Murmu presents Kalinga Ratna Award to Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan
BHUBANESWAR : President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Adikabi Sarala Das, a 15th century poet and scholar of Odia literature on his 600th birth anniversary, and presented the Kalinga Ratna Award-2024 to Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Addressing the birth anniversary celebrations of Das, organised by the Sarala Sahitya Sansad at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, Murmu said Adikabi enriched Indian literature by composing the Mahabharata. Stating that the Indian epics have been written in many languages, Murmu said, 'Our diversity is like a rainbow. Our unity has been very strong for ages. We have many languages but the sentiment is one. The world remains amazed at how India remains united and integrated amidst so many languages and so many religions.'

"President Droupadi Murmu to attend 5th convocation of AIIMS Bhubaneswar today," says AIIMS Executive Director
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], July 14 (ANI): AIIMS Bhubaneswar is set to hold its 5th convocation on Monday, said AIIMS Executive Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas, and the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, will be attending the ceremony. Speaking to the reporters, Ashutosh Biswas said, 'Today is the 5th convocation of AIIMS, and the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and the President of AIIMS Bhubaneswar will come. Around 643 students will be given a degree, and around 32 students will be awarded a gold medal... We are thrilled to welcome the President of India... Along with this, the governor, CM, education minister, and local MP of Odisha will also be present here...' President Droupadi Murmu will visit Odisha's Bhubaneswar and Cuttack from July 14 to 15, 2025, a press release from the President's Secretariat said. The President, on Monday, will grace the fifth convocation ceremony of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar. The next day, the President will grace the 13th annual convocation of Ravenshaw University and lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of three buildings of Ravenshaw Girls' High School at Cuttack. She will also grace the birth anniversary celebration of Adikabi Sarala Das and present the Kalinga Ratna Award-2024 at Cuttack. Earlier on Sunday, former Foreign Secretary Harshvardhan Shringla, Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, veteran social worker C Sadanandan Master, and noted historian Meenakshi Jain were among the other people who were nominated by President Murmu for Rajya Sabha. Ujjwal Nikam is best known for handling high-profile criminal cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks trial of Ajmal Kasab and the 1993 Bombay blasts case. Shringla, known for his distinguished diplomatic career, was India's Ambassador to the United States and Bangladesh. He served as Foreign Secretary from January 2020 to April 2022. Other newly nominated members include C Sadanandan Master, a veteran social worker and educationist from Kerala with decades of grassroots service, and Meenakshi Jain, a noted historian and academic recognised for her contributions to the study of Indian history and civilisation. Ahead of President Droupadi Murmu's two-day visit to Odisha, the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate Police issued a traffic advisory for July 14 and 15. Commuters must take note of the traffic restrictions and diversions, and plan their journey accordingly. Traffic movement will be diverted for goods carriers heading to Cuttack from Khurdha through Bhubaneswar. These vehicles will be rerouted at Pitapalli Square towards Cuttack via Chandaka Square. Heavy vehicles coming from Cuttack will be rerouted at Balikuda Square towards Pitapalli Sqr via Chandaka Square. On July 15, goods carriers will not be allowed to run on NH-16 between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Except for emergency vehicles like fire, ambulance and police, these traffic restrictions will be applicable on all vehicles. The President is scheduled to attend the fifth convocation ceremony of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswaron Monday. On the following day, the President Murmu will participate in the 13th annual convocation of Ravenshaw University. As per the itinerary, she will also lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of three buildings of Ravenshaw Girls' High School at Cuttack. Besides this, she will present the Kalinga Ratna Award-2024 at Cuttack and take part in the birth anniversary celebration of Adikabi Sarala Das.

Today in Politics: SC to hear plea seeking diplomatic intervention to save Indian nurse on death row in Yemen
The Supreme Court on Monday will hear a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to use diplomatic channels to save an Indian nurse, who is likely to be executed in Yemen on July 16 for murdering her Yemeni business partner. A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta is likely to hear the matter. The matter was mentioned for urgent hearing on July 10 after advocate Subhash Chandran K R said diplomatic channels need to be explored at the earliest. He had submitted that payment of blood money to the family of the deceased permissible under Sharia law can be explored. Nimisha Priya, 38, a nurse from Palakkad district of Kerala, was convicted for murdering her Yemeni business partner in 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen. SC may hear plea on probe agencies summoning lawyers The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a suo motu case over the issue of investigation agencies summoning lawyers who offer opinions to parties and represent them in cases. A Bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria will hear the matter. The case comes in the wake of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoning senior lawyers Arvind Datar and Pratap Venugopal. However, on June 20, the ED directed its investigating officers not to issue summons to any advocate in money laundering investigations being carried out against their clients, adding that an exception to this rule can only be made after 'approval' by the agency's director. The plea has also sought directions to the authorities concerned to strictly enforce provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, and the Flag Code of India, 2002, to ensure that the national flag was treated with utmost respect. The petition would come up for hearing before a Bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria. Tripura Congress protest against BJP's 'anti-people policies' Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) will stage demonstrations in all the district headquarters on Monday against 'anti-people policies' of the BJP-led government in the state, a senior party leader said. Accusing the government of failing to address people's problems, TPCC president Asish Kumar Saha said the state electricity company has hiked power tariff by installing smart meters. 'We want the government-controlled Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) to abandon the plan to roll out smart meters across the state. The consumers are aggrieved by the move,' he told reporters in South Tripura's Belonia on Saturday. New Puducherry minister to take oath The swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed Puducherry Minister A John Kumar and three nominated MLAs is set to take place on Monday.
