Tight security arrangements in place for Kanwar Yatra
Meerut: Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place across the Meerut Range of Uttar Pradesh—including the districts of Meerut, Bulandshahr, Baghpat and Hapur—for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra, to ensure a peaceful and safe pilgrimage during the holy month of Shravan, officials said here on Monday. A total of 119 security barriers will be installed along the 540-kilometre-long Kanwar route in the region. This includes 25 each in Meerut and Bulandshahr, 51 in Baghpat and 18 in Hapur. The route has been divided into 57 zones and 155 sectors for better monitoring and management, they said. To aid 'kanwariyas' (pilgrims), 184 rest points and 838 temporary camps are being set up—464 in Meerut, 176 in Bulandshahr, 90 in Baghpat and 108 in Hapur, they added. Special vigilance will be maintained in 184 mixed-population areas that fall along the pilgrimage route. Given the expected footfall at major temples such as Pura Mahadev (Baghpat), Augharnath temple (Meerut), Brijghat (Hapur), Ambakeshwar Mahadev (Bulandshahr) and Sabli temple (Hapur), dedicated arrangements have been made to manage crowd flow and ensure safety, officials said. Authorities have also planned alternate routes for heavy and light vehicles to regulate traffic during the yatra period. With contingencies in mind, disaster response teams from the SDRF and NDRF, along with local divers, have been kept on alert. Control rooms at the range and district levels have been set up for real-time monitoring using CCTV cameras and drones. Meerut Range DIG Kalanidhi Naithani said that a social media monitoring cell has been activated to track and respond swiftly to any misleading or inflammatory posts. He also directed the deployment of women police personnel for the safety of female pilgrims and instructed the establishment of Lost and Found centres at key locations. The Kanwar Yatra is set to begin on July 11, marking the start of the Shravan month. During the yatra, devotees collect holy water from the Ganga at sites such as Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri and Sultanganj, and offer it at local Shiva temples through the ritual of 'Jalabhishek'—a tradition rooted in Hindu mythology, including references to the 'Samudra Manthan'.

May 06, 2025 07:43 PM IST Amrita Yadav, a woman sub-inspector posted at Kotwali Police Station and in-charge of the Budhana Gate police outpost in 2017, has been dismissed from service after being convicted in a bribery case. Deputy inspector general (DIG) of police (Meerut Range) Kalanidhi Naithani ordered her dismissal on May 4, invoking Rule 8(2)(a) of the Uttar Pradesh Police Officers (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1991, after approval from police headquarters and the state government. The Special Judge for Prevention of Corruption Act/Additional Sessions Judge pronounced the verdict on September 5, 2024. (Sourced) A special court sentenced her to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a ₹ 75,000 fine in September 2024 for accepting a ₹ 20,000 bribe to remove rape charges from a dowry harassment complaint. 'The conduct of woman sub-inspector Amrita Yadav has severely tarnished the image of the police department. Such shameful acts cannot be tolerated in a disciplined force,' Kalanidhi Naithani stated. The bribe was taken from Sameer, a resident of Sikri Modinagar, at the Budhana Gate outpost on June 13, 2017. Acting on his complaint, the anti-corruption team laid a trap and caught Yadav red-handed while accepting the cash. A formal case was registered against her at Kotwali Police Station, and she was taken into custody. The Special Judge for Prevention of Corruption Act/Additional Sessions Judge pronounced the verdict on September 5, 2024. Since then, Yadav has remained lodged in Meerut District Jail.

SI, who was caught taking bribe in 2017, terminated from service
Meerut: A sub-inspector (SI) of UP police, who had been caught accepting a bribe in 2017, was terminated from service on Sunday, following orders from deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Meerut zone, Kalanidhi Naithani, police said on Monday. Police said that Amrita Yadav, originally from Saharanpur, was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by the Meerut anti-corruption court in Sept 2024, and is currently lodged in the Baghpat district jail. Yadav was terminated under Section 8(2)(a) of the Uttar Pradesh Police Subordinate Officers (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1991. "The disgraceful act committed by her while serving in a disciplined force not only tarnished the image of the police department but also reflects serious misconduct, indiscipline, and unethical behaviour. Such actions harm public trust and morale within the force. Retaining such an officer is unjustified. She is not entitled to any sympathy or leniency," DIG Naithani said. He added that any police personnel found guilty of serious misconduct or convicted by a court will be dismissed from service, in addition to facing judicial punishment. All district police chiefs have also been directed to expedite pending corruption cases and ensure swift punitive action. In June 2017, Yadav, then posted at the Budhana Gate outpost of Kotwali police station in Meerut, demanded Rs 1 lakh from an accused, Mohd Sameer, a resident of Ghaziabad, to dilute charges in a dowry harassment and rape case. She accepted Rs 20,000 and was caught red-handed by the anti-corruption department officials. Following an investigation, she was prosecuted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and in Sept 2024, a special court found her guilty, sentencing her to seven years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 75,000.
