful funds from the Centre does not augur well for federalism. To retrieve states' role and powers, legal action is the only solution, he said, adding the time has arrived to take preliminary steps to take forward such steps to retrieve states' powers. The CM said people belonging to all states, religions, languages and cultures fought and won freedom and that was why the founding fathers of the nation wished India to be a country for all sections of people for all times to come. Fulfilling the wishes of the nation's founding fathers is true tribute to them. The CM conferred the Thagaisal Thamizhar (Distinguished Tamilian) Award on Indian Union Muslim League leader KM Khader Mohideen at the I-Day event. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan was presented with the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award.
